Nice deer! I'm going to squeeze a stalk in before Xmas but have to talk my boss in to giving me Wednesday off Have a great Xmas buddy! John

Some of you guys might well know the chaps involved here. I know three of them. "A former chairman of the UK Association of Professional Deer Managers, Derek Stocker, from Somerset, was convicted of false representation under the 2006 Fraud Act and of poaching two deer under the 1991 Deer Act at Sudbury Magistrates’ Court on 22 September." Full report John

I own both and to be honest if you want an all round rifle for vermin and deer then it has to be the .243", if you want a dedicated deer rifle then it has to be the .308. However if I were to start over I would have but one rifle and that would be a 6.5. John

Again, it all depends up on where the gun will be used. I have farms that are 3500 acres and for a fact the land owner couldn't give a hoot what I use or when. I also have farms that are little more than 100 acres, for which I can only use the little .22rf. Back when I started out, I used to lamp the farm with a 12 bore and head lamp, nothing was ever said and I certainly never worried about the sound of the report. The shotgun is a very safe tool for lamping. On land that I lease I would use which ever would get the job done in the safest way, sound level would be no concern at all in that si

Yes, not bad at all. The fact that you can move faster and not worry about back stops is a bonus. The gun will only be worth a few pounds so it matter not about the rain, blood or mud. 30mm mounts normally fit the barrel, so you can sling an LED torch under the barrel but a head lamp is better with the shotgun. The only real issue is sound and some farmers hate the sound of the shotguns at night, would you be happy if it were your back garden someone was shooting in? I've used shotguns, airguns and rim fires for lamping, in fact I have a single barrel .410 here which I solely use for lampi

My very first shotgun was a Baikal U/O wooden stock which I purchased second hand over twenty years ago. I still have the gun and have shot god knows how many thousands of rounds, tens of thousands would be more like it. The gun will out last me for sure. John

Could I possibly trouble you for a reply to my PM, you are slowly losing a sale here buddy. John

That is bang on, and correct. You may shoot a fox with whatever calibre rifle or shotgun you wish as you will not be breaking the law BUT if you cause unnecessary suffering to the fox there exists a whole world of legislation purposely designed to make your life a living hell. John

Thank you & PM back at you. John

Is there a reason you will not answer any of my questions about this vehicle? PM & Email sent John

Also interested as per PM, could I also have some more photos? John

Shooting deer with .17hmr
HUnter_zero replied to firepower's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
All you have is hearsay, you have no substantial proof or even a shred of evidence to suggest this chap is shooting the deer with a .17HMR. What might start out as a righteous mission to stop inexcusable cruelty to deer may well end with you being in a lot of hot water and even in court. I would not call my FEO or even talk to the police at this stage. You need this chap to actually tell YOU personally or you need to find evidence of this crime. Once you have either then speak to the land owner, get his feed back, then take it one step at a time. AS the saying goes, 'the road to hell is paved -
Browning T Bolt .22 Rimfire
HUnter_zero replied to falconbob2004's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I was luck enough to own an original "T" bolt. The rifle was the best .22rf I have ever owned in terms of handling/balance and accuracy. Simply a superb rifle. Mine had a walnut stock and light weight barrel. The only reason I sold it was due to the fact that the barrel was too thin to be threaded for a moderator, so like a clod of wet mud I sold the rifle and have regretted it ever since. My mate recently purchased a T bolt from the gun auctions, I was surprised to see that Browning have changed the stock profile and that the barrels were much thicker and already cut for a moderator. Never th -
In the essence of the firearms act you would be in breach of the terms and conditions of your license but as the government and police refute big cat existence how can they prosecute you for a myth? John

Help with low impaqct 12 guage
HUnter_zero replied to cyclonebri1's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My advice would be a silenced 20 bore, shooting a light load. 20 bores will produce the same results as a 12 bore. John -
Spot on John! Two of my mates have hearing issues due to shooting and not using ear protection. One of them started shooting shotguns around the same time as me and we were both "hard men" and never used ear protection, he now has constant ringing in his ear. My other mate is 3/4 deaf which makes for interesting conversations whilst stalking and he wonders why we never get any deer when stalking together John

Yes but keep in mind this is not really a fault finding exercise, more a theoretical exploration in to what happens with different powder weights. With the internal case capacity it means QL can calculate almost specific pressure traces which means the final data of chamber pressure and muzzle velocity is more accurate. I've had all sorts of problems reloading for my mates Howa .308, very tight chamber, very small throat etc. My standard .308 ammo will not even chamber in his rifle! He likes Winny silver tips, the fire formed cases come out with neck tension. John
-
Yup, thats using a 22" barrel in all the QL calculations. If you weight the water capacity of a fire formed case in grains, I can get a more accurate data read out. John

.243, , Sierra SPBT Blitz 1515 driven by 42 grains of Hodgdon H414 with a COAL of 2.640" & a case length of 2.044" will produce a mild load with a MV of 3060 fps which is not deer legal! 42.5 grains will produce a mild load, MV of 3095 fps just deer legal. 42.8 grains, MV 3116 fps. 43 grains 3130 fps. MV is approx +/- 10% at the very most. John
-
Do you have access to a chronograph? If so compare the MV with that given in my other posts. Let me know the exact MV and I can back work QL to give me the chamber pressure and then work up a load to give you a suitable MV for deer and safe chamber pressure. Or you could fill a fire formed case with water and let me know the weight in grains of the water, that way QL is very accurate. John

Can anyone 'head shoot' rabbits with a shotgun In all my years of shotgun shooting I've never really had this problem. John
-
Yes, a shotgun is superb for all sorts of game, both running and flying! I'm having a love affair with a little .410 at the moment, in fact I'm just thinking about a quick lamping trip to the farm behind us... John

There is only ONE press and that's an RCBS rockchucker, such an investment will last ten life times. I have my eye on one but at the moment I'm using an RCBS RS2, which unfortunately also lasts ten life times, one day I'll bust it.... then it's a Rockchucker! It's funny how you never really see people asking for spare parts for RCBS presses John
