Personally, laws aside. I would rather use a high seat & .223 than any shotgun any day. John

A few years back Mrs HZ purchased me .308 & 5.56 Russian military bore sighters. Basically push sprung rod down the barrel, and look down a lens system at the end, hey presto the cross hairs would show you the POI. I only ever used them once, and that was due to having problems zeroing a sporterized P17 in .308 which was off by a mile and a half Have to say it worked very well and enabled me to shim the scope to the approximate zero and saved me hours at the range and tonnes of ammo. Never used the bore sighters again and sold them both. John

To be honest I think the bottom line is that Sharon has stated that her and her husband are nothing to do with the people that have been allegedly ripping people off across the Internet. If this is true, then great but if it's not and believe me there are a lot of people on the Internet, they will be found out and frankly their business will go bang over night. I don't think they have an obligation to explain how they run their business, they do have an obligation to fulfill orders. So lets wait and see, and report back about the service. John

I use four, and think the poles are great. Mine are getting on a bit now, but I was given the original recipe for the matte army green paint they used to use on the poles, so I just give the pole a once over now and then. John

Governments response to the firearms enquiries is out

What starts out as a pure, sweet tasting, trickle of natural spring water, usually ends up a torrent of mud coloured water by the time it gets to the sea. John -
Always makes me chuckle, all the threats of "legal action". In general this is how it goes...... two to three years waiting for a court hearing, if by chance you win, and can prove damages which is extremely hard to do for any retail business the court my order the defendant to pay charges. Defendant agrees to pay "x" amount per week, then defaults after two months, again another six months wait for a court hearing at your cost, again the defendant loses and starts to pay damages and default costs, then stops three months later and the ball starts rolling again and again and again until on

Not all of us go Wildfowling, in fact you would be better off donating to the dogs trust as most shooters/hunters/ferreters own dogs! (not telling you how to suck eggs). In these here hard times, a small donation to ones own pocket, albeit with slightly less tax relief to the donor is always gratefully received. You come on here to defend your good name and it's ending up costing you guys money I'll get my coat....Taxi... John

It's always a good idea to contact the mods and offer a 10% discount or free P&P to THL members, now that should get you some positive feed back As I say, let your service speak for you and you will not go far wrong. John

Sharon, I don't think you will gain a great many customers by having ago at people, likelihood is that you will lose a lot more than you gain. I can see and understand why you are annoyed and I can also appreciate how hard it is to get a new business up and running with out having people "slag off" your service without knowing anything about you, however you must also appreciate the problems "the other company" has caused and the hard feelings. These days people have many options and places to purchase equipment, so I wouldn't take it personally, I'd let your service speak for it's self. One t

Electronic ear defenders "HELP"
HUnter_zero replied to J Russels's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
My comment was not aimed at you but a generalisation, but never the less if you think "muff" type defenders are a pain, try going deaf. Obviously if you are using a sound moderator you are at much less risk of hearing damage and adjusting your PPE to suit is an obvious and logical response. I have a set of Napier pro 9 here but found them to be a pain as the head band seems to part with the side bit, but I do use my kit hard and as such this might be a user fault. I use a lot of different hearing protectors in my line of work, "in ear" protectors seem to be the normal issue with regards to H&a -

Well these are seriously good : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peltor-Sportac-Ear-Defenders-/150615859562?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item231167a16a You might find them cheaper if you do a search. My mate uses these, to my mind a bit bulky but he seems to shoot well with them http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Peltor-Optime-Push-Listen-Ear-Defenders-SNR31dB-/350484306568?pt=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item519a7e1a88 These are the same as mine and for £49.99 a real bargain. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PELTOR-TACTICAL-6S-6-S-ELECTRONIC-STEREO-EAR-DEFE -
Electronic ear defenders "HELP"
HUnter_zero replied to J Russels's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
The first bit of advice I'd give is to make sure to try before you buy. The problem with ear defenders is comfort whilst being worn. I've tried all sorts and the best so far are my Peltor Tactical 6-S. Couple of points to keep in mind. 1) Keep in mind the size, got to fit in the pocket. 2) Keep in mind that you need to mount a gun, so it's no good if the ear cups are massive. 3) Cheap is cheap for a reason, your hearing is priceless, your PPE should reflect this. One last point, "in the ear" type defenders WILL NOT PROTECT YOUR HEARING WHILST FIRING A GUN. Damage to your hearing -
Really easy. Get one empty 70cl (spirit bottles). Give them a good wash (any pub will have loads for the asking). Right with your full new bottle of gin (any brand will do), fill half the empty bottle. Put half a cup of sugar in each bottle and keep topping up with Sloes until you can fit no more. Screw the tops on and shake once a day for the first two weeks. Then leave until you can wait now longer, empty each bottle and refill one to the brim with sloe gin. Job done. John

