I applied for a 22RF first up. When the FEO came I said actually I want a 22WMR, he said fine. When I got my FAC it still said 22RF so I thought well fine that obviously includes LR and WMR. So I went to the dealer to pick my WMR up and he said well technically it should say WMR. I told him what happened and call the FEO if you're in doubt. He said no worries. When buying ammo from the next place same ting, they both took my word and I believed I was in the right. When the cops got my notification of purchase they called me up and said I wasn't allowed that rifle. I explained what happened

new BRNO BO98 - mauser 98
harrygrey382 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for the comments. In all my searching of the web about various mausers and CRF rifles the thing that came up most was heated arguements of CRF and pushfeed. It was boring. I want a mauser partly because it's the oldest (so stood the test of time the most) BA style, also it's inherent strength and reliability. But mainly because I like the look and feel of them! -
Well I've filled my variation forms in and sent them off. So I thought I'd jump the gun, try my luck and have put a deposit on a new BRNO BO98. After a fair bit of googling I haven't picked up anything, at least in english anyway. The dealer says it is a new model, not related to the ZKK or 550 actions. It's built on a full Mauser 98 action made by BRNO. Has anyone heard of them? The dealer says BRNO have now closed down and sold all equipment, so these new ones are pretty thin on the ground, and certainly will get more so. It looks like they haven't really made it into the english speaking

aside from the ammo availabilty, how about 25-06 being the best all rounder? Surely at least as flat as a 243 with the right bullet?
-
I'm not trying to be smart arse here, but out of interest (as I lack experience) when would a 243 be "better" than a 260 for deer?
-
Yeah, if HMR&C catch up with you that's the nd of life as you know it. Their powers are limitless. You can always decalre it though and pay duty - makes it cheaper than pump fuel and still legal. Still a fair bit more than free though... So how come toyotas and nissans aren't considered here. Hilux and D21/Navaras are IMO above a L200 in ruggedness and reliability, but they're different from a diahatsu becuase of the body shape. Surely you want it for a purpose and the size/style is the reason you go for it. What about a landcruiser 70 series SWB hardtop (I think the only 70 series he
-
oh dear, sounds like you maxed it out! Well they are a lighter duty vehicle than a landy, so they should handle more weight. What you really need is a 40 or 70 series landcruiser, toughest vehicles ever to grace this earth. Just a pitty you can't get them here...

Very Long Range Rabbit Gun
harrygrey382 replied to mattydski's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
But it seems a lot of people do it, and with a lot of success and accuracy. A quick google of cast bullets and 22 hornet gives A LOT hits. Here's one: http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/22hornet.htm No one mentions fragmenting. In fact the only problems I've heard with cast bullets was leading in the barrel - reduced by adding a gas check and reducing chamber pressure. I'm not trying to be a smart arse, but have done a little reading on the subject and haven't heard it mentioned much. Is it a problem with all cailbres, or just the smaller ones? Also Corbin makes a tool to convert spe -
A landy'd be ok with if it's a V8... As for the hilux, it just needs some ballest on the tray to give it some traction

Very Long Range Rabbit Gun
harrygrey382 replied to mattydski's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Forgive someone with little experience jumping in here, but would the ability to cast bullets make a difference? I've read about a lot of people having huge success with casting buillets for hornet, but how about the others? If you could cast that does some SERIOUS cost cutting... -
yeah that doesn't sounds bad. Why unimog axles though? I'd just stick with toyota, they don't break... Got parabolics on the SIIA though, very impressed! Also, check out new Santanas - simple (no electronic engine management) and leaf sprung. Looks like a defender too
-
This is an unusual comment. Are you saying they're not reliable? At least Toyotas, and Nissan to an extent have normally gotten stick for being thirsty, uncomfortable and slow while also being the toughest and most reliable. Certainly the toughest/most reliable vehicles ever made are the 40 and 70 series landcruisers as work vehicles (never sold in europe), and 60 series wagons. Having worked on numerous 'cruisers and land rovers I can say the toyotas embarrass land rover (and other 4x4s I seen) in terms of heavy duty build and long term reliabilty. They were never underpowered, and big mo

unless you can inspect it first, or trust the dealer/source... Then it's big bang for buck

