  1. Kennel for sale due to house move. Currently used for deerhound/greyhound lurcher that stands 32" tts so it's big enough for most dogs. Would also be big enough for 2 or 3 terriers or a couple of medium sized lurchers. The entrance has clear flexible plastic strips hanging on the door to prevent drafts. £50 ono, collection only though, from Warrington. Please email me if you need more details.
  2. put a plastic watering can in there, mine play in my watering can for hours and then fall asleep in it!
  3. no, getting a whippet lurcher pup but want to pick up a few tips and see some in action if possible.
  4. I'm new to Wrexham and was wondering if anyone who works lurchers or whippets around the North Wales area would mind me tagging along? I've only done ferreting up to now and would like to see some decent experienced running dogs in action if possible.
  5. get them a harness and a mini extending lead, you have to take them somewhere remote though or you'll end up spending an hour answering a variety of the following questions (as I have done many times): is it a squirrel? is it a beaver? is it an otter? is it a rat? is it a badger (????!!!!)? Good way of chatting up birds though
  6. sorry to hear about your loss! Sorry if I'm being thick but how did it die? Did it suffocate or break it's neck or something?
  7. No never heard of it. Ok, I'm probably going to give it a miss then I think. What do people do with their ferrets over the summer then? Or do peopke just not bother until October?
  8. Thanks for your replies. I know smoker and terrier would be the easier option but that would defeat the object, I'm after sport for my ferrets during the time when I can't take them rabbiting. The ideal scenario would be somewhere other than the rats actual hole so there's less chance of them cornering the rat and having to fight them, and also it would be easier to have them working in pairs then. If it's just not feasible then fair enough but I just want to find out as much as possible about it before I decide whether or not to give it a go.
  9. There's ferrets and there's ratting ferrets. A lot of ferrets won't face rats. I've tried loads over the years, most won't and even if they will ,they won't for long. having said that there are good ratting strains. Do rats generally fight back then or do most of them run?
  10. I want to start using my ferrets for ratting, I've got a hob and a jill. Does anyone do this regularly? I've got a few questions: Are ferrets susceptible to any diseases carried by rats? are their any jabs they can have that will protect them? Where are the best places to find rats? I've seen holes near rivers that I'm assuming are rat holes as they're too small for rabbits etc and too big for mice. Is it the same principle as rabbiting, bolt the rats with ferrets? I know some rats will stand and fight but I'm assuming a lot will bolt? Do they have several entries to the holes like
  11. No, I don't normally but everywhere you go these days you seem to hear the same old story, there's a load of them near me doing the same thing!
  12. Also, anyone that has lost a lurcher should definitely go and visit RSPCA shelters, I was at the one in Warrington last year and out of the 30 or so dogs about half of them were lurchers....probably ones that have been stolen and dumped for not working well enough.
  13. If anyone has gypsies staying near them they should try and take pics of whatever dogs they have with them and post them on here, lets face it most dogs that are stolen are stolen by them so if it's possible to get pics of their dogs it might help people track down their dogs, theiving scumbags!
  14. I thought they would be because of the amount of energy they have, do they catch many on a straight run though? I was thinking of getting a beagle but I reckon spaniels would be better for general rabbiting.
  15. Does anyone use/recommend springer spaniels for rabbiting? are they any good?
  16. Food poisoning? has it eaten any raw meat in the last day or so? Not got any bones lodged in its throat or anything like that? :-(
  17. OK, is that the case even if there's a public right of way on the land?
  18. Just after a bit of advice on where in the UK you're actually allowed to hunt rabbits? Obviously you can ask farmers for permission to go on their land but what about woodland, moors etc, and fields and wasteland that aren't owned by farmers. Are you allowed to just hunt anywhere as long as you're not trespassing?
  19. Wow! What do you feed them on?

    RSPCA

I'm a bit confused as to why everyone hates the RSPCA so much.....most people on here respect their dogs and the RSPCA is there to fight against people that don't respect their dogs, by being cruel to them or neglecting them or whatever. I can understand the anger against the neighbour that reported it because quite frankly any busybody neighbour that's making up stupid stories wants locking in a shed and starving themselves! Surely if we want to give hunting/working with dogs a good name we should be demonstrating to the RSPCA how well our animals are kept? Obviously if the RSPCA h
  21. ahh, you've answered the other question i was going to ask....I've seen vids where they're howling as they're following a scent, that'd be no good for me because the rabbits would hear and then I'd have difficult bolting them with the ferrets. do all beagles do that? I'm wondering if a spaniel would be a better option?
  22. That'll be a no then! if you have 1 give it a go at worst it wont catch the rabbit Don't have one yet, trying to decide what dog to get in the new year. At the moment I'm just ferreting with nets but I want a dog that'll be good at rabbiting.
