  1. i was always keen to get a springer, attended a few spaniel trials and was pretty impressed with the little cockers, i now have 4, use them for beating and picking up, they are happy to run with my bigger dogs chasing birds and never run out of gas,in the process of importing another this year, great dogs.
  2. 1, remove all his bedding, it's summer over there i think, replace it with good quality straw when it gets cold. 2, he's a pup and will grow out of it in time, a change of diet will do him no harm, feed a bit more fish with plenty of oil...sardines instead of the eggs. WORM HIM REGULARY !!! 3,all dogs have a chew on the odd bit of grass, once again worm him regulary.
  3. don't cross the lines mate, show cockers have nothing to offer the working lines.
  4. hi steve, a working springer or cocker will do as you ask, i'm now running uk working cockers as well as my beloved gwp's, wrangham kennels have some pretty good ballyblack springer lines from nz,ex cortman lane lines from the uk. we have exported a number of working cockers to aussie, the numbers are not that great in oz, they have an almost terrier nature and will push out anything held up in blackberry, we don't have foxes but mine regulary encounter cats who don't last long once they are bailed and the gwps go storming in as well... i plan on taking mine for a pighunt at some stage, just
  5. put the cat amongst the pigeons with this topic kiwi you got a f.....g problem with me IE who you calling stupid. i was refering to the whole concept as being stupid, stupid is a twit in scotland trying to pick a fight with someone on the other side of the world with a key board......think about it aye before you go off half cocked
  6. i now have a kennel full of gwp's, as well as some pretty well bred cockers, both in there own right do the job no problem at all. i can honestly say why would you need to cross them, the whole concept is just plain stupid. you can also get the same benefits of cross breeding by using totally unrelated bloodlines of the same breed and the results don't have a big question mark over them.. food for thought
  7. why go all the expence of importing a dog to just cross it for a pack of 'might works' while your simple examples seem great in theory poacher you fail to take into account the selective breeding that went on after setter and spaniel blood was mixed and the results wouldn't have come through until after the cross put back over a parent breed. crossing a flusher with a pointing breed will not enhance the pointing instinct, it would take a few generations to correct that back to the level you started with. the munsterlander like the langhaar is a product of many years of controlled breeding i
  8. it will/should happen naturally, the best way to encouage it is to give the dog the birds to do it, dogging in at a shoot for instance or planted pigeons in a trap or dizzied, alot also depends on the training so far, if your dogs has been allowed limited free hunting then that may the problem.
  9. hell no, the key word here is 'gun' a bullet will leave any lurcher for dead.
  10. is crossing the working cocker with show lines commom ? i'm looking at importing a cocker at some stage but really want a pure working strain.
  11. kia kaha richc. she done her job like a true gundog should, and made herself a lifelong mate in the process. rip zelda.
  12. lisa and les from mustwork kennels are the people you need to speak too. they will be able to advise of any suitable litters around
  13. they are great roughshooters dogs, if you can find the right lines they are very sensible and mature early, there is alot of crap about them being hard to train and late to mature, they aren't, gwps can do anything a lab can and last all day like a spaniel, they do have a terrier like temp but it is a plus if you like a dog that don't mind rolling up it's sleaves to sort shit out. find a breeder with as much german blood as possible and stay clear of trials bred hairy 'gsp's' or show line rubbish.
  14. what sort of work is on offer for your intended gwp ?
  15. why not just get a well bred gwp/dd, why bother with a cross bred which could for the most part be a lottery, contary to popular belief a gwp does not need calming down, ya just need to find good deer lines, stay clear of the trials bred shit as they have been bred to run.
  16. for the most part you are starting off with the wrong sort of dog, if you intended having a dog to bark at deer then a teckel or gwp from good german lines may have been a better bet, they haven't had to trait bred out. the only way i could advise is to seek out another dog that already barks on command and try and train it in by barking them up together, nz huntaways are natural barking machines and this is how we do it on the farm.

shame you have made ya mind up so quick. the gwp has alot more going for it than a gsp unless you are after a big running hyper active shivering whining mutt

is there much difference apart from the coat mate, they are the opposite of each other, gwp's are not and should not be hairy gsp's. do some research on the breeds is my advise.

you ask about a gwp and ended up with the gsp.........
  21. fair to say the all blacks are no longer happy to be playing the best team between world cups and are doing well by breaking in new players who will hopefully mature to make an impact. south africa and it's new style of kicking a game to death makes for boring rugby but it works bloody well.
  22. all good is that 57 years unbeaten ?
  23. well done..... what are his bloodlines, he looks similar to the drahthaar i have here, kervinshoff, german bruinfield lines.
