.22LR supersonic or "stinger"

Never tried the CCI subs in mine, have put Winchester and Remington through it and found the Remington group better in mine but there's not much in it. -
.22LR supersonic or "stinger"
Colster replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I found if I zeroed my .22LR with subs at 60 yards, CCI Stingers were zeroed at about 95 Yards. Noisy but no more so than HMR, that's the great thing about .22LR, with decent ammo it can do the job of FAC Air and HMR just by changing ammo. -

I need to spend some more time on them but found them ok on targets at 80yards - hitting 2 inches high on a scope zeroed with subs at 60yards...I think from memory we found them back on zero at around 95 which would work great for me as I could swap them in without having to re-zero -

That's another very good point in favour of LR, you have the flexibility to use different ammo, subs for when you need to be quiet, Supersonics (Stingers etc) for when you can trade a bit less silence for a bit more punch (up to HMR levels), if only the low speed subs could be more consistent. CB Longs are fine in mine at say 40 yards (possibly filling a FAC Air role) as long as it's a warm day, cold ammo goes all over the place. -

As to whether you'd be allowed on your FAC to shoot foxes really depends on your area FLO. Most don't consider rimfire to be a foxing rifle, some will allow them as "opportunistic fox" but you'd need to check. For bunnies, you can't beat a CZ 452 .22LR, cheap to feed, super quiet and accurate to 80ish yards, under a lamp you shouldn't have a problem getting within that distance of a bunny. -
You'll probably have more luck getting a SYSS or YoDave trigger kit (same basic stuff anyway) - although I'd wait until you get the gun, mine didn't need lightening (was 2.5lb break from new and I gather this has been some other peoples experience with brand new CZ's) As to your gunshop not having it in stock seems a bit strange, took my gunsmith 2 days to get a 16" Silhouette in from Edgar Bros. Cracking rifles I have to say, never seen any point spending the extra on Anschutz or Sako, just buy a better scope or beer or something.

Norfolk have a number of "new boys" at the moment. Mine is very cautious about agreeing to anything, he told me I probably wouldn't get expanding ammo on a first ticket and I'd have to wait until renewal! Luckily the office intervened... they told me if I was applying for pest/vermin control, expanding ammo was put on there by default.

They always cash the cheque - if they don't grant then they send you a cheque back. What he said...

Yes, you will I had .177 and .22 FAC Air on mine originally because as I was planning to buy it second hand it would give me flexibility to grab a bargain in either calibre - that wouldn't wash with the FLO and they said I had to choose because I couldn't justify owning both. Wasn't a problem as I didn't really want .177 in FAC so went with .22 On your licence it would probably say for ground game/vermin for both but your FEO will want to know why one won't do. Usual reasons are things like HMR for long range, LR for quietness but you'd need to demonstrate that your permission has area

Not wanting to throw any spanners in the works but where do you guys see 17Mach2 fitting in here? Actually heard one the other day and was surprised how well it moderated but don't know much else about them apart from ammo can be a bit scarce

You're correct, off-hand shooting is standing with no rest. I could only base my answer on my rifles, my CZ is actually a little lighter than my air-rifle and being shorter (16" barrel) also better balanced so I would expect my groups to be better with my rimfire against my air-rifle. I'd expect a decent PCP to be about the same as a rimfire if each is shot within it's optimum range. Basing it on 50yards, I'd expect the HMR to be tighter than a non-FAC air-rifle but as you say the limiting factor really is the shooter.
-
You don't say what sort of air-rifle but I would expect my groups off-hand to be tighter with my CZ .22LR Silhouette than my Gamo Whisper X simply because the CZ has a better trigger and much less recoil. A spring air-rifle will recoil fowards first, then start moving backwards (hence why they're so hard on scopes), with practice you can allow for this and reduce the effect but it still pushes the gun off target a little. If you're shooting a half-decent PCP, I would expect them to be much the same at their respective zero range (25-30 for air, 50-70 for rimfire) although 50 yards is l

Have a look on here - bunch of lads were getting some interest together to order some 10 shot ones direct from CZ http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=111666

That is a fantastic idea! I tried this one and my black lab went nuts! http://www.varmintal.com/highpc1.mp3

Hmm, mine says RF but apparently a gunshop would be unlikely to sell me a WMR. Never tried though, quite happy with my LR

One of the farms we shoot on has a lot of hare so we do take the occasional one but only if one of us wants it for the pot - Dunno if this applies to all ferrets but his won't eat Hare!

Don't get caught out by the "...and where do you keep your keys?" question. Tell him you can't tell him and he'll be happy

where have all the rabbits gone?!
Colster replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well went out Tuesday and they were very thin on the ground. Got 4 and a Hare (don't shoot many Hare but this particular farm has a couple of fields overrun with them). We decided to have a look over onto another farm which my mate recently got permission to shoot on, as we hadn't told the landowner we were coming we didn't shoot any as we couldn't be sure the horses would be away but 2 paddocks had about 20 just sitting out, not lamp shy at all. -
where have all the rabbits gone?!
Colster replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just been out for a walk with the dog on a bit of land near me where I can rough shoot during the day (farmer won't allow night shooting) and the hedges that were previously riddled with rabbit holes look like Mrs Fox has evicted them. Lots of fresh earth outside the hole and the hole is now bigger. Something an old gamekeeper told me a while back kind of ties in with this, he mentioned about vixens evicting rabbits when they are pregnant and that they will dig out 3 or 4 holes before they settle on one to give birth in. So as this particular farmer won't let me shoot foxes on his land -
what scope best for .223 .243
Colster replied to basinator's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
£500 should put you nicely in S&B terrority, worth having a look here - http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/CUSTOMER%20S_H%20STOCK%20LIST.pdf -
Depends really... if you're lamping and aiming to get these 15 rabbits in one evening, then .22LR all the way. Under the lamp it's easy to get within 60 yards of a bunny and being so silent you'll often manage to shoot one without spooking the others so you can shoot again. If you're looking to eat what you kill then again .22LR. HMR or .223 will do more meat damage and even a head shot means you have a very messy corpse to cart round with you for the rest of the night. I never have myself but I gather people do take the odd fox with .22LR, usually with HV ammo. A mate of mine carries

Only way to know, put the app in and look suitably penitent for your interview. They return the fee if the application is turned down.

what calibre for muntjac?????????
Colster replied to gundogbob's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Look on your cert, it says on there what you can shoot. I'm guessing it says Vermin, Deer are NOT vermin. To be honest, I'm amazed that you don't know that already but at least you asked before you went out shooting. -
What caliber do you like for fox shooting?
Colster replied to whippeter69's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Nope need centre fire. Not necessarily true, it depends on the firearms dept that he deals with. Some will pass .17HMR for fox outright, some for "opportunistic fox" only, some consider it included when specifying "Vermin" on the FAC (in which case it could be an implicit approval for .22LR), others will treat it separately and put "Fox AND Vermin" If you're considering HMR for fox, I'd speak to your FEO first and get his thoughts (as they do vary from area to area). I think most people on here however would suggest a small centrefire for a dedicated foxing rifle, regardless of what -
