  1. hi all, i have a pair of max 4 polar zone boots.

    like these:

    post-39314-0-14758100-1345537121.jpg

ok so it says that they are waterproof and i suppose they were for a while but i have them a year now and once water hits them they soak it up like a sponge.

i have been through a few sites looking for advice on the upkeep of them or should i be coating them with something but cant find any info anywhere !!

i was in a hunting shop yesterday and came across a product called "mcnett thunder shield waterproofer" which is a silicone water repellent so i bought that.

i have now applied 2 coats to the boots but have not been out in the wet yet to test them.

so does anybody else have a pair of these and how do they keep them waterproof ??

  2. a lot of folk fish down by the lighthouse not sure where tho but there are beaten tracks that you could follow, there are a lot of steep slopes there to the sea so just be careful.

also as you pass by the beach there and cross the cattle grid that says no entry go up past the first corners and as you come to the second corner just park on the grass there, you will see where cars have been parked by the grass.

just walk to the sea, keeping to the left there should be another well beaten path to it.

    have a look here:

  4. Wondered about that myself Billy, some of them flies are huge though,i could see it ending in tears trying to set the hook with a 6 wt :bad::cray: ,having said that it is tempting...... :hmm: Dave

 If i used my normal fly gear i would not be able to lift some of them fly's, and to set the hook, my rod would be bent over to the handle, but i have got a 8dt line and a 8-9 weight rod that never get's used and i have been thinking of trying it out, but have heard you need 10-11 wt gear, thank's for the set up guide niall, if you made your own trace's, would you have a loop one end and a safe-lok link the other end, or is there some other link, thank's.

that is pretty much it for me on the trace, yeah the loop on one end and the safe-lok on the other.

just depends what type safelock tho. some types wont let you pass the eye of the hook on the fly due to the shape.

the snap swivel works great with me

    post-39314-0-73149100-1340180941.jpg

but the cross lock snap swivel wont pass through the eye of the fly due to the you bend !!

  5. Sometimes lures take a good few casts to wet them before they will sink mate  you could also put some GINK on the mono (or mud!)this will make the mono sink, pulling down the fly, again im no expert these are just tips i picked up,its a funny thing on the waters ive fished people have generally been really hepful ,passing flies round that are working that day etc, christ when i first started carp fishing years ago if anyone was within eyesight people wouldnt cast in case someone saw there bait :icon_eek: I once saw an angler strip and dive in to find bait on the bottom in a recently vacated swim where a guy had caught a 15lb mirror  hope some of this helps,Dave

aye i wet the fly in the water before i used it, squeesed it like a sponge a few times that done the trick.

and i think i will stick with the sinking line as it has done the buisness so far so i think i have found the setup i like and will stick with that for a while tho will be experiment inbetween.

    cheers

  6. well done niall never done it myself but seen it on tv were a pike crashes out of the lillie pads taking the fly its something thats taking big now and also for carp on the fly  john

well we normally trawl the water that we fish on because of the sheer amount of water there is to cover.

when either of us hook into a fish on the trawl we switch off the engine and reel the fish in but what ever the effect of a pike being caught on the trawl has on the pike it seems to knock the pike out if you know what i mean.

in other words the pike could be reeled in just like an old boot and no life out of it untill it reaches the boat when it then decides to try to get away.

but with the 2 fly caught pike, from the moment they were caught till the moment i netted them in the boat, they were full of beans all the way.

jumping all over the place pretty much like a trout.

great craic to see and feel.

  7. the rod is a 9ft 10 weight, the reel is a 7/8 but i think i need a bigger reel !!

i have floating and sinking line.

i make the leader myself 30lb (prob should be heavier) tied to a normal wire trace.

i started with the floating line but the lures would not go under the water so changed to the sinking and that made all the difference, the flies went right where i wanted them to go.

like i said above this is pretty new to me so if it seems wrong dont be afraid to correct me or give a few pointers.

(also if ye want to tie me up a few i would be more than happy to give them a lash for ya) :tongue2:

What do you have coming off your flyline, is it a braided loop, then 30lb of mono, then do you use wire that you make deadbait trace's with, or some other wire, i have seen something like a stiff piece of wire with i think loop's both end's coming of the mono, then an attatchment for the fly, is this right, and do you think it would better to start with a sinking line then, is this right, just that i do want to give it ago, but would try to sort it with some of the fly gear i have first, instead of buying it straight away.

yes first the fly line then the braided loop then i have 5/6 foot of 30lb line.

i then have an ordinary everyday wire trace, the one with a clip on one end and the swivel on the other.

i get the pliars and cut the swivel off and am left with a loop in the wire trace i then tie the other end of the 30lb mono line to that loop and the fly goes on the clip end.

    that is my setup.

i do also have kevlar, kind of like braid which could be used instead of the wire trace tho i have not tried it yet.

and i am still looking at other options...

i started with the floating line and did not like it as the fly would not sink.

then i changed to sinking and the fly worked beautifully.

so i guess an intermidiate or sinking line would be the way to go for me at the minute but like i said i am new to all this and learning as i go along.

then again the floating line was usefull when i was putting a fly with a weedguard across the lillies !!

    so trial and error.

  8. My fly fishing is based largely on enthusiasm rather than skill mate :icon_redface: ive caught plenty of stockies and some coarse fish but never tried for pike with the fly.I can imagine the scrap being superb on a fly rod ,particularly at this time of year.If/when I get round to tying some up I will send you some to try  have you tried tying your own before?Dave

i have never tied my own fly but have been browsing the net at different starter kits.

i recon there would be a great buzz catching a fish on a fly that you have tied yourself.

tho i at the minute wont be purchasing a kit but will not rule it out for the future

  10. Nice catches niall, your mates catch must have been great fun on the fly rod, I haven't purposely fished for pike on the fly in a few years ni but I had two nice wee jacks on the fly a few weeks back while fishing for rainbows, as you say they give great satisfaction on the fly, even the small one's :victory:

he caught it on a spinning rod and lucky lure with 10lb line so was great crack watching him playing the fish and seeing him sweat every time it thrashed its tail and took off into the abyss. he did well to get her in

  11. ok so it is soon my birthday and i got a complete pike fly fishing setup from my missus.

i got the chance to go out yesterday and give it a road test.

by the end of the day i had managed to get 2 jacks on the fly but my mate managed a better pike on his lucky bargain bucket lure that never fails him.

i have to say there is great satisfaction in feeling even the smallest pike on the fly rod, a great feeling of every move the pike makes with the light gear and playing it till landed.

is there many others on here that bother with pike fishing on the fly ?
