i went ferreting this morning at a big old yard my friend has bought to store his plant, i took three ferrets and both my beddy/whippets,when i arrived i was greeted by a big ,lean, lab that belonged to someone else who was doing some work for my mate.the lab followed us round all morning and at first i was holding the collar of the lab so that he did,nt bite the ferrets or the other way round ! eventually i had to let him get on with it and he was good as gold ! he ended up putting his snout down the holes (not really what i wanted) and taking a great interest in both the rabbits and the ferr

me the dogs and the ferrets enjoyed a couple of hours ferreting this morning even though it rained and hailed here in sunny suffolk ! the dogs and ferrets all worked well and i,v got rabbit pie ! on the way back to the van my 9 year old beddy/whippet grabbed hold of a partridge , she has never done this before although she has flushed many phesants anyway she did,nt hold on to it for long and away it flew ! this made me think about "bird dogs " anyone out there own a dog that catches birds on a regular basis , if so what cross ?

after finishing late all week i made sure i was finished early enough today so that i could get out and about for a walk round for an hour with the dogs and the gun. here in silly suffolk a nice fresh wind made it an absolutley pleasure just to walk through the countryside, the fact that i missed a high pigeon with the wind up it,s backside did,nt matter at all i was just happy to be there but when the dogs put up a cock bird out of some light cover i swung the "twenty" through the bird i was already smileing, both barrels later the bird flew on strongly ! i just know that when i close my eyes

thanks people for your replys and thoughts about this cross i agree with bird when he questions why this cross is not more popular, i half expected someone to reply and explain why more people don,t work this cross ! along the same lines , another friend who knows more about working dogs than i do often tells the story (after a few tinnys!) of his uncles springer who rather than bolt rabbits for the running dogs caught them them in the cover instead ! my friend always says a spaniel cross would make a great rabbit dog . by the way i work a 10 year old beddie/whippet and her two year old daught

had a long chat yesterday with a chap who had bred a litter of lab/springer xlab pups he had kept back a dog which is now fully grown and looks like a small lab.he says the dog hunts well and had caught pheasents and rabbits in cover. he also says that the bitches out of the same litter are smaller and leaner and work very well also. this had me thinking that with a splash of greyhound/whippet these could be nice alround dogs. anybody out there work anything simular ?

cheers bunnykiller ! i,m sure i,m having the same problem with my pellets passing through the rabbits killing zone so that they jump and spin in the air then run back into cover. i,m shooting rabbits at different ranges from about 20 yards upwards .i,ll try the magnum pellets and let you know how i get on.cheers again!!
-
