Looks like you had a good day mate! Well done! :thumbs-up:

Definately feed them raw meat mate. Mine get mostly rabbit supplemented with quail, pheasant, the occasional day old chick, or just about anything I catch. At this time of year you will be ok to leave a rabbit for a few days without it rotting provided it has been gutted. What I do once I've defrosted a rabbit is cut bits off it to feed them seperately and leave the rest in the shed. With my 2 ferrets a rabbit usually lasts 2-3 days this way depending on its size. Your ferrets may eat more or less but you will soon know how much to give them. Cheers

I was out both days this weekend on brand new permissions. On saturday I took my hob out to a farm and did 4 warrens with a total of 5 rabbits in the bag. I was just out a fewof hours and barely scratched the surface on this permission! On sunday I took out my young jill out to some stables I just gained permission on for a quick morning's work. Did one warren in the middle of a field, which was taped up to stop the horses getting to it. About 16 or 17 holes but I thought I would give it a shot. The jill worked Brilliantly and it was 6 rabbits from the one warren, my new personal

Looks like a great day mate, plenty of good pictures! I always forget to take the camera with me and on occasions I've taken it I get too caught up in ferreting to take pics! Most of my permission seems to be hedgerows like that, some much more tricky hedges too! Its a b**ch when they kill in the middle of all the roots aint it! Cheers

Sounds like you had a good day mate, may those rabbits be the first of many Glad to hear your ferrets enjoyed shifting those bunnies!

Talking to a mate of mine in the pub on saturday he was telling me that he was always told that meat tastes better if it has been under stress before it was killed. For instance if you shoot a rabbit while its grazing the meat does not taste as good as if it has been chased by a dog. He said it was something to do with the animals blood pumping more through the body. Anyone got any thoughts on this, cant say i would notice any difference between ferreted rabbits and shot rabbits myself! Is it just an old wifes tale or is there some truth in there somewhere?

Have a look here mate, also click on "paunching" to see how to gut them: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ferreter/working5.htm Cheers

2 new Jills tried out this morning(advice needed)
gibby replied to guinness's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
First of all you will need to make sure the collar is tighter to stop that happening again but you will soon get used to how tight it needs to be. I wouldnt be too worried about them dragging the nets a lot of ferrets get caught up at first but will soon learn how to pass through them. It is possible that there were no rabbits at home, but if you heard a rumbling then the rabbit might have bolted to another level of the warren rather than bolt out. Because your jills are inexperienced they may not have found the other levels. Personally I wouldnt look too much into it, give them another -
Nice ferreting mate. Its great when it all goes to plan!

Ditch, that is genius mate :thumbs-up: ! Wish one of those cats in the picture was the one that stole a dead rabbit out of my shed the other day when I left it open for just 2 mins!

Took my 4 month old jill out for the first time on my day off today. First warren I tried was a shallow one with about 8-9 holes, but most of them are in an enclosed area of a couple of square yards, with only a couple of holes coming away from the main cluster. The ferret went down the hole almost straight away, as you would expect a ferret, and before long she was coming out of holes and going back down others, and didnt take long to get used to the nets. Unfortunately no rabbits from there but thats just how it goes! Next warren was a few minutes walk away and was about 6 or 7 hol

Thanks for the advice. I've never entered a ferret without a collar before now and I will continue with that rule! Cheers

Well done mate, hopefully your jill will keep em comin! And that first pic is a cracker!

Thanks for the advice. That link doesnt seem to work though? Cheers anyway I'll try and get another collar.

It wasnt me that lost them. It was my stepdad 2 years ago and it was his ferret. And the warren went deeper than 8ft which he wasnt expecting, on a permission he wasnt familiar with. Nothing to do with me I wasnt there and as far as I know he made every attempt in the following days to find his ferret. Edited to add that I know losing ferrets is to be avoided at all costs, which is the main reason for me starting this thread in the first place. Hopefully someone will be able to help me out with my question?

You know what they say, "a bad worker always blames his tools". So in this instance it just goes to show that its the person holding the air rifle that really counts! Nice going mate Still, I much prefer shooting with my stepdad's Weirach (which is on permanent loan to me at the moment)...!

I have some rabbits to clear from a warren or 2 where I plan to use my 2 ferrets in conjunction with some purse nets and a shotgun. Only problem is that I only have 1 locator collar oweing to the other 1 being lost. (on a ferret unfortunately ) Would it be feasable to use the jill without a collar, and the hob with a collar to hopefully help me track down the jill if she lays up? If it was a small to medium warren I wouldn't worry too much but these warrens are pretty big and complicated! This is a job for a fortnight to 3 weeks time when my Jill has more experience. Been trying

Not trying to be funny mate or discredit you in any way but if you look at the above pic the first 3 bunnies from the left on the far away row look exactly the same as the 5th, 6th, and 7th bunnies on the near row... Like I say though just an observation

I've fed pheasant before with no noticeable problems. I find that they particularly like the neck meat! I also give my ferrets fresh quail occasionaly too, I think its a similar "richness". (Edited to add that the quail I feed is bred in captivity as hawk food.)

Afraid not, This woman used one of her hobs as a stud for her friend who wanted a litter and took one of the kits for the favour. However she has around 15 adult ferrets, all rescue or similar arrangement, so she said I could have the kit since i guaranteed it a good working home. We came to a good agreement that if I breed from the jill she could have pick of the litter. So unfortunately she has no more kits this year and Im pretty sure her friend has no more too. Cheers PS this lady even has a pure 100% polecat that used to belong to a nature reserve, and its unbelievably tam

Got a new jill kit the other day, managed to get her off a woman who lives about 20 miles away who keeps lots of ferrets as pets. My kit was given to her by a friend of hers but when I called her and explained my situation she was happy to give the kit to a good working home. Now this kit has never eaten rabbit and her parents were kept as pets only, but I decided to give her a shot. Meet "Milly", between 3 and 4 months (not quite sure) albino jill. She has a great temperament but is still a little too young and playful to work! This is my albino hob "Rocky" about 4-5 months, c

Went out this afternoon as I had the day off work today for a job interview earlier. Went to a bit of permission not far from me and did a warren I havent done yet, and for good bloody reasons I now realise! Netted up a few holes next to a big bush, couldnt see any under the bush. There was a couple of big sheets of tin lying next to the bush too though... Put my hob down, and it wasnt long before i heard a rumbling under my feet, a matter of seconds actually. Next thing i hear the tin clattering about, and yep you've guessed it, rabbit slips out from under the tin and bolts away!

Gave them a ring they've no kits left. They put me in touch with someone else and he doesn't know of any either! I realise I've left it a bit late but surely someone must have 1? Thanks for all the help so far! Gibby
