  1. took the young'n out for a bit on the corn fields not cut yet but no rabbits to get here anyway all went years ago seen first traces of rat about and seen them but also know reynard goes on there regularly, he was marking the open drains like he'd been doing it for years and followed scent up and down ditches very well, i just sat and watched him do his thing then moved on and he started to settle down and work steadier he wouldnt dive into cover though but i'll let excperience sort that out
  2. what coulour would you say my jill is. her bodies dark sandy but she has a mask like a polecat, is she a light polecat or a dark sandy?
  3. is a medium sized canvas dummie,not the stuffed ones the ones that can float on water, ok for a size for 19" beddy to retrieve?
  4. i had sandy jill who was unpradictical shes now twelve weeks old and hardly ever nips,just flick it on the nose when it bites or goes to,it works wonders
  5. im interested in this cross a lot,but split between these and a whippet/greyhound and grey/collie,which would be best for ferreting,mooching,lamping,and gun work?

  10. anyone ferret without collars and locators,i'm new to the game so this season i'll just be running a jill through and if all goes quite i'll enter her litter mate hob,next season i'll be purchasing a locater and collar.

  12. good on ya mate, there lose of a good dog, mines straight beddy and a horse of a beddy at 19'' but got speed to match,think he will fair well to ferreting,what work do you intend to work yours on mate?
  13. thanks mate,and same to you this season.went out lastnight when it was slamming it down walked him through fields of cows and sheep off lead,didnt even look at them,he was to interested in working the hedges
  14. went out the other day on a bit of permission with my young dog to let him have a sniff about and learn whats what. he's just turned one and been a slow maturer,but finally turning out into a decent dog imho. started off sniffing rabbit sh!t then worked rock piles well and staying within a good distance of me always. so bring on the season and starting him and the new ferrets!!!!!!!

  16. does anyone just use old methods of ferret retrieval like feeding time noise,dead rabbit,banging about with a stick etc.
  17. good pictures mate,that woodpile looks a right to work for a terrier,must be a keen dog mate mine would be retrieving to air rifle and rimfire odd day shottie. are your hard mouthed?

  20. my beddy learnt recall to whistle overnight ,no treats just plenty of praise,if he doesnt listen i shout him in a gruff voice,he soon comes,but thats very rare,and whistle him on his way back.could a terrier learn the drop and stay?
  21. im a young lad and my dad got me into dogs,ferreting and shooting at an early age,he got me a dog to keep me off the streets, im greatly thankfull to him for taking the time to show me the true ways of the countryside, yet this bloke would rather have teenagers on the street?
  22. i brought in the whistle when i had voice recall bang on,the way i got him coming to whistle is lie him down make him stay the 2 peeps on the whistle and voice after then make a massive fuss,dont know if this is the way anyone else does it?is it better to start off young? or bring in the whistlewhen they are older?
  23. i had the same problem with my beddy pup at that age mate, he wouldnt listen or just run straight past me,even on the yard he wouldnt listen,so i got him on the long lead worked wonders mate.as for retrieving he'd just try and chew a ball in the alley way,so i used long lead again and now i have ball and rabbit dummy retrieved right up to hand hes nearly a year and is now a joy to own,just persevere mate also if it helps when he/she is just sniffing and ignoring your commands get some metalwashes on a tied off piece of string,enough to make a clatter,throw it so it lands next to him,but bef
