Quick question im not a bird knowitall this might sound stupid but are there different types and which should u shoot and which shouldnt you shoot?

Hi guys Ive had a GAMO Shadow 1000 with telescopic sights for a fair while now and its running well So i thought id give pigeon hunting a bash, if someone could give me a basic lesson on how to lure the blighters into my back garden and blow em away as they say. Any help would be grand thanks!