Bye Bye Remmy Hello Swiss Arms
HUnter_zero replied to markha's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
SWP used to do it on the spot but due to cutbacks and being under pressure they don't have the time or the will anymore. I'd be surprised if NWP would do it while-you-wait, give them a call and ask. Personally speaking I think there should be an option on the FAC to enable one-for-one sales/swaps which would cut the processing time down for the FEO's and office staff. John -
Only because any rifle that is self loading (read semi-auto) or pump action falls outside section one of the firearms act, with the exception of .22 rimfire calibres. This poor draughting of the legislation means it is legal to own a .22WMR semi auto (upwards of 300 ft.lb) but it is illegal to own a .17HMR in semi auto, even though it only puts out about 200 ft.lb.

Paul, as much as I totally agree with what you are saying, one thing I would add is that you can not make a silk purse out of a sows ear no matter how hard you try. John -
digital scales v balance beam
HUnter_zero replied to zx10mike's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
To be honest there are not many people who can claim to shoot 1/4MOA all of the time, and a lot of competitive BR shooters would love to match your achievement. I have little or no chance of matching 1/4MOA every time, but the human error part is also in my opinion the greatest reason for poor grouping. Try this experiment, shoot a group at say 300 yards ( my average grouping at 300 yards with my .308 tac is 3.7" ), now drink a can of caffeine drink, shoot another group and see what happens to the grouping. Try the same experiment after eating a bar of chocolate. I have never met any rifle s -
digital scales v balance beam
HUnter_zero replied to zx10mike's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
That's rifle shooting for you .1 grains will effect the harmonics of the barrel and can open up a group. That's not to say that .1 grains will have any real effect on the trajectory but going back to my original point over beam scales, .01 grains would not have any real effect over barrel harmonics and no real effect on the trajectory, hence when you asked about human error, you don't really have much to worry about. Unless of course you wish to squeeze every last drop of "groupness" out of the load & rifle but if that's the case, powder and scales is only a very small part of produc -
digital scales v balance beam
HUnter_zero replied to zx10mike's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
The smallest calibre I have reloaded is the .223, 22.18 grains produced 3033.3 fps, 22.42 grains produced 3066.6 grains, so an increase 0f .24 grains produced an increase of 33.3 fps (presumably at muzzle as these are very old reloading notes). Which would suggest .1 grains would have increased the MV by 15.15 fps. Now, if we look at my above example of .01 grains, I suspect a 1 fps over all average increase in MV (?). I have no idea about the .17 fireball, do you have any chronograph data to compare? Hodgdon data seems to suggest that (20 grain bullet / H355) 18.5 grains will produce a M -
digital scales v balance beam
HUnter_zero replied to zx10mike's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I have owned and used both. I recently sold my DPS3 and RCBS charge master. Now I use a balance scale with a Target Master trickler and frankly it's more accurate than any digital scale I have used. Lets be honest, .01 of a grain isn't, no matter what people think going to change the final impact location of a bullet. Try pulling Gold medal match and you might be shocked. So exactly how much powder will it take to really effect the POI of a bullet? .01? .05? .1? Well I know that .1 grains will effect the harmonics of a barrel and I know that my scale will highlight a .1 grain difference. S -
John, I owned an original "T" bolt and it was one of the finest .22rf I have ever owned (produced 1965 - 1975). I still have my range book and 25 yard groups were .25", 50 yard groups .5", 100 yard groups were 1.2". All would have been shot off a bench with sand bags. I haven't written down if this was average grouping or one off groups, for some reason I have only written down three range trips and it was a very long time ago. Takes me back reading my old range books, 2.7" groups with 50 grain V-max, 23 grains of H322 out of a .223 Ruger M77 (factory standard). Back on topic, my mate recen
