  1. Look at both diagrams. In both examples the same height mounts are used in each example but not in each diagram. The first diagram shows that it is possible to mount a larger diameter objective lens when using a 30mm tube, in fact a full 10mm larger objective lens and by doing so you will only raise the sight line by 3mm which is one of the benefits of using a 30mm tube. The second diagram shows that if you were to mount two scopes with the same objective lens diameter using the same height mounting system, the 25mm scope would not clear the action. Now theory would suggest that all you have t
  2. Believe me I have no wish to educated for free, however the below diagram is to scale and original. It's a shock that "experienced" marksmen seem to have an issue over this. The mounts are exactly the same, the only difference is the tube diameter, as can be seen using the same height mounts an objective lens increase can be achieved of 10mm by only 2mm clearance towards the bore. The use of the same height mounts would mean that on a 25mm scope the objective bell would be so low it would touch the receiver as can be seen below with both diagrams being of the exact same scal
  3. Okay, it must be the way that I am expressing my self. Take two scopes, one 3-9x56 with a 25mm tube. The other 3-9x56 with a 30mm tube. The 30mm tubed scope can be mounted with lower mounts due to the scope tube being bigger or to put it another way you would need high mounts with the 25mm tube but would only need med mounts with the 30mm tube. The resultant is that you have a better cheek weld with the stock. John
  4. 100 yards or more dependant on the light level ( I use multiple IR sources ). Don't forget it only has three times magnification as well.
  5. I did the same and then realised that the barrel didn't have steel proof marks, might also be worth you checking. BTW never found cheap 3" carts before. John
  6. Which ever cartridge you choose, try to pattern it just to be aware of the pattern. As said, 5's for high birds, I use #6 shot for low birds. John
  7. Could be for many reasons including larger internals. The PM11 is a relatively new scope and it's true to say that S&B will have reworked the internals and more over the lenses and lens coatings. As previously discussed, the two main benefits are scope mounting height and as you say internal adjustment parameters with the larger tube having a greater range of adjustment. It's also true to say that older scopes, such as the Tasco Titan range which came in 30mm format had much higher quality lenses and a very high quality matte finish to all internals which made for a most excellent and cri
  8. You don't get many "x" x 50 34mm tubed scopes to compare them to your "x" x 50 30mm S&B scope. John
  9. Okay, now stop and have a good think. Take a good long look at your scopes and you will see that a 30mm tube will enable you to mount the scope lower than a 25mm tube. To put it another way, you can use low mounts on a 30mm tube, if you needed med mounts on a 25mm tube which means you can achieve a better cheek weld with the stock, but of course you will be able to see this with your set ups if you take a gander. John
  10. Because most have 60mm objective lenses and having a 25mm tube would mean mounting the scope much too high off the bore. John
  11. There is a massive myth in the shooting community that 30mm scopes let more light in. The scopes do not as 25 mm adjustment internal are used. However there is two distinct advantages over a 25mm scope. First, you have a lot more turret adjustment and second you can mount a 30mm scope with a large lens a lot lower due to having a larger diameter tube. I have a 30mm S&B 6x42 and a 25mm S&B 6x42 there is no discernable difference with light gathering. However my 8x56 25mm S&B show slightly better light gathering than either of the 6x42. John
  12. £130 to £200 depending on the gun. John
  13. Would have to disagree with this. I have owned many shotguns, and currently own an original Escort. I can not fault the gun at all. John
  14. It's surprising what patterning can show. A mate and I were waling back to the car after a spot of decoying. He had shot a good number of birds, where as I had missed a good number of birds. We had to cross over the old farm rubbish tip and as we did I thought it would be a grand idea to pattern my shotgun. We had purchased 500 Eley Realtree(?) in 12b, it was the first time we had tried these cartridges and we were both shooting with Spanish side by sides. At 20 yards my mates gun put a hole in some hard board, mine splattered shot in all directions, 30 yards showed a good controlled pattern w
  15. Yes 100% normal but make sure you check the bedding for maggots
  16. First step would be to visit a clay pigeon shooting club. John
  17. Do yourself a BIG favour and check out Dealextream. There are many 'throwers' on there for around $50 post free. John
  18. Hope I'm not stating the obvious but do not try to turn the unit on during the day light unless you have the lens cap on. I have a full set of instructions here, just PM me. John
  19. is this repair suitable? No, you will have to drill and use dowels. Use good Epoxy wood glue as well. Do i need a new stock? No, and if you keep and saw dust you can mix it with watered down wood glue to make a filler for any minor crack marks. will the shop pay? Why would they. Some times I get bloody sick of this blame culture. You snapped it, you fix it. End of.
  20. That was my guess if I am to be honest, she is still a pup and yet to chase anything other than crows. Hey, thanks for all the help put my mind at rest!! John
  21. She is just 9 months old. 101% meat eater. Venison for her main meal with tripe for breakfast and the odd egg with cod liver oil. She has a run (long run) every night with my Collie X, which leaves me thinking she might need to cut back on the tripe a little? John
  22. Thanks for the replies. I can tell you all you want to know about tracking dogs but Whippets, well she is my first. She has muscles on muscles! I can not feel much fat. The reason I ask is that I spotted another whippet the other day and it was real skinny, I could see all the ribs. When my bitch lays down, I can see four ribs but when standing just one. John
  23. [/img] Could anyone tell me if my little bitch is too fat? Might seem silly but I don't know a whole lot about Whippets, what I can say is she is as fast as the wind. Oh and what does TTS mean? Thanks John
  24. Do 'they' still make "mini-mags"? Back "in-the-day" we used to shoot a mass of Winchester T22's which were very cheap and very accurate, with velocities just above sub-sonic. Certainly did the job on foxes at sensible ranges but I have to admit back then sensible was up to yards. These days with slightly better facts yards is a little too far. I can remember owning a HW revolver in .22LR and shooting stingers, boy did the pistol jump! Couldn't hit a barn door mind, but I couldn't hit a barn door with a pistol anyway. At one point I owned an Erma (sp?) semi-auto pistol, real small pistol
  25. There we are, you can learn something new and when they said it was like educating pork and that you were not fit to lay with pigs, I stood up for you and said 'you can learn new things and yes you were fit to lay with pigs'. John
