  1. The hornet firing a 35 gn v-max bullet and zeroed at 150 yds will be 1" high at 100 yds and still carry 375 ft/lbs of energy.and at 150 yds 266 ft/lbs,compare that to a .17,at 100 yds only 116 ft/lbs. No contest. IMO a .17 is a superb rabbit rifle up to 150 yds ,but doesn't carry the energy to be a really effective fox rifle. My .22 CZ Hornet is the best rifle I have for the purpose,I quite often use it instead of the .223. Alan
  2. My FAC says .22 r/f and I have a wmr,and a .22lr, I did ask my FEO and he said that .22r/f covers all r/f,so no problems with it here. Alan
  3. Fight The Ban. you are so correct in what you say.A few years ago my father was in hospital 20 miles away and I was on benefits, so when I visited him in hospital I decided to claim my travelling expenses back, but, was told that I couldn't.BUT,if he had been in PRISON I could!!! What a crazy way to treat people! Alan
  4. I agree 100% with this poster, I had a massive heart attack in 1993 at the age of 47,having worked up till then,I was told by the specialists that it would be unadvisable to try and work again,in 1994 I had quad by-pass surgery, but, 8 days after I had another heart attack.I was advised to apply for DLA (Disability Living Allowance) but, was turned down 6 times, even though I had the proof of my condition,I finally got the dla awarded,but,18 months afterwards,I was visited by a doctor to "test" me,and 1 week after I was threatened with court for defrauding the agency.I took it to a tribunal with
  5. I just wish that more would see it as a really serious alternative to a .17hmr,the reloading cost can be less than the cost of .17 ammo, the other plus side is the amount of energy in the .22 hornet making it ideal for fox as well as rabbits. Alan
  6. You're welcome,Bob,the wmr has an effective range for foxes up to 150 yds,and still carries a lot of energy, whereas the .17 is a lot lower.I know that there are users of the .17 who will disagree, but, check out the figures. A.17hmr at 100yds has 116ft/lbs,and a .22wmr has 155ft/lbs.As a long distance rabbit only rifle I think it takes a lot of beating. Alan
  7. I've got a .22 hornet and reload for it,13gns Lil'Gun powder and 35gn V-Max bullets.will take out foxes up to 200 yds and does a very good job on rabbits(head shot if you want them for the pot) also ideal for corvids. Alan
  8. I have the .22WMR firing Winchester 34gn Jacketed Hollow Points,IMO it's a better round for foxes as well as rabbits,my FEO doesn't like the .17 for foxes, but, I think the .17 is a great long distance rabbit gun. Alan
  9. I had a visit from my FEO yesterday( I meant Friday,I keep thinking it's Saturday, another senior moment,LOL) as i've put in for a .243.We were discussing different calibres for fox,and he said that it's LEGAL to take fox with a .22r/f at close range,BUT did say "what is close range?"he didn't advise it nor was in favour of .17 r/f for fox either.prefering a minimum of .22 c/f (Hornet) Alan
  10. Your a sick man stig. LOVE IT. mate no one was gonna pay 2 grand for a t - shirt
  11. I've just checked the item on e-bay and his DSR is very poor Item as described is only 4.5 Communication 4.1 Dispatch time 3.8! Postage 4.2 i thought that if a seller had less that 4.5 in any of his ratings then e-bay acted on it. Alan
  12. I agree, report it to e-bay and you should get a refund.I've done it twice now and E-bay/PayPal have been really good about it. Alan
  13. A good website to use for reloading data is Reloaders Nest, I don't have any recommendations for powder as I only use Hodgdon, sorry. Alan
  14. Get the Lee Challenger kit for starters, then you can keep the lightweight Challenger press for seating the bullets, when you have later bought heavier press(Lee do a heavier one) for the resizing job. That way you can load one cartridge at a time instead of doing a batch of resizing and then having to change the dies for seating the bullets. http://www.peterlawman.co.uk/reloading.php Most people like RCBS powder scales! I bought the Lee Anniversary kit and the Lee dies for .223 and .22 Hornet, the only extras that I bought were the case trimmer, and the tool for chamfering the case, plu
  15. I agree,it's totally gone off subject.I reload for my .223 and for my.22 hornet and have found better consistancy and it's cheaper than factory fodder.Besides,I ENJOY it. Alan
  16. Not a bad idea to reload, but, what powder, amount of powder, and where to get the dies? I've got the press and all the bits to reload my hornet and .223,and would definitely have a go using 35gn v-max bullets that i've got for the hornet. Alan
  17. Really well done, and great photo's.. Makes me more determined to get a couple of ferrets and have "a go", lots of reading up to do first though. Alan
  18. I'd be interested in some as well. Alan
  19. I buy 250 Winchester Supreme .22WMR 34gn jacketed hollow point for £41., just over £16 per 100,.17hmr is between £8.50-£11 per 50.that's £17-22 per100. The .17 in a 10mph sidewind will move 8-10ins off target at 100yards.I don't have the figures for .22wmr to hand ,but, will look them up. Alan
  20. The Hornet is fast becoming a popular calibre again, loads from 35gn-55 gn can be used, but, to be honest 55 is a bit heavy, best weight is 35gn v-max over 13gns Lil'gun powder, great fox round!!and is good for long distance rabbits(head shot). Also,a lot of feo's are liking this calibre as a first step to centrefire. Alan
  21. On my fac, i've got a .22lr and .22wmr,both listed as 22R/F.when I questioned my feo he said that R/F covers ALL rimfire rifles, whether it's .22lr, .22wmr, of .17 hmr. I use my .22lr for short range rabbits on my permission, and the .22wmr is used when I visit some of my permissions where it's difficult to get close, I also have a.22Hornet,in my opinion the best rifle that I own and use, covers the shooting of rabbits AND foxes. Alan
  22. From 1st March 2005,Bird Pest Quarry list under the Wildlife and Countryside Act "General License" includes the following, Woodpigeon, Feral pigeon, Crow, Rook, Magpie, Jackdaw, Jay, Herring Gulls, Greater Blackbacked Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, collered doves, and Canada geese. Alan
  23. Under the general license, Herring Gulls,Greater Black backed gulls, and lesser black backed gulls are classed as vermin and can be shot, air rifles could be used, but,it would take a head shot to kill them. Alan
  24. A sad day indeed, just remember all the good days that you had. Alan
