it's a pity more shooters don't buck the tread and take on the older breeds, then they wouldn't be on the endangered list. a good curly coat for instance will make most labs look fat and useless. the older breeds may take a bit longer to come good, but the actual job they do is not hard working flatcoats, curlies and spaniels like clumbers are part of your sporting heritage it will be a shame to see them disappear

yes.............the difference is the drahthaar is still heavily controlled in its breeding. the gwp is not the same as alot of american gwp's.............confused

Without question mustwork although im slightly biased i see these dogs work most days theyre a credit to the breed and word amongst the dog world is 110% positive to this affix!!!! that with the help and advice les and lisa give you wont go wrong!!! I agree with you there Gary but lets not dismiss the fabulous Wiggmansburg line. Im biased obviously but they are superb, driven and good lookers too. Far to many wooly coated flat footed specimins about and its good these 2 kennels care about the look too as do the germans depends on what you mean by eurpean, the german bred stuff

for me.... yes. i wouldn't own a gsp, simply because i don't regard the english and australia/nz gsp's as being the same as the german version... the trials people have turned the breed into a large running bird dog, not suited to my intended needs. alot will depend on the different types of hunting you intend doing.

the vizsla has a more birdy working manner and a more positive point, a well bred vizsla is perhaps a better bird dog, with alot more style than a gwp the gwp is strong on water work, retrieving and game that bites back there is a huge difference between the gsp and a gwp in working manner, the viszla is closer to the gwp in working than a gsp in my experience.

Depends on the breeding, they dont like being told off for a start they respond to praise a great deal and most of their training should revolve around praise not disapline. as a whole they are not fussed at all about being told off, the best training advise i can give is 'don't' just teach them to become easy to live with then let them come on slowly, they are not labs or springers and when it comes time to put the firm training into them they easily learn them with a firm hand and firm instructions. stay away from english field champ lines and the solid show lines, the breed is not

i think it would be a hard job introducing another european breed into the uk, when you guys have already developed your own working dogs to handle uk conditions, the springer, cocker and lab have seen the demise of even the old breeds like curly coats and the forementioned clumbers, history shows us for some german breeds they just don't have a place in the uk hunting scene, despite being popular in there home country, alot have had to be detuned before they even become useful.

well done maggi glad ya getting the enjoyment from her mate, they are awesome dogs currently waiting for my new litter at the moment and my new pup

you have time on your side, put the work and training into him and get an honest opinion of him from other spaniel people see how he is after a few seasons then if he is doing the job well find a bitch of similar strenghts and the right paperwork to try and improve any weakness that may show up. steadiness is trained in not bred in............the right biddable temp that allows steadyness training to be easy is what you are after....... i believe paperwork is important, it's not a blank cheque to charge more.

found a few clips of how we got on top of our deer problem, nice to see the benelli in action not sure on the soundtrack on one of them but enough to get the juices flowing. we have alot of guys doing this work all over the world.

nice to see you guys get books to show how bad the deer numbers were in nz, those old kiwi cullers knew how to shoot deer. you guys might be interested to know the most red deer shot in this countries history,is not with a 303 but actually a .223 out of a chopper and in recent years the 12g benelli has been the weapon used. -
we have been freeze branding in nz for over twenty years, does help with pigdog id and lost dogs can at least be traced to a certain pighunting club as most have there own brand, mine used to carry a pinetree symbol and my membership number. dogs have to be knocked out to have it done and we usally have a day set aside and to keep the cost down. microchips and tattoo's are still good.

get a mustwork gwp, the vizsla would add nothing to the gwp in a cross. my dogs get to work alot of pheasant and my young male has a very soft mouth. added my favorite two pic's from this season, something wasn't quite right in the second pic

i would agree with gary, les and lisa are a wealth of knowledge and a good contact. i hunt mine on everything, no worries changing to different hunting conditions on the day drover. glad to hear your girls doing well macberran, and great you are giving her room to develop by herself

yes i have had one for two years now, best semi around.

don't feed my dogs at all before a days work do you have your dinner for breakfast.

the ferret, stoat and weasel are all wild as you say bought here to control the rabbit. stoats are more common than ferrets but ferrets are common up in the tussock country, they don't look much like a tame ferret and are pretty fast. season starts in may ends in august. with a few extra seasons on swan, geese and shelduck.

ducks finished a few months back and the pheasants have finished today time to chase the deer and get a pig or two now before summer fishing arrives a few pic's from the last few weeks, mainly dogs but thats what it's all about i reckon. deer oh deer, your next

munsterlanders are pretty cool dogs, sort of like a german version of an english setter, but able to work large game as well, there are some excellent bloodlines in the uk. of the work you mention i take it you want a capable retrieving breed, ducks, pigeon and deer, tracking with an obediant and trainable nature, the german wirehair is the breed to look at, it has a more stable nature and a love of water and retrieving similar to a lab and the inbuilt desire to hunt deer, it's nature is alot less hyper than alot of hpr breeds. springers and labs can do the job but not as natural as the gwp, f

good on ya for getting back into it mate hot bath some nurofen/paracetamal a good nites sleep and a good jog/walk in the morning try to keep up the exercise between training, has the coach told ya to wear plastic rubbish bags under ya gear yet.................f**k ya sweat it out then

yes i have an older featherweight in 3006, so long as i do my part you point it at things pull the trigger and things fall down. never had any problems with it and shoots awesome.

had one of our test weekends to grade pups and intermediate dogs, the weather was shithouse but plenty of pheasants for the dogs to work, the deer hide track was swapped to a pine block so all dogs had a run while we stayed kinda dry. lucky the sunday was better weatherwise for the pups......some european imported blood is starting to show through on a few breeds which was great to see. working trials bred irish setter along for a look....very nice to watch work. gsp water test...puppy gwp blind retrieve..intermediate laying a bird drag and dog completing the test..

RIFLE CALIBRE HAVE I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE?
kiwi replied to gamegunner's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
308's are great for med-large deer....... of all the calibres used down here the 270 would have to be the most hated or the most loved, alot of guys buy them on rep and sell them not long after trying a mates 243 or 7m08, the gunshops are fill with 270's for some strange reason......i use a 3006 myself and find it does the job with out fuss, i'd be happy using a 308 myself for reds. for your little roe a 308 is total over kill, even handloaded 110grs will put a large hole in them. my choice would be a 2506, mild to shoot and very accurate, all the good bullet weights of the 243 and the 20% i
