A Good Day with a New Digging Friend
bshadle replied to bshadle's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
As in "Pennsylvania Dutch", then yeah. Both parents trace back to Germany, Dad's came here in the 1750s, Mom's around 1830s. The original spelling was Schaedel, or Schadel if an American keyboard would let you put an umlaut over the "a". Parents and especially grandparents were fluent in Pa Dutch dialect and still have some of the older relatives that "tock chust a little bit fonny" in English. Funny thing is, growing up as a kid the anti-German sentiment was still so strong following WWII that my family insisted we were not German, but Dutch as in Netherlands Dutch. Wasn't until years -
A Good Day with a New Digging Friend

I usually go out alone, but am finding out that two people hunting together give you a whole lot more options than when you're by yourself. Being able to take decent pictures is only one of 'em. -
Perfect day for digging. Partly cloudy, 58 degrees at 9a.m., calling for a high of 70. What a day for the middle of June. Beth K drove down from NY today for a hunt on Pa ‘hogs. Brought four dogs – Emma, Tara, Toby and Milk. I took Dot. Had several fields lined up, wanted to make sure we found quarry. Ten minutes from home and we parked at the first field. Beth started with Toby. Walked along the edge of a new bean field and checked a hole the farmer swears holds a hog. As often as I’ve checked it with the dog and gunning there’s never been anything home there and this

If she works as good as she looks, you have a winner.

Some day I'll probably look back at it and laugh. Not when it was happening, though. It still beat going to work, or plopping my a** in front of the tv. :thumbs-up:

Hot weather forecast with afternoon thunderstorms, got an early start. Left the house about 7:30 a.m. for a twenty-minute drive northwest to a farm we’ve gunned for the last few years. It’s loaded with holes and holds plenty of hogs, especially since I haven’t been shooting ‘em this year yet. Pulled down the lane and into the first field. Nice hedgerow along the south side of the field, farmer has hayed the north side but the south field is still standing. Spotted one ‘hog in the cut field as we drove in and watched it dive for cover. Made note of the location, decided to

It's real alright. Another article on it ran in our local newspaper sports section this morning. Looks even more impressive in the picture 'cause that's an 11 year old lad leaning on it, although it wouldn't look that much smaller if it was a 250 lb man. Seems he was using one of the Smith & Wesson .500 Magnum Revolver which packs a punch similar to the old standby 45/70 or a good 12 ga rifled slug. Not a round or a handgun to trifle with. The gun will handle just about any game on earth. Frankly, I'm more impressed that an 11 year old could handle the gun than the game. Add

Ditch, A level field for zero would be best, but not absolutely necessary. Gravity effects the flight path of the bullet only along the horizontal path. If your target is 100 yards away HORIZONTALLY, it doesn't matter if it's slightly uphill or downhill. If you hold for, or sight in for the horizontal distance the bullet will have the same point of impact. Now admittedly, establishing the horizontal distance is easier said than done.

You can use squirrel in any recipe you'd use rabbit. Just takes two or three to make the same amount of meat. Try dredging 'em in flour, brown 'em in a little oil, then covering 'em in ketchup, catsup (or whatever you call the red tomato sauce you use on chips there), a little water then cover and simmer until the meat starts to fall off the bone. Ummm Ummm good.

DS, If you feel the need for a bipod, look at the "Shooter's Ridge" brand if it's available there. All the quality of Harris for 1/3 less cost. Beats having to look for a fencepost or tree for a rest. The dang things are never where you really need 'em. Also, on the Boresnakes - I love mine. A quick slide through the bore a time or two after an evening out, then wipe the gun down with some Hoppes and it's good until the next time out. Wash the snake in soapy water, rinse, and let it air dry every dozen or two uses. If you pull the bolt and drop the cord from the chamber end you

I remember mine like it was only last month. Oh... That's right... It WAS only last month. You're right, though. It'll always be a memorable experience. :thumbs-up:

Well there goes earthworth and coursing in America

Figured you were probably aware of those laws. The proposed kennel regulations, from what I understand, were targetting some of the worst puppy mills rather than hunters. From what I've seen here in Lebanon County and neighboring Lancaster County as well as a few other places, SOME of them need targetting. Of course, if you choose to not follow or not enforce existing laws, I don't know that adding more laws is going to make a difference. Even at that, a pretty large coalition of sportsmen and small volume breeders convinced the Dept. of Ag to re-think their proposals. You certainly -

