As lamping season and the 'witching' month is fast approaching, I was just wondering if anyone had seen or witnessed strange goings on when out lamping? The most memorable for me was along a lonely access lane one warm Septembers night. I had just been given permission to control rabbits on a local cricket club. The lane must be around half a mile long with no driving access due to a locked gate. I made my way down the lane, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted something moving, must have been seven or ten foot tall and the shape of a man. You know, just out of the corner of your ey

I am lookin at a land rover freelander station wagon
HUnter_zero replied to blane5626's topic in 4x4's, Quads & ATV's
If you see a 4x4 broken down on the side of the road, nine times out of ten it's a freelander After you have sorted all the issues out, electrical, head gasket (petrol) and everything else that goes wrong with them then you will have a good car - Stick with a Jap 4x4. Or... I recently purchased a Frontera short wheel base diesel, which has surprised me. Very comfortable, loads of power but it is a re-badged Isuzu, can be purchased for silly money. Although I did pay for this one but it's a 2000 with just 34k miles on the clock, cost me £1700 for more or less a brand new never been off ro -
Don't think they need to do that, seems like you are doing it for them. John

Come on guys, the chap was complaining about people shooting deer and leaving the deer to rot. Not sure why everyone is ripping him a new one, but taking the piss out of his Mrs is out of order. Not funny at all. John

having trouble with zeroing my browning 223 x bolt
HUnter_zero replied to arfon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i will disagree there i can shoot one rifle .25 and anouther 1" matching ammo to rifle is everything home loading is the answer .my t3 .204 shot 2" with factory ammo .once you find the right ammo primer powder seating depth trim length neck thickness most barrels will give sub .50" still working on my 1" group but i will get there I am sure Mark doesn't need my input, but I think you will find that Mark was talking about factory ammunition. Totally agree the only way to squeeze the last drop of accuracy out of a rifle is to reload and work up a load for that specific rifle. My .243 wit -
having trouble with zeroing my browning 223 x bolt
HUnter_zero replied to arfon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
1) depends on the range you are zeroing. 2) depends on the scope you are using. Presuming you are zeroing at 100 yards and your scope has 1/4" adjustment turrets. You would click 8 down / 4 right John -
having trouble with zeroing my browning 223 x bolt
HUnter_zero replied to arfon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think that's the sum of the situation. If it's factory standard then a 1" group is very good going with 1-2" groups being fair. (proper groups, everyone gets .3" now and then ) John -

It's a strange old world, more foxes have been killed over the years with a .22rf than any other calibre (IMHO) and granted more foxes are likely to have been injured with the .22rf than any other calibre but IMHO that's down to the shooter and not the calibre. In days of old, if I may call them that. Most keepers would have done their rounds with a .22rf to hand and after all it's their livelihood, the birds I mean. I'm not exactly sure when or who deemed rim fires not to be suitable for foxes, I'll hold my hands up and say I have shot and killed plenty with the first shot, not recalling -

I think your first port of call is to contact the firearms licensing office (FLO) and ask them what the land has been passed for. They will tell you what the maximum calibre of firearm you can use on the land in 'their' opinion. It is possible that the land has never been passed for any type of firearm use or it could be that back in the day it was passed for .243. Until you know that, you are in the dark. My honest and true advise is this, dead is dead and you can never be over gunned, you can never have too much power. The Internet is full of people offering advice (myself inc.) and some -
having trouble with zeroing my browning 223 x bolt
HUnter_zero replied to arfon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I am sure your rifle has a 1 in 9 twist rate, as such the 55 grain bullets should stabilise. Have you gone back to basics? Are the stock screws tight, mounts tight, scope mounted correctly and not touching the barrel? (not trying to teach you to suck eggs). Have you tried another scope? Have you let anyone else try and get a grouping? How big are the groups? I'd hazard a guess that factory fodder will produce 1" c-c at best. John -

When you say " Having trouble" what sort of trouble? It might not be an ammunition issue, more likely to be a scope or scope mounting issue (presuming the rifle is in good condition and the crown is undamaged). John -
It all depends on how exact you want to be. The first thing to remember is that all non-exact methods will vary from area to area depending on the living conditions and available food sources. For example an urban food feeding on bins may grow faster than a fox living on a remote moor. However the longevity of life may also vary due to diets as would over all physical condition. Simplistically speaking tooth ware, body weight, body length and skull dimensions are the bases for rule of thumb age estimation. the same is applied to many species. Cub to adult estimation would depend upo

As long as you can see where I was coming from. I have no wish to have an argument with you, but as I say being "ex-military" has little or no real impact on civilian vermin control and in some cases no impact at all. Okay, the .17HMR will kill foxes, but it is my understanding most FLA will not issue a .17HMR for fox control anymore. I can not speak from experience as I have never owned a .17HMR and doubt I ever will as I have no need with the exception of may be a dedicated NV set-up for rabbits due to ranges being very hard to estimate with NV scopes. The flat trajectory of the HMR would s -

It was you who had to spout the ex-forces crap! Just because you were (may have been) a soldier means nothing at all. It's like saying because I am a rifle shooter I would make a good soldier, load of old cobblers. What you were actually doing was to bring an emotive subject in to a conversation to try and back up your misguided point and it hasn't worked. You might be bloody great at a figure of eight maneuver, or driving a tank and you might be good at saying bravo one over and out but that has no reflection on civilian shooting at all, so why bring it to the conversation. With all due respect, ex-forces means diddly squat. The number of self proclaimed "ex-forces snipers" I have seen shoot, is testament. Bottom line is that a .17HMR isn't suitable for fox control. The OP requested information regrading the most suited rounds for fox, rabbit and hare. As such, the basic line here is as already said .223 & .22rf. The .223 isn't the best round for fox, but it does a wonderful job. The .22rf is an all time great and is very suited to rabbit control and well used on hare, although my favorite hare round is the .22H. All this 180 yard sh!te and 200 yard sh!te -

I must just be very lucky. I've owned a Berretta and a Franchi and both jammed. In fact after the Franchi AL48 I owned, I vowed never to ever buy another semi-auto ever again and gave the Mrs full authority to whack me on the head with the frying pan if I ever, just once did. Well I did and she did not and I have been amazed and extremely happy with my Escort. Never one jammed, not even in the slightest bit of a jam. Shot around 200 cartridges last clay shoot, not one jam, not even the slightest bit of a jam. Yes very happy. I am also very happy to see such bad reports, because if I am ever in

Yes, just nip to an electrical supplier and buys some heat shrink tubing. Maplins sells the stuff on Newport road but they are a little expensive. John