quite a report there preditor - did youcinclude the winchester 40gr super-x? I would have thought all WMR are kind of a bit on the harsh side for rabbits and squirrels and if you want to eat them you always need head shots. Also - personally I'd never attempt 200 yards with one, but maybe that's my inexperience speaking and listening to others armchair shhot. When I get my VX-ii 4-12x40 on my 9422M I may see what happens at 200yds for the hell of it. I'm wondering if your Marlin liked the Hornady and or all light bullets because of its Microgroove barrel?
-
well even though my tests were MUCH rougher - I did at least find no improvements in the 30gr Vmax Hornadys over Winchester 40gr super-x (JHP). In fact I did get slightly better groups with the xuper-x, but I thought it was too close to call. Thanks for a far more quantative and scientific review Deker, and it supports what I was feeling. The super-x's are easier on the wallet too. Out of interest, how much are you paying for those cci 40gr? I'm paying £17/100 for super-x
-
sorry on the slow replay again Deker. I did get a chance to have a go at some targets on thursday. And as the ultimate antilclimax, I can report I couldn't find a grouping difference between the Hornadys and good old winnie super-xs. I got about 1 - 1 1/2" groups at 50 yards. This is with factory iron sites outside in a makeshift range, no wind though. I doubt if my findings hold mutch sway 'round here, but I can vouch for them giving rabits and squirrels a good seeing to. A sight is on it's way for christams - so I can post more meaningful thoughts then!
-
Sorry Deker - still haven't given them a proper go. Have taken the gun out for two days now, and I ended up having no time to hit some targets and do some proper comparing. So I still don't have anythig to report. Really hoping I'll be able to have a good go tomrrow. I'm also just a bit worried my review will mean nothing because I'm waiting for a scope - as in waiting for christmas! The open sights are only good for 60yards MAX, really less. But will compare them with my super-x for the moment...

Burris vs Leupold VX-I vs MTC etc.
harrygrey382 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
yeah you're right - I'm pinging all over the place on this one. I think as I can't find much on optimate, and the Buckmaster may well be chinese, I reckon I'll plump for the Burris. Although I am keeping an eye on Macleod's but there's nothing there right now for me -
Got them from one of my locals - PM you his if you want, but it's norfolk - and paid £23/100 Will report on their performance, although I'm very embarrassed to say I am currently scopeless... So accuracy reporting may not be meaningful. Max working range is about 60 yards for rabbits. So just to bang it home:

oh yeah I forgot he said he could get pentax scopes too. Says they are made in USA and should be sub £200... Anyone know them? -
No I haven't - I can't find a place to get them at the moment. But when I do, they're going in my rifle. After a lot of reading of the subject I have gathered this: Winchester say you can load their WRF rounds in a WMR rifle, but not a revolver. Can't remeber why, might have been something do do with leading - they're low speed and I think not jacketed. CCI (the only other manufactuer I think) says you can't put their rounds in any wmr gun, but people do and reckon they say this to cover their arses in case someone puts one in a revolver. So I'm still on the hunt for some WRF ammo. CCI

Burris vs Leupold VX-I vs MTC etc.
harrygrey382 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
ok so it's evening out... People that compare the two often put them on a par, and as the Nikon is £150, I'm not so sure now. Also, the local dealer is now recommending Optimate scopes - he says they're made in Japan and very good quality even though little know. Comfortably under £200 but no fixed prices yet. Anyone know these? Not much on them I can find, so might still stick with the Burris. Apparently they're philipino and the Nikon might be chinese? -

Thanks guys - glad you said that as I was coming to that conclusion too. Just one more though, I've been looking at the Nikon Buckmaster (3-9x40) and reviews are favourable, putting it in the same class as the fullfield. Can anyone comment on a Buckmaster? -
My girlfriend has offered to get me a scope for christmas  So I'm trying to pinpoint a <£200 scope. I've ruled a few out, and like a few. My current rifle is s Winchester 9422M 22WMR. These mostly comprise of: Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 £189 + free pair of binos Leupold VX-I 3-9x40 £199 Varius MTC offerings below 200 Can anyone compare these scopes, or top of the rangfe nikko sterlings, simmons or hawkes? I mainly shoot rabbits, the odd fox and squirrels. Mostly in daylight but lamping may come. Or can anyone recommend scopes in this price range I haven't mentioned? Thank
