You'll benefit in that you won't need to get as close but the first shot will still send all the birds up. The bullet impact either in the bird or in the ground will send the nearest birds up, the rest will follow. So on balance worth a go as you won't scare them any more than a shotgun would, the advantage with a shotgun though is you can take them in the air.

You can still shoot Lesser Black Backed Gulls but not Herring Gulls . It's Herring Gulls that were removed from the Licence.

Yep, hasn't affected mainland UK yet but NI and Scotland have it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8440441.stm They don't usually state a date when the ban ends, it usuallys gets re-appraised every 7 days I think.

For your rimfires I'd suggest a nice brace of CZ's. Maybe one Silhouette and one Style (so you can tell them apart). I have a .22LR Silhouette and love it to pieces. It's just bombproof and fairly cheap (paid £340 for mine in 16")

New year bump -
I bought a BSA one in the end, was on offer from sportsmanguncentre. The ammo safe is a bit tight (same as in the Brattonsound) but it's fine for a .22LR bolt and ammo, if I had something bigger (centrefire) I might need an extra ammo safe. Don't forget you need the deep one if you want to keep scoped rifles in there. I much preferred the look of the BSA one as it comes in British Racing Green, rather than Battleship(Primer) Grey. FEO was more than happy with it.

It used to have to be a "person of standing in the community", same as you would need to sign a passport application but I got a mate who's a glazing manager to be my countersignatory. He was also one of the referees on my FAC. The firearms office never contacted him regarding either application

If it's been a couple of weeks it's worth giving them a quick ring and asking for an update.

So glad I moved to the country, I regularly shoot in mine but I have the blessing of my FEO and no neighbours. I also have permission on the fields that surround my land so can nip out and do some rough shooting of an afternoon.

what did you get for christmas?
Colster replied to bicykillgaz's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Got a nice pair of Mac-Wet shooting gloves from Mother-in-law. Can't recommend them highly enough, keep your hands nice and warm when you're out rough shooting (like I was today, attempting to get a Herring Gull in the last few days we're allowed) but you can still handle fiddly things like airgun pellets, cartridges or rimfire ammo. -
I have both, was originally just going for FAC but it then occured to me that you can buy shotguns quite easily for under £100, so added the extra £10 to my fees to go coterminous and bought a second(at least) hand Baikal 12g SBS for £60. Now have something I can use in the back garden on pigeons as they fly over

Met some bloke out walking his dog while ferreting a few weeks back and he was bragging about how he could get 4 2 1/2" carts in his Browning. Which I thought was a bit daft considering he didn't know me or my mate, either of us could have been off-duty police or FEO's. Whether you can do it or not, don't... unless you want to have your Shotgun declared Section 1 and then you know you're in the clear and legal.
-
They are well known for cycling problems with sub 3" carts. Some lucky people have ones that will cycle anything but it seems the exception rather than the rule so either feed it the big stuff or sell it.
-
Or better still do them for kidnapping

Nice work, sounds like a good way to spend the day to me What rifle?
-
It all really depends on your budget. You can spend thousands on a shotgun but you can also pick up perfectly serviceable old guns for under a hundred. There is a lot of snobbery around shotguns but a side by side will be pretty much accepted anywhere. Baikal make good, tough and functional guns and you will often see very old but still perfectly shootable guns for sale. I myself have a Baikal 12g SBS, chromed barrels which are still like mirrors and it shoots fine. For rough shooting you may well find a non-ejector preferable, I know I do. The land I shoot on, I wouldn't leave empty c

any good advice welcome please
Colster replied to allrounder lad's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Sorry but that's not true. They generally cash the cheque soon after the application has been submitted but do say they will refund in full if the application is turned down. Allrounder, All the best for getting your SGC in the end, best advice I can give: Stay calm, stay honest and stay factual - they can't argue with that. -
Picked up my CZ452 Silhouette today, popped a Simmons WTC scope on it and have to say damned nice. Kept nipping out as it got dark to see how well it worked under failing light and was very impressed. Not bad for a scope that cost me under £70 second hand without a mark on it and for rimfire ranges it will do the job no trouble. Heard others speak highly of MTC Mambas and Vipers for rimfires. I'd spend more on the one for your centrefire, go mad on a Schmidt and Bender.

I agree with the Keep it simple principle, so on that note: Simmons Aetec 2.8-10x44 Mint Condition Strong as an Ox, no fiddly bits, just good quality lenses that suck in lots of light and the best tolerance for eye relief I've ever had on a scope even on high mag you can see full view through it without having to have your head a precise distance from the scope which makes it great for shooting from a variety of positions.

No, a shotgun is easier to obtain permission but you still have to justify it's use. However, for a FAC you have to actually state where and produce a signed permission letter from the landowner authorising you to shoot. I started off with an air-rifle hunting rabbits on foot on a farm which provided me the land permission I needed to apply. The other route is to join a club, serve your term as a probationary member (usually 6 months), then they will be your justification for owning a firearm.
