  1. Anyone use beagles for rabbiting? Are they any good? I know they are great scent hounds but do they actually catch rabbits or just flush them for lurchers etc? Can't imagine one being quick enough to catch a rabbit somehow! What do people think?
  2. No worries.....that pic is insane!!! Do you take Geoff Capes around with you to carry them home???>
  3. I'm new to hunting and at the moment am just ferreting, at some point next year I want to get a whippet, bedlington or whippet/bedlington lurcher......is there anyone within about an hours drive of cheshire who has one of these dogs who wouldn't mind me tagging along on a hunting trip? I just want to see one in action before I decide what type I'm going to get!
  4. its not me by the way, most i've had in a day is 1!
  5. I want to give them the best I can, as mentioned in previous posts though giving them even the smallest amount of dried ferret food results in them being overweight....is it a case of carcasses are essential for a healthy fit ferret??
  6. I found that mine even tangle when you're carrying them never mind picking them up from a warren! and they're constantly getting tangled in twigs or the ferrets heads when they pop out of the hole, have I just got naff quality nets?
  7. Update on my amateur ferrets... I took them out yesterday without taking purse nets to hit as many burrows as possible and to try and get my ferrets to understand what they are supposed to do. First burrow we came across I put them both in and stood back, they went in and came out 30 seconds later as usual but this time I just left them to wander around and sniff around a bit and then go back in the warren, gave it 10-15 mins and then moved on to the next one. I did about 4 or 5 warrens without having a bolt but rather than only being in the warren for a couple of minutes them began to g
  8. Are 10oz purse nets a lot better than 4oz nets for not getting tangled? My 4oz nylon nets are an absolute nightmare and every time I go ferreting I end up spending ages untangling them....any advice? Are hemp nets more tangle free than nylon?
  9. Really?? Hey, I've got a mastiff...maybe I don't need a lurcher after all! Ha ha
  10. think so, there are plenty of rabbit muck around and with the first one I tried today a rabbit bolted almost straight away but the ferrets seemed completely oblivious to it. Muck outside isn't always a sure sign of it being occupied, are you using a dog for marking or just trying holes? Don't have a working dog yet, I'm just using nets. At some point next year I'm going to get a lurcher but at the moment it wouldn't make much difference as they rarely bolt anything anyway.

  12. I've got a couple of ferrets and have only just started ferreting. Have been now 4 times and each time has been the same, I've spent a good 10 or 15 minutes setting up the purse nets, put the ferrets in and they haven't quite grasped what they're supposed to do yet. They will basically keep popping up at each hole literally a minute or two after being at the other hole, they never seem to go deep into the burrow. The frustrating part about it is that every time they pop their heads out they tangle the net with their collars. So instead of having an enjoyable day rabbiting I have an extreme
  13. yes just a handful, there's always some left in the dish and like i say they're slightly overweight
  14. I am amazed at how the over all appearence of ferrets has changed in the last 15 yrs or so , i can honestly say that you never saw a fat ferret untill the show scene exploded in the late 90's , then again it could simply have been the fact you were naturally going to see more ferrets than your own if you went to a show i'm thinking i need to chuck my 8 quid a bag ferret food!
  15. that's another thing, it's only recent i've found out that cat/dog food isn't good for them and yet i've never had any problem with that either....wondering if all this ferret food business is just a marketing gimic!
  16. ah right, I didn't realise dried food makes them fat...i'll have to stock up on the rabbits to feed em!
  17. 70's??? the cheek!! usually between 6 and 8 years I think Really thats supprised me , thought it would have been lower than that Sorry a typo the 's no worries, ha ha! yes that's why I posted this, considering how bad that diet is in theory there are actually no difference between them and the ferrets I have now except for the fact they were slimmer and probably fitter....strange!
  18. can you remember on average how long a ferret lived when you kept them in the 70's 70's??? the cheek!! usually between 6 and 8 years I think
  19. Where abouts in Cheshire are you? A&D supplies in Northwich do 10 for £17 and they're pretty good.
  20. Just wondering what peoples views are on this. I've had ferrets since I was 7 (25 years ago), when I first got a ferret and probably for the first 15 years of having them % of the food I gave them was bread and milk, the rest was meat scraps and an occasional egg. According to all you read about the best diets for ferrets bread and milk is totally wrong to feed them and yet judging by the other post on here about greyhound ferrets (I'd never heard of them before yesterday!) a lot of people used to also feed them on bread and milk and these slimmer ferrets were a lot more common. Is it just
  21. I know it sounds daft as ferrets would obviously eat rabbits in the wild but am I ok giving ferrets whole rabbit carcasses to eat or is it risky with bones etc? I'm assuming I'd be OK doing this? I'm thinking of cutting the rabbit into sections and freezing it so I can just thaw out a section and feed them with it each day.
  22. Any good for rabbiting when combined with a spaniel or terrier for flushing them out?
