  1. Cheers, good to be back. It had been a bit difficult since last September when tragedy struck. This all started with a knock on the door from a copper late one night asking me whether I knew where my shooting buddy was (the one with the HW100 and we did that pigeon decoying with the fishing brolly stuff). Apparently he had left a note which included among other things about leaving his airguns to me and my son. Well unfortunately late the next day it was found that he had taken his own life in an old barn on one of his permissions. This was a very hard time as we used to fish everywhere and ha
  2. With the ferreting season now at an end with a final successful outing last Sunday it was time to keep on top of them with the S410 over the coming months. The last five months had not seen much action with the rifle due to commitments with ferreting, beating and fishing taking priority apart from a half a dozen trips out lamping over the winter. So this evening was really to get my eye back in and see where the rabbit numbers were rising. Decided to try part of a field where we had seen a few out last Sunday whilst ferreting. Got there at 6:30pm only to find the farmer was going round the edg
  3. Cheers Joe, yes they were great to watch and Max had another great catch soon after where he plucked it cleanly up into the air at full pace, unfortunately we didn't get that one on film. Earlier in the day he took off at some rabbits on the far side of the field that were out chasing one another. He got right over there and turned one but just missed it but it was a fantastic run across a full field. I also lost my glove when I tried to retrieve a rabbit backed up in a hole and the ferret didn't take kindly to me getting in there and whipped my glove off my hand and took it deep into the
  4. Well here are a few selected pictures from the end of the coarse season on our little river and the start of the wild brown trout season on the 1st April this year: Managed to get my lad out a few times after the pike so he could get one bigger than his 3lb jack from last year. In two sessions he had two doubles the best at 16lb. On one of those days we landed over 80lb of pike on deadbaits and lures: Had some good evening and night sessions after the chub in tiny little swims where you could barely swing a rod. Mainly fishing breadflake with liquidised brea
  5. Decided on one last trip out today so myself, my lad, Rik and his spaniel and Luke and his two lurchers set off for a day in the sun. The season so far had shown mixed fortunes as some areas had been hit hard by mixy at the end of last year. Popped over to a new bit of permission to check it out which consisted of several large orchards. The cover was quite thick so we left this till next season but will shoot it through the summer and there were plenty of woodies around. So went to another permission that we hadn't visited this season and set up with the longnets as the nettles were too t
  6. Cheers for the write-up was a good day out. Worked well with the longets on those thick hedges. Should be okay for a lamp out late on Friday night, I'll keep an eye on the weather and we should be get a few. Bit flooded round here at the moment but the worst has now passed, may work to our favour and put a few more above ground for the night out. Chris.
  7. Great write-up Newkid. That is definitely the life. I took out our Ocean Caper a few times this year from Lyme and Seatown so maybe one day we'll bump into each other on the waves. Keep up the great write-ups. Guess you'll be getting ready for the ferreting season soon? we're going to start in October when its hopefully cooled down a bit. Chris.
  8. Nice fishing for chub, especially when roving. Had some good sessions this year mainly with slugs and freelined crust. For a really big one it may work to try something a bit different. For example Peter Stone had some huge chub fishing ledgered sardines at night close in (Big Fish from Famous Waters). That's as long as you haven't got pesky signal crayfish like we have.
  9. Great shooting. It's always interesting how it takes the rabbits a while to realise their everyday cover has disappeared.
  10. Nice mixture of species and the pike show some great markings. Bet its a nice quiet spot up there.
  11. Yes, just freelined. This means I don't have to worry about losing end gear and can often bounce / skate the slug across the surface under some overhanging bush. The chub are well tuned to the plop of a slug off the vegetation, it must sound like a dinner bell to them. Would recommend taking a latex glove to handle the slugs, I forgot today and ended up having to use a scouring pad to get all the dried slime off my hands when I got back.
  12. Good luck with the barbel. Unfortunately we don't have them down here but have fished for them in the past when I've up to the Wye. Just nick the hook in near the tail end. I use a size 6 or 8 hook tied to three foot of 4lb flurocarbon attached to my main line of 6 lb which has been sprayed with line floatant so that you can see the line on the surface. Usually within a minute of casting as long as you've approached the swim stealthily the line will zip across the surface.
  13. Popped down the road this morning for a couple of hours slugging for chub. Dense undergrowth, stingers, steep banks and very rarely fished. In places I could jump across the river it was more like a stream. Caught a total of a dozen chub the best five were from 2.5 lb up to the biggest at 3.5 lb. Needed to wear thigh waders to walk through all the high wet undergrowth. Travelling light with black gold: Tight little swims: The main catch: The nice long one at 3.5 lb: Chris
  14. Great fun travelling light and trying all the fishy looking spots, who ever said fishing had to be sat down in one place all the time.
  15. Bit short of time at the moment so just managed to grab a couple of hours with the pin on Sunday morning. Put the chest waders on and entered the tiny (2m wide) stream out of the mill. Just a single hook and used floating crust and sinking flake trotted down the stream between the beds of streamer weed. Caught half a dozen chub and a small trout. The better chub were around 2 lb each but I did have one the best side of 3 lb but I messed up taking a picture whilst holding the fish and trying to stop the net and rod floating away. So not a spectacular catch but very enjoyable to be in the wa

    Nice shooting and nice pics.
  17. Nice right up with some nice technical bits. In my little copse that I shoot the ash trees have now fully leaved so getting sight of the pigeons can be very frustrating, I find it really gets the heart pumping when you know something like a pigeon has landed and you're carefully trying to scan the branches before it spots you.
  18. Great shooting and a nice mixed bag for some challenging quarry. Well done.
  19. Too many hobbies and not enough time due to work getting in the way. Hobbies include: Lots of cycling (mountain-bike to work nearly every day, road bike (Airborne Zepplin) when I can, did Lands End to John O'Groats in ten days a few years ago) Kayaking which includes a fun/surf kayak and a proper sea-fishing kayak Started spear-fishing off the Dorset coast, just love snorkelling in the seas in the UK Loads of river fishing (coarse and wild brown trout) mostly roving for big chub and roach Ferreting in the colder months together with beating on a local shoot Car m
