To be honest I would not stand too close to the BASC, my understanding is that they fully support a lead ban for stalking, if so a prosecution for not using soft or hollow nosed bullets would support their case. John

Which is exactly why I first emailed the tech dept at hornady, with hope they would email me back saying that the bullets are in fact classed as hollow points. I have emails from four bullet manufactures and all state the bullets are not soft or hollow nosed/points. It would be very easy for the local police to do the same. As shooters we most certainly do need clarification which would clear things up and leave us with not doubt or worry at all. John

I have yet another reply from Hornady over SST bullets and again they state the bullets are NOT soft or hollow nosed. There is only a grey area because as yet no one has had cause to bring this to court and until then it is always going to be a stumbling point, I just don't want to be the first in the dock. The facts are simple: 1) Many people use polymer tipped bullets for deer shooting. These bullets include A-max, V-Max, BT, SST. 2) The manufactures of these bullets state that the bullets are NOT soft nosed or hollow nosed. 3) As already stated the select com. has ruled for the purpose

I'll believe what the manufactures and the law states. John

Had an email back from Nosler, so this is the second major bullet manufacture I have contacted. I'm guessing these guys are way more qualified and by farmore experianced than end users to pass comment. You will remember I asked the question "In the UK the deer act states we must use a bullet that is either of soft nose construction or hollow nose construction, would you agree that the BT design of bullet fills this requirement or would you recommend I continue to use Partition gold for my deer shooting? " Nosler reply was : "The Ballistic Tip is neither a hollow point or soft no

Good luck & take your time. Apart from Roe buck next month deer season is all but gone, so this is a great time to sort out your larder and equipment. I'll be repainting mine next month and checking the pully and gambrel are all okay. I'll deforst my upright freezer and check my butchers block is still solid, repair as needed. The mincer and saw will have a once over. Then you have your high seats to replace or repair if needed. This year I will be installing deer feeders for the first time, so I have that to sort out. The roll on the summer months when I can get up the out door range and

As long as you have "deer" shooting / stalking on your FAC you are legal to shoot deer. Managing deer is a little complicated and to be honest before you can learn to make a cull plan you will need to gain a few years experiance. One or ten deer will not wipe numbers out, it all depends on why you are shooting the deer. For example crop protection or income or even for food. You need to practice with that rifle, make sure you can hit the mark! Practice, Practice and practice a bit more. The main problem is bdealing with the beast afterwards, you really need to be shown how to do this and how

There is no simple answer to this question. You say that you have an FAC, with deer as a condition and that you have land to stalk deer on. I have to admit my mind is boggled to have exactly you have done all this with out knowing exactly what your doing, not an easy task if you have many years of experience, so I tip my hat to you. Shooting a deer is the easy part, most any half witted rifle shooter can hit a 6" kill zone at 100 yards. The hard part is choosing the right deer to shoot and dealing with the deer after you have shot it. Choosing the right deer is complicated and based on your

If you dissect a FMJ bullet you will find (or at least I have found) an area at the tip which has no lead, does this make a FMJ bullet hollow nosed and legal for deer shooting? Based on your opinion that a bullet capped with a polymer tip that covers a hollow is in fact both soft nosed and hollow nosed, then surely you must agree that a bullet encapsulated with copper with a hollow at the tip must be a hollow nosed bullet with copper covering the hollow section? As an aside, I have contacted Nosler and ask the question " In the UK the deer act states we must use a bullet that is either of sof

Then for the love of god, show me ANY manufactures data that suggests, describes, markets, advertises or remotely hints that polymer tipped bullets are either SOFT NOSE OR HOLLOW NOSE. I can show evidence that the manufacture does NOT describe these type of bullets as either. John
-
So your lack of any REAL evidence to support your claims gives way to personal insults, why does this not surprise me. John

My (and others) worry is simple. The Deer act defines or describes bullets that can be used for shooting deer as either soft nose or hollow nose. If there was a legal ruling or a manufacture that would state polymer tipped bullets are soft nose or hollow nosed bullets, there would be no issues at all and in fact would make my life for one much easier as I could use bullets in a length that would be more suited to my needs and the bullets would be much easier to purchase. The important thing to understand is that the firearms act to which your certificate relates can not over rule the Deer act.

