..is no good for deer Thanks guys, it's a way off yet but looks like .223 could be for me as it would probably get more use on deer than foxes but am worried if I went .243 I'd be limiting myself to land that could accomodate it while I go through the closed ticket stage.
-
So if I understand this all correctly, there is little to choose between .222, .223 and .22-250 in terms of their noise (when moderated), the cost of factory ammo and it's availablity and their flat shooting trajectory apart from .22-250 will give you about another 50yards of "aim on" accuracy?
-
Aren't they all pretty flat shooting? I was under the impression that all those calibres mentioned were all pretty flat shooting, particularly .204 but correct me if I'm wrong as I'm also considering the same thing as dazzb, although I would want it for small deer to so .204 would be out.

I have two that I'm waiting for at the moment, one is in a different forces area so I emailed all the land and landowner details to my FLO and they pass it on to the appropriate area FLO, the other I rang my FEO, he asked me to send him a copy of the permission letter and a map outlining the boundaries.
-
It's not a bad idea to send the permission letters off anyway to your FEO for the ones where the land is already cleared. It's shows him you're gaining experience on different bits of land which will help your case when you want to get your cert opened.
-
Can't believe people put posts like this up.. we all had to work for our permissions, we don't have spare ones! On the off-chance though that somebody reading this takes pity on you... telling them where you are might help

I have a .22LR CZ452 Silhouette in 16" and would throughly recommend it. Light and quick to handle, ideal if you're shooting from a 4x4/crawling through hedges. My local gunsmith quoted me £20 more for the shorter barrel but I had been quoted up to £70 more.

At the end of the day Bob, all you're going to get on here is opinion. Nothing wrong with that but none of us know whether your mate's FEO will grant these. Best advice I can give, is to ask for what he actually wants from the start and be prepared to justify it's need. A FAC isn't a right like an SGC so there maybe some horsetrading going on when the FEO does the home visit where he may try and downsize the calibres he'll grant but as long as your mate is prepared for this and ready to state his case clearly and succinctly he "should" be ok.

.22lr ans .17HMR on first FAC?
Colster replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As Deker said, I'm guessing what you read was the Home Office guidelines to FLO's. It DOES say in there that .22CF should be considered the minimum for fox but this isn't embraced by all FLO's and some will allow rimfires for fox. That is their decision and then you could have a fox condition for rimfire on your FAC. As I said before the most confusing bit is some FLO's classing Fox as Vermin and allowing fox by implication - I think it should be clearly stated "Fox and Vermin" or "Vermin and Opportunistic Fox" where they are allowing a licence holder to shoot foxes. -
Just include it, you can't be wrong then

Very true! I went to my insurance company to get all my SP30's that had long disappeared off my licence so I didn't fall foul of this. It's all about being honest. For SGC, there are specific ways you can fall foul of the law which will prevent you from being blessed with one (3 years inside for example) but SGC is a lot less stringent. Having said that, if you've no history of criminal problems, no psycological problems and you've got your land and cabinet all sorted, an application for rimfire/FAC Air will be no problem. For the big stuff, they'll pay more attention to your previous shoo

.22lr ans .17HMR on first FAC?
Colster replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I like to see where you found this... not trying to start a war here but my understanding is it's illegal to shoot foxes if you don't have a condition for them on your FAC. In which case, it's down to the FLO/FEO as to whether they allow certain calibres for fox in their area. There are Home Office guidelines which stipulate that their advice to FLO's is that the smaller .22 centrefires (.22Hornet, .222, .22-250 etc) should be considered the minimum but regardless some forces will allow HMR/WMR and even LR for fox because these guidelines are just that, guidelines not law. I think the -
They cash them anyway... they're refunded if the application is unsuccessful

Mine was 6 weeks exactly from taking in the forms to receiving my SGC/FAC, they quoted me 6-8 weeks when I took the forms in so can't complain. It varies widely though from area to area and obviously depends on their workload/staffing level at the time.

It's a tricky one, there are rules regarding time served and issue of a licence (3 years inside = never get a licence) but minor non custodial convictions are seemingly down to the individual interpretation of his FLO/FEO. If he had a good relationship with his FEO, then I'd suggest just ringing him and getting his views. If he only met the guy when he came and swung off the cabinet (not unusual for shotgun cert holders as they never need land checks doing), then I don't know what to suggest.
-
I'm assuming that where you live and where this land is comes under different force areas? This confused my FEO too. I spoke to the area FLO covering the land I've been asked to shoot and they confirmed that the land has never been surveyed but the neighbouring fields are cleared to .22LR (which is what I want to use there) and they said that I can't request a survey from them and that the request has to come from the force which issued my FAC. I put all the details on an email on the 20th Jan, phoned one of the girls in the FLO last week and she couldn't find it so I gave her all the

.22lr ans .17HMR on first FAC?
Colster replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yes, that's fine, most cabinets will accept more guns with some careful stacking. Regarding Clint's suggestion you would need then to provide reason for the centrefire's too. Fox is often a good reason as a lot of forces won't clear HMR for fox but sounds like you're already using the fox to justify the HMR but no you don't need to buy the rifle's just because you have slots for them. However, come renewal time if you haven't filled your slots, your FEO is likely to try and take them back but you have 5 years before you need worry about that. -
As far as I'm aware if you're selling a gun then you fill in HIS cert, nothing gets written on yours. Here's the form I use but it doesn't need to be anything official as long as it has this information on it NOTIFICATION of TRANSFER or DISPOSAL of a FIREARM or SHOT GUN.doc

FAC application and footpaths?
Colster replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The FEO would consider it when surveying and expect you to know it's there so you can shoot accordingly (stalk so you shoot away from the footpath, not over it etc). Apart from that you'll be fine. -
Just buy a SAK or Sirocco - the Sirocco is a little more fiddly to clean but they'll both do the job well.

I have a CZ Silhouette in 16" and as said above the powder burns out within about 12 inches, you then get a little more acceleration before the barrel will start to cause friction and slow the bullet down again. I remember seeing some tests where the optimum barrel length was about 18" but the differences were nominal. The 16" is just so good for using in a vehicle too that that swung my choice and I'm very pleased with it. Careful you don't get tucked up by the dealers though, I was quoted anything from £20 to £70 for the shorter barrel version. Paid £340 for mine and the new ones seem

complete shooting ban on all feather
Colster replied to watchman's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'd go Wood Pigeon too, can be shot with a variety of guns, lots of them about, quick to dress and good to eat. -
It's 3 years. atb Col.
