  1. Hi all, just had a phone call off a friend of mine, who has rats coming in to her offices ! Shes had some guys out who put poison down which was killing the rats however they were then dieing in the wall cavities and roof space creating a bad smell which the staff arnt happy with as you could imagine. Shes asked me if i know of a solution, apparently there is a poison out there that once the rats are dead it then mummifies them eliminating all the smell. has anyone heard of this kit if so what's it called and any ideas who stocks it ??? many thanks
  2. Slightly different scenario but similar i guess, the farmer of some ground that i shoot on phoned me last week to say a guy who used to shoot there many years ago has been in touch and would i mind him doing a bit ?? I explained to the farmer that it was his land and his decision, got the guys phone number and made contact explaining that i had no issue with him shooting and that he wouldn't offend me as long as we both knew when each other was on the ground. As a result he invited me round for a brew, chewed the fat about shooting for a bit and invited me out onto some of his permission.
  3. Just taken a phone call from a family friend in southern Ireland, to say the chicken coop has been raided and are trying to narrow down what exactly it is that's responsible. None of the chickens have been taken however all are headless. theres a 15 foot high wall that surrounds the perimeter, & a high fence around the coop, so trying to rule out fox !! theres no water course near by so possibly not mink !! However Pine marten have been seen, can anyone shed any light on what sign a Pine Marten would leave if it got in a coop ??? Regards.
  4. I'm after getting some footage of my trips out, and was wondering if there is a scope cam out there that anyone knows of ? If so who makes them ? Or if they have their own set up maybe brackets or some thing to adapt a digital cam corder !! I'm not overly keen on b*****d'ising my scope but any ideas would be sound. Regards
  5. I changed from a O/U to a Beretta Urika 2 and haven't looked back.As Night hunter said if your on the clay ground you'll need an auto safe to show clear, and they're generally frowned upon on some formal shoot days. But if your mainly out rough shooting / Wildfowling or sat in a hide they're the dogs. Airborne.
  6. Hi Richie I've got a Weihrauch HW 60 J With a Sak Mod, A bit dearer than what you've been quoted above, however i wouldn't change it for the world, nice feel to it and does the job i need it to do. Having said that if you want something that will stand up to a bit of abuse in your work environment you wont go wrong with a CZ. ATB

  8. Ask the farmer mate he should know whats cleared on the ground. When you put your forms in your FEO will check anyway if the land is cleared & for what calibre,if its not cleared he will walk round it with you and check it for suitability. For example a piece of new permission ive just been cleared on,a friend of mine also shoots, using a .243, i took for granted it would go through sharpish as i had a smaller calibre, The land was only cleared for .22, he was on an open ticket. Hope this helps.
  9. As above mate Rats are Neophobic which means that they dislike or are wary of anythig new, wether that be new food or something new in theirs runs. Rats are also omnivore's which means they are very versatile in the many of choices of food that they have, so if they dont like something new theyll find something else to eat. The chances are that if you leave your traps there for a while to weather, youll start getting some results. Airborne
  10. Cheers John, havn't quite weighed up placing the snares out on beats yet, so i placed them at the entrance to the burrows, on a fairly steep embankment, so no chance of anything but Rabbit getting caught in them, also theres a lot of fox activety in the area, which i trap and lamp also.
  11. Pretty much as the title say's. Only been snaring for a few months, did the research on dimensions, tensioning etc, bought the kit and made the snares, however every morning that i check them they've been knocked so i reset them and so on. Turn up this morning to find Rabbit fur around the spot that i set the snare but no Rabbit, only to find the snare wire chewed thro, and remains close by. Sods law the first one that i get a fox has nailed it !! Is this common ?? if so what can i do to prevent it from happening again ?? Very frustrating... thanks in advance for any replys.

  13. Just been and picked up my new 17 HMR. Ended up with a Weirauch HW60J / With a Hawke frontier 6-24x50, Really pleased with how it looks and feels, will be zeroing it tomorrow weather permiting. The rounds that i got are Remington Premier Magnum Rimfire (17 Gr) !! Does anybody have any experience with these that can tell me what they are like, or tips on range for zeroing as everyone that i speak to tells you something different ? Cheers
  14. Going to need to get another gun safe shortly, and thinking of getting a fabricator friend of mine to make me one, instead of buying one from a shop. Does anyone know what spec they need to be ? as in minimum Thickness / Gauge of steel etc ? any other details that need to be taken in to acount ? Regards
  15. The birds will generaly land into wind mate. If you can, try and have the wind on your back, and set your deeks out in a horseshoe pattern going away from you, with the front of your horseshoe starting where your killing zone is, this way you will channel the birds straight in to you.youll be able to tell if they are comming in because they will set there wings, this will be obvious when you see it. Hope you have a good bag.
  16. what abount NV for the 17 would it be worth it ? whats your thoughts on some of the earlier generations ?
  17. At last i've just got my ticket thro, So im now in the market for a 17 HMR and a .223 Im going to get the smaller rifle first,so any advise on a complete set up would be appreciated. Would be interested in knowing who makes the best 17 ? What would be a decent scope for this calibre ? Im out mainly at first & last light & Moderator ? Cheers Airborne
  18. Anyone any advice or experience on the best tool for humane dispatch. For dispaching foxes only from traps. Cheers Airborne
  19. Hi mate Still in the process of doing mine, had a phone conversation with my FEO the other day and he informs me that they will aprove 17 HMR for fox (Warwickshire) And to also to put down .222/.223 then youve got the choise of both. Hope this helps.
  20. TBH mate i would not shoot a fox over 100 yds with an hmr especially if the shooter is inexperienced, as for the 22-250 verses the 223 noise issue i would suggest you try a decent mod like an ASE. My 22-250 is quieter with a ASE mod than my old 223 with a T4 and for the velocity seekers I'm pushing a 60gn Nosler out at 3800fps pretty flat as well Cheers mate, To be fair the majority that ive had ive managed to call in quite close and taken with the shot gun, Theres still a few stuburn ones out there, prob looking at about -90 yds, no further.
  21. Quick update Just spoke to my FEO and been told that they have no problem with aproving 17 HMR for fox, which im pleased with, because it may be a case that i can only get clearence for my smaller permission, at least i no i'll be covered. As with the larger calibre have been advised to put .222 / .223 on the form. If all goes well; what stainless synthetic options have i got in the 17 HMR thats reliable and consistant ? funds not a problem as ive got a rifle to chop in. Regards
  22. Cheers all for your replies. Much appreciated.
  23. OK So if i went with the .223 what options have i got ? Any recomendations ? I quite like the look of a synthetic stock with stainless steel barrel.
  24. Advice needed please I am currently applying for my FAC, and looking for advise on the best all round calibre for foxes ? I have been advised on 17 HMR, however i have also read elsewhere that this is not a suitable round for Fox, The .22 250 has also been recomended ? I'm ex military so rifle orientated and safety concious, and have access to 840 acres, but there's other people already cleared on this ground, so failing that i have another 50 acre permision, Whats the minimum acreage that could get clearence for a decent fox round and what would its calibre be ?? Regards A