I quote but one thing. we have showed four missiles (two of each kind) to experienced riflemen, senior police officers and firearms administration staff. No-one has yet correctly identified which missiles are prohibited and which are uncontrolled and the firearms act has little to do with the deer act. The above is exactly what I am doing my level best to point out, and that is that polymer tipped bullets have not been defined accurately in legislation, which the above proves. Yes, we know that certain polymer tipped bullets are designed for deer shooting and may even be better than

Again, how long have you owned firearms and how long have you stalked deer? You have not stated any factual information, just your inadequate opinion. I will not waste time debating with a tub thumper. John

I am very much aware of the Scottish laws. Many people claim to use A-max bullets which are match bullets. Just because people use polymer tipped bullets for deer stalking does not mean it is legal to do so and until a court has ruled that polymer tipped bullets are legal for deer control it is always going to be a very grey area. The manufactures of such bullets will openly admit that the bullets are neither soft or hollow nosed, the opinions of people such as Mr_logic are of little use when you are stuck defending your actions in a court. The law is an ass at the best of times, what is need

1) It proves that the manufacture defines their produce as neither a soft or hollow nosed bullet. 2) Good so you agree with Hornady then. 3) From Wikipedia : A hollow point is an expanding bullet that has a pit or hollowed out shape in its tip, generally intended to cause the bullet to expand upon entering a target in order to decrease penetration and disrupt more tissue as it travels through the target. They are also used to control penetration, such as in situations where over penetration could cause collateral damage (such as on an airplane). Jacketed hollow points (JHPs) or plated ho

Actually, even the manufactures of these bullets openly admit that the bullets are neither soft nose or hollow nose, do you REALLY know better than the manufacturers? Now let us state facts here and not opinions. Deer act 1991 states : SCHEDULE 2 Prohibited firearms and ammunition Firearms 1 Any smooth-bore gun. . 2 Any rifle having a calibre of less than .240 inches or a muzzle energy of less than 2,305 joules (1,700 foot pounds). . 3 Any air gun, air rifle or air pistol. . Ammunition 4 Any cartridge for use in a smooth-bore gun. . 5 Any bullet for use i

By definition polymer tip bullets are illegal for shooting deer in the UK, sooner or later it will end up in court. BT's and variants like V-max are neither soft nose or hollow nosed bullets as required by the Deer act. John

If the guys Jills are coming n to season, mine is, then he will have to do something. 1) Take your jill to the vet and get a jill jab £18 2) Let you jill mate but there is no money in ferret breeding and there are far too many kits in the world as it is. 3)Take your jills to be sterilized 4) Take your hob to be vasectomized £40 Since my vasectomized hob died, I take my jills for the jill jab, however there are many reason why this just isn't fair. Above all, please do some research on ferret ownership, ferrets are like little people with their own personalities and needs. John

DO YOU NOT KNOW ANYTHING? Why on earth are you asking for ferreting permission when you can not even tell a Jill from a Hob? How bloody annoying is that. John

Stupid question from a Yank ...

It's a little bit like a gun show but centers around "game shooting" & "game fishing". Things like trade stands, events (dog displays, decoying, ferreting etc etc). John -
IMHO it used to be much better than it is now. Used to have plenty of bargains and used to be a cheapish and very enjoyable day out. Seems highly commercialised these days with little in the way of cheap bargains, or I might be getting tighter. Chris Greens show is always top notch. I think the admission is cheaper this year, I am sure we paid £12.50 each a few years back, but even at £9 it's 18 sobs for me & the Mrs. Food & drink is extortionate there but much the same at all fares. A few years back I would have given it 9/10, didn't bother last year and the year before 5/10. From a t

Well, just encase this happens to someone else's ferret... The cat laxatives made not difference, poor chap now has blood in his stools Another trip to the vets and another £25, this time an injection and oral meds. The vet suspects that he has inflammation of his bowels, if not a tumour and if this don't work I think a .410 but don't tell Mrs H_Z!! John

At £60 + for a first edition the books are not cheap! I have a signed first edition here and an unsigned edition, but I used to collect shooting books and a lot of first editions and a few signed editions from various writers. John