If that happens here in Pa. it's a simple matter to call the police and/or game commission and have the protesters hauled away. Our Pa. game laws here specifically authorize field trials for working dogs, and the law prohibiting interference with hunting specifically extends to all activities authorized in the game laws. That's not to say the protesters can't try to interfere, but it should be a slam-dunk on them if they do. Admittedly, the world is not perfect. -

Okay. Now I know what you're referencing. Last news I heard on this was: Restrictive Pennsylvania Dog Regs Sent Back to the Drawing Board Sportsmen’s Vigilance Still Necessary (Harrisburg) – A Pennsylvania regulatory panel has scrapped proposed dog care regulations that would have wrecked hunting with hounds, field trialing, and sporting dog training. Legislators have sent the regulations back to the state Department of Agriculture for a complete rewrite. A campaign coordinated by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and other dog organizations generated a torrent of sportsmen’s c -

Sorry, my mistake. Just a case of recognizing your kennel name from some previous research on terriers, and thinking I knew the person attached to it. I use the same name on all the boards I frequent. I'm from Pa. as well, and though I try to stay up on pending legislation in areas of interest, am not familiar with the "tethering"" issue. Care to elaborate? PM might be more appropriate if you wish. -

I may know you from other boards, AutumnBriar, and you may be familiar with some of the discussions there. The new legislation actually removed some restrictive terms regarding animals that might have been used by a skillful attorney to at least try to stop many earthdog trials here. Don't know if that change counter-balances the harm done to people who want to engage in activities related to cockfighting or not. Guess it would depend on your viewpoint and interests. -

The law specifically exempts states where it's legal. The interstate commerce aspect might apply though. I'm not certain of that without re-reading the actual language. -

I'm not Pat, but have been involved with discussion and research on this issue on other boards. The letter from HSUS claiming "victory" is another of their fund-raising campaigns to show their supporters they've done something with the money they collect. The bill that passed did increase penalties for animal fighting that has been illegal here for about the same time that it's been illegal in the UK. The only new action made illegal was interstate trafficing in implements of cockfighting. Since cockfighting is already illegal in almost all our states (48 or 49 of 50, depending on -
Take a look at: http://www.terrierman.com/tunneltips.htm for one man's advice and instructions on this issue. I respect his opinion and tried it with some success.

If it's legal where you're located, best bait I've ever used is live minnows seined from the waters you're fishing. Helgramites work wonders as well, but minnows don't bite your fingers when you're putting them on the hook.

Had the day off so decided to go out this morning. 50F and overcast with a 40% chance of showers, but we were only going to be ten minutes from home so decided to chance it. Hit the hedgerow where we worked a bolt two weeks ago, but in spite of seeing plenty of fresh kick out since the rain earlier this week, Dot checked several holes and didn’t find any scent she liked. Back to the truck for a three minute drive to a field across the road. Parked the truck and eyed the hedgerow across from the rural airport runway where we have permission. Looked promising, but the farmer had his da

Good looking women seem to attract 'em, at least once they're turned into coats.

Over here we usually hunt them with shotguns or .22LR, but your philosophy and advice is still good. Doesn't cost a penny to have respect for your quarry.

No draw dog, just the two JRTs in the avitar. The larger male in the back is 14.5" and spans 19", too big for most of our tubes here. Being new to this, I only take one into the field at a time. Someone told me two hands per dog is a good ratio unless you really know what your doing, and I've not experienced anything yet to prove 'em wrong. He goes out with me for what I think you call bushing there, and for hunting squirrels. Might just start telling folks he's a feist. Never hunted with one, but from what I've read of 'em a lurcher might have come in handy. If it was a really f

Been watching the groundhogs in the fields on the way home from work for almost a month now. Finally got a day off, time to hunt and cooperative weather. No rain, snow, sleet, hail, gale-force wind or plague of locusts that seemed to haunt every other potential hunting trip this season. (Okay… The plague of locusts is a stretch.) Loaded the gear in the truck and was on the way before 9 a.m. for the 10-minute drive to a nearby farm. Shot the breeze with the owner, his granddaughter and their border collie for a few minutes, then headed across a field to a hedgerow I knew held numerou
