what age would you teach a dog to jump
huntingalltheway replied to Buddykangoo's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i take mine for small walks in the fields at 8 weeks and find a fence climb over and leave the pup the other side. with in a few seconds they come through the squares. i find gates are good at a young age as again they learn that they dont always have to go over if theres a gap to go through. ive never helped any dog over a fence. it just comes natural to them to find a way through or over from doing it from young. my pups been jumping for ages and hes just turned 7 months. never picked him over anything if he cant jump it he climbs it. he still sometimes does it now on some of the silly high -
alright lads i have a nine week old lurcher pup for sale hes a alsation x lurcher but thrown to the lurcher the only alsation he seems to have physically is a stronger head like the bull and better feet with a slightly wool coat. appart from that hes a nice light frame. coming to sell as i was told on purchase he was a first x alsation/grey but found out from people who knew the breeder he wasnt. i now have purchased my first x. so i cant keep the other. be good for someone who like the alsation x but not there weight. pm me for more details i paid 120 for him but open to any offer. must go to

Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???
huntingalltheway replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
but what happens when these lighter even more fragile dogs take a bad fall or hit a fence do they jump back up and carry on hunting or are you taking them to the vets with a broken leg. i would be scared shitless in putting years of work into a dog for it to fall and it be game over. i would probly own one to mess about with but always have me sterdy lurcher for serious work. my bull/whip/grey x bed/whip at 20 months hit a bailer flat out and put all his back out had i choose to retire him even tho they said he probly could run in time. now think if that was one of them whip/greys dead dog. wo -

i think flint08s mal x topic shows how agile the heaver breeds can be there 100lb in weight and jumping a large 8 bar gate with feet to spare like they were not even trying. its shocking to imagin just how well they can turn as well no different to most lurchers on the market -
agree totally I only had to read one page to see if anyone had put something similar to me and i belive this bloke hit the nail on the head! i think he,s missed the nail by a mile, nothing can give an 100% all the time its imposible. even the fittest human in the world could not run many 200 mitres flat out, they would be slowining at the end of the first run,if they had a couple minutes and tried a gain they would be slower still and struggle .theres also mental side of it Correct me if i am wrong but is prey drive not ALL the mental side of it? A dog is giving 100% if it

i am used to the way people are in the running dog world i know to take it with a pinch of salt!! its more those who are thinking of getting invovlved or who are new to the sport i feel sorry for!!! they look in at us lot and see breeds wich may infact suit them slated and steer clear of them only to realise later on after frustrating nights they have been running an unsuitable dog!! and that the cross they first saw as a no go due to the slagging off they got when they first looked into it was in fact the one for them!! i was one of these when i was a kid!! i was told too keep away from coll

dont think thats a great example really. your talking like 16 rabbits a fox and a big un is impressive might be to me or you but to a serious hunter it could be acheived in an hour. which ive seen now to me if a dog fully fit and fully experienced can only catch that its poor. now i'd admit my dog was naf compared to most but even mine could catch 15-20 rabbits before 20 months old. and like i said mine wasnt very impressive. any dog can run to catch the odd 10-20 but only the dogs that use there brains and slow down can acheive more. unfortunatly my last couldnt he just wanted to go 100% all

I don't think this is typical of the breed...in fact I think the opposite is typical. Mals are definitely one of the most athletic breeds: Ring Sport Mal mate totally agree if you search about a month back i put a very lengthy post on some one asking how good malinios were as a breed they are way above the gsd but the prob put me off. Read my post i put then your'l understand just how much i know about the breed. My mate owns two. Great dogs to. He was the one that breed them -
How do you bring your dogs up to peak fitness?
huntingalltheway replied to stroller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
as soon as hes injected take him out in the field and walk he'l stay as close by you as he can. keep doing this when hes really young and they learn to stay close. they do it naturally with repetition. but if you leave them till there older than you will need an extender lead because the older they get the more curious they are hence do it when there scared of everything and they want to be glued to you. -
go to page three or four on the forum theres been a massive discussion on them. atb

