  1. Just a quick bump. We can not locate the owners. Mrs H_Z called the RSPCA, local vets, Police and Council animal shelter but no body has reported the loss of a ferret I'm shocked as the poor war weasel is in cracking conditions, being washed in tea tree oil and having all claws clipped. Somebody out there must be worried about their ferret. If anyone has any ideas where to try and contact please can you let me know. John
  2. A ferret was passed to us tonight (19-04-10) which was found in the Gwent road area of Eley in Cardiff. The ferret has been very well looked after and is in top condition. The ferret is safe, warm and dry. If there are any members from Eley, please can you ask around and PM me with the details of the ferret lost. Sex / Approx age / Colour . Would be nice if the mods could put this post as a sticky because whoever has lost the ferret will be well and truly gutted. John
  3. I am more than sure you know that I know exactly what is written in law. To achieve 1700 ft-lb muzzle energy, you will have to achieve a given muzzle velocity but here you go again, the semantics of a situation. My comment may well have been flippant whilst replying to "it isn't velocity that kills your quarry...its the impact energy and accuracy". With all your experience, I am sure if or when you start to work a load up for deer, you calculate what muzzle velocity will be required for your chosen bullet to achieve the 1700 ft-lb. In essence, the law may not state the muzzle velocity becau
  4. 1700 ft-lb requires a given muzzel velocity / bullet weight
  5. At the end of the day, it matters not because the LAW states what MUZZLE VELOCITY is required. John
  6. The topic header suggests that the OP requires a "light load". I think the OP may well be surprised that there are only a few possibilities out there. Best I have come up with, which is a REAL load and not just out of a reloading manual is a 75 grain bullet for dual purpose situations, however I am having major issues sourcing a SP for deer. V-max is commonly available. Now I know that some people use V-max on deer, I don't because I do not believe that the bullets have sufficient ability to penetrate through bone. You can not in REAL terms drive a 58 grain bullet to legal deer velocity in
  7. They may have revamped the rifle since the Mk2 I purchased, if you like them buy one. John
  8. YES leave them in the shop!! Trust me when I say that the build quality is very poor. The button rifling does the job down range but boy the quality is poor. I mailed ordered one from Uttings, when one able to do such things and regretted it from day one. The trigger was so poor, a cap gun trigger was better. In fairness to savage, I called them and they sent me a new unit from the states in two days! Still, stay well clear. John
  9. You can 'cure' the tail by filling it with Salt Peter. Plain old salt will do at a push by is not as good as potassium nitrate (salt peter). You can also use sulphuric acid from car batteries but I have never do it that way before and don't know much about it. I was also told that silica gel (the stuff in anti-corrosion bags) will also cure fox & squirrel tails, not tried it. If you do a google search, there are a few companies that will supply Taxidermy chemicals, which of course is the best of the lot. Also see below, extracted from a book out of copy right. 10. Duno, but the guy in this video seems to be shooting scary close to the road. http://www.decoying.co.uk/?page=show-item&item=709 John
  11. You of course just buy a .243" of a suitable twist rate and stick to 100 grain bullets. The issues is you want laser flat trajectory and the legal ability to shoot deer. A difficult request. The .243" can do both better than any .22cf but not at the same time, so you have to make slight compromises and use a bullet weight that will give you a good trajectory out to about 250 yards but also enable you to take small deer. I'm experimenting with 75 grain V-max, just to see the results, then plan to swap to 75 SP with better ballistics for small deer. The result should be an ideal small deer roun
  12. My 1 in 12 pro-hunter will give one hole groups with 58 grain V-max, 100 grain SP's will produce 1 to 2" groups. I had a range day today, testing my .243" in 75 grain V-max flavour which is a bit of a coincidence really, hence exact velocities. In fact: 43 grains of H380 = 3158.75 fps 43.5 grains of H380 = 3210 fps 44 grains of H380 = 3256.25 fps 44.5 grains of H380 = 3336.6 fps John
  13. Tom, you have two problems here. First is the twist rate of the .243" barrel, to duplicate .222 trajectories you will need a 1in12 twist to handle 58 grain V-max. Then you have to be 'deer' legal, 1700ft-lb muzzle energy. This can only really be achieved using 75 grain bullets, and there is a third problem there are not 75 grain bullet designed specifically for deer shooting, so and NOT that I recommend this, the only option would be to use a 75 grain V-max. This can be driven to deer legal velocities (3195 fps) but isn't ideal on anything bigger than Roe, and IMHO not good for Muntjac. A 75 g
  14. Don't think money matters, the Animal welfare act and all. However, a vet will charge around £20 to look at the ferret and then charge for med's on top. I have never had a vet charge more than £30 for a simple problem. Ferrets on the whole are healthy animals, has the ferret and abnormal lumps along it's stomach? You need to have a good feel. Sounds like it could be one of a few things, a fur ball could very well be one of them. What do the ferrets dropping look like? Does the ferret vomit after eating? Ferrets are funny old creatures and don't really show any signs of pain, not until
  15. An interesting thread. I guess 'killing' is a very personal thing and many factors influence the way in which a person justifies to their own mind why they do it. I'm not sure there is a 'sportsman' alive that hasn't at some point just stopped and taken a long gaze at his fresh kill and secretly asked 'why did I do that'. I spent more time in the woods and fields as a kid than I did in school, always had an airgun with me and was always on some adventure somewhere. I can not say that I thought about 'killing' in the same way I do now, back then I guess shooting rabbits, or pigeons was ju
  16. Simple, .308 for over all cheapness. John
  17. So is this car fuk or not? John
  18. You, you, you devil.... I was proper jealous too. John
  19. Now that's one cool reloading bench! I'm not going to post a pic of my ex-pc work station reloading bench now John
  20. The answer to your question is YES. However there are a couple of issues you also need to understand. If this is the only area of "passed" land you can shoot over, then you face losing your FAC if your licensing department found out that the land no longer needs vermin control to be carried out. You will have been granted an FAC to carry out a specific purpose, for example rabbits or vermin control. If you can no longer carry this out, you no longer need an FAC. It's that simple. The bottom lines: The police do not check that the land is still currently suitable for firearm use unless they
  21. To be honest it's a bit of a sore subject for me. A few years back I was offered a great chance of some very fine wildfowling just off the foreshore, being law-abiding I promptly took a trip to Keens and enquired about non-toxic shot, if that makes any real sense. Everything the shot hits, dies so it isn't that non-toxic , £38 I was told, 'oh, my mistake, I only want box of 25 please'. Sorry we only sell them in boxes of ten! £3. per bang. That was the end of my wildfowling days. To my mind, there is so much crap along the foreshore lead is the last of peoples worries. Hardly a day
  22. You really are stuck up yourself. Fact is you can not defend the actions of the lead ban, that's the FACT. Was there not a consultation period, which for some of the part was dependant on evidence from the BASC? Is it not a FACT that there was so much more evidence that could have been put forward but was held back, why was that? FOR EXAMPLE: How many geese migrate from green land? How many geese have lead contamination from green land that come to our shores? FACT: What is the point in a lead ban for the UK, if the birds are already contaminated with lead? FACT: A Green-lander
  23. Picture, Mrs H_Z and I on a rocky beach in deepest South Wales, this was the day I decided to take up sea fishing, about six months in to our courtship. MY very first cast, and the lead weight flew well in to the tens of yards, rag worm and a little bread attached to my slightly over sized hook. I need a big hook because it was cod fishing season, and as cod live in the sea I was bound to catch one of these beauties for our tea! Mrs H_Z managed to get to twenty whole minutes before complaining she was cold and that the chip shop was only half a mile down the road. Nope, I was having nothing