How do you bring your dogs up to peak fitness?
huntingalltheway replied to stroller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
not really you cant do it with all breeds your giving the correct training for your breed of dog. i only took this method on a few years ago after watching some very incredible dogs work and asked him what made them this successful and he said the above what i told you. now hes got 30 odd years in bring dogs up this way so its tried and tested. i my self have lamped with hundreds of other people and no ones dogs yet have come close to the bar he set, dont get me wrong seen some good dogs and some great but still his are way above so hence why i use the above method and i gotta tell you it does -

sorry for the spelling but i had one of the malinious x greyhound. there as game as hell and would say there the better x but i had massive problems with fence training tried everything but all he would do was howl like hell. dont get me wrong he was marking berries at 13 weeks real switched on but was a complete let down on fences so i sent him back to the breeder as promised if i would ever rehome him as his pick of litter died. which was a shame but no chance in hell was i picking him over every fence and gate. no chance. so ive gone back to the trusted alsatian/grey. -
How do you bring your dogs up to peak fitness?
huntingalltheway replied to stroller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
started my lurcher with basic walking to heal in the fields at 8 weeks just for a few minutes. im now at the point of 7 months and i havnt got the legs to walk him as much as he could probly go for so 4-5 hours a day i aim for more but this has been a very gradual process. i feed him chicken with a pacted dry food. dry food is down all day so its there when he needs it and he has a chicken carcass every morning. i dont do any as such obedience training as i see a dog at his best as natural as he can be as long hes walking to heel thats fine. im a true believer in almost rearing them like a wol -

depends on the lines my bitch is what you call an original straight back so is unlikely to suffer. Over many years people have bred into the dogs a bigger arch, this was seen as more desirable in show, with it brought hip problems. the bitch to my pup was the same kind of type she was a security dog which was highly trained. and he said he never goes with any of the ones with the arch he tries to get them with the straight back like they are still bred in germany. if you have a german shepherd from this country and its got alot of red in the pedigree thats a bad sign because as you said th -

-
yeah i hope so. its down to me now. hes got all the right stuff so if he fails in any way its down to me
-
yeah def, hes sired some good dogs. but if he was the dad i would of had to pay a grand for the pup so this way probly suits me better. i cant remember which one it was. ive owned myself so many of the honcho offspring.
-
yeah i was told it was him not sure. the dog in the picture is the dog who sired him. the greyhound was def honcho lines i swear it was tiger honcho its one of the honchos. i know of someone else as well that ownes a honcho ones hes same colour as the sire but its useless so ive been told and they come from cullmington by ludlow. might of got them muddled up im seeing the bloke tomorrow so i'l get it sorted and edit so its the right honcho. cheers for bringing it to my attention

whats a good % of protein
huntingalltheway replied to smiffyuk2003's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
dont despute any of that if you read the whole post you'l see i see fat and protein should be balanced as well as all the other amino acids vitimins and minerals they need. plus if you read my other comments on dog food i mention that the fats are needed. just got in a debate on which way round the stores get burnt and the ways they pass through the body. dont know it all but my biology A level helps i use a 28% protein 15% oils/fats plus meat -
just because a dog wont run at rabbits next to the hedge dont mean they have no prey drive it just means there brainy, why fight a endless battle.we all know that some of them come back in to the field but more of them get through.my dog does it and at times you think stop pissing about and run that beam but it aint that bad because she picks squaters out of the seat just walks to them a dog that runs the beam flat out will be tired quicker than the one that walks so i can live with missing the odd one on the edge just my oppinion exactly, especialy at the end of the season non come ba

whats a good % of protein
huntingalltheway replied to smiffyuk2003's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
you need both protein is one of the first to burn fat only gets burnt once all the other stores have been used. but most good foods should be 25-28% protein and 12-18% oil. but your right oil is just as important as once all the protein stores are gone it feeds on the fats rather than your dogs body mass. but if you dont run your dog enough on these high protein and fat diets you'l have one fat dog so no good for off season dogs ive got 24% protein pascoes gold. but a dog like a human uses fat first then protein as a last resort its called hitting the wall because it takes longer to break -
both gonna see how he goes spit of the mum for def the mum
