I rough shoot and decoy with old 12g Baikal O/Us and love em to bits. Now the wife is showing an interest and considering her hit rate of 24/26 clays on her first time out I reckon she'll be pretty good. So I am looking for a decent 20g Baikal O/U for her. Doesn't have to be ejector but single trigger would be preferable. Don't want to spend a fortune on her first gun but want something half decent. I have cash waiting and can arrange for delivery to my local gun shop. I might entertain something similar from another maker. thanks folks Mat

I've got a 1st Cross beddy whippet. She stands at 18" @ 18months. Small fields round here so she's a wicked little lamping dog. Great at ferreting too. She marks well but tends to grab the nets when the bunnies hit them and she isn't too keen on letting go. Big rabbits are hard work for her cos she's so titchy but she'll bring them down and wait for me to come to her cos she can't carry them. Would never work her on anything else tho, she's not big enough. I also have a 10 month old Beddy/whippet x champion coursing whippet. Smooth as silk, 21" at the moment, beautiful looking dog but

I've got it on ALL my permission in Cornwall, looks like it's going to take a firm hold this year. We'll be ferreting tomorrow as its cooled down a lot. We'll just be doing a mixi cull, all healthy bunnies get to go free for a change. We need some healthy bunnies for this coming lamping season. Cheers Mat

I pick my 1st x whip/bed up on Saturday. She will be blue and broken coated when she grows up. There will always be some variation depending on the parentage. If you have a liver dam and a liver sire you'll likely get some liver pups. It also kind of boils down to which was mated to which, the pups parents and a bit of luck. There are no guarentees that the pup will be blue or broken caoted. Cheers Mat

Very nice! How do you go about smoking a bunny?? And no stupid replies involving Rizla/centerfire/shotguns please Cheers Mat

I'm not marrried. I just moved in with my girlfriend after 5 years on the proviso that I get to have a dog. The 1st Cross Bedlington/Whippet will be ready to pick up mid August Ha Ha Ha Ha I'm off to my permission now to have a scout about for some ferreting spots for this winter and day dream about my new pup chasing the beam. Cheers Mat

I have the same scope and never move the zoom off of 5. Once it's zeroed 5x seems to be perfect for everything over 15yds up to 35yds. I tend not to shoot over bigger distances. Cheers Mat

The weather has broken a bit here in Cornwall so I might pop out for a couple of hours with my friends lurcher a lamp and the Supersport. It's always good hunting after a days rain. Cheers Mat

Aaron You are cruel and you need a haircut Heh heh You have a wise head on your shoulders for a youngster. Do what you like to do and do it well and you will get more respect from the people who matter. Ignore those who mock you. They don't understand why you do what you do and probably never will. Let them eat their nutritionless twizzlers and be done with it. You could try to avoid the confrontation in the first place by simply not telling people what you do or what's in your sandwiches you goon??? I still cop it occasionally from lost walkers and such. Even on m

Another thumbs up for the RWS Superdomes Cheers Mat

Could be but most likely not. Black rabbits are wild rabbits simple as that. It's very rare to find a domestic breeding with a wild. That's a slightly blunter and shorter post than usual Cheers Mat

I went out last night about 9 oclock with my friends lurcher and the gun. It was just a reccy for a weekends ferreting plus give the dog a run and maybe take a couple of shots. There is a black rabbit on my permission that I normally leave alone but last night was different. He was squatting in the middle of the field which is unusual as he always hangs out near the hedge. I couldn't help but slip the dog for a chase. I kind of hoped the blackie would wake up and run before the dog got it. No chance! The dog saw the rabbit and after a pretty good run she picked him up and brought

With the right setup pretty much anyone should be able to make the long shots after a good few hundred practice shots. If you have one of those cheap chinese guns or even a decent gun with a crap scope even the best of us would struggle to make the shot. I can make long shots with the supersport if I need to but there is always the problem of external factors that will determine the pellets flight path. The effect of wind, nerves and snatchy fingers and whatever else are going to be amplified the further away your quarry is. It takes time to become 'in tune' with your gun so that you subco

It happens sometimes and there is nothing you can do about it. At least you had the nouse and respect for the animal to go and find it and do the necessary. Whenever I arrive at my permission I always pop a target up against a tree or something and take 10 or so shots just to make sure that the scope hasn't got knocked out of true or something. If I hit 10/10 in a 1/2inch group at 20yds I'll then go looking for rabbits. If I can't hit 10/10 I'll shoot another bunch until I have got my eye in. Adrenaline (buck fever) plays a big part in screwing up your accuracy. Sure you can hit a

Cheers mate I've only been on here for a couple of days and I only came here in the first place to look for a dog but I'm finding myself drawn to posting for the benefit of inexperienced hunters and the animals they point guns at. Appreciate your kind comment Cheers Mat

Get yourself a flask of tea and a pack of sandwiches and a magazine. Hole yourself up in the bushes and sit tight till they come out. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. If you can't be sure of your long shots then you will need to learn to be patient which, as far as I am concerned, is one of the more important field skills you will need to aquire. I have a spooky field that's boiling with rabbits but I can only get 2 or 3 at best in one sitting. Quite often I will return home empty handed but remember there's nothing better than a bit of fresh air and a skulk round the countrysid

Always shoot to the distance where your skill level will allow you to get a clean kill most of the time. I say most of the time because unfortunately you will not always make a fatal shot. I have been shooting rabbits with an airgun for quite some time and prefer to stalk to 25yds or sit in a hedge till they walk past. Last night I went out and pulled the trigger on a 3/4 grown doe at only 15yds. It was sat stock still and side on so should have been an easy shot. It was a bit gusty and unfortunately for the rabbit I put the pellet through its shoulder/neck. I ended up ass deep in brambl

Both are very nice looking dogs, well done! It's got to be the bedxwhippet for me. The other way round looks too much bedlington for my taste. I like the finer features of the bedxwhip. Thanks for posting the pictures, it's definately helped me narrow down my search. Where are you based by the way and is there anything in the pipeline so to speak?? Thanks for your help Cheers Mat

Lets have a new show us your kit and kills topic

You are damn right Catcher! The supersport is a very good gun for the money. You just have to be able to use it properly to get the best out of it. £250 will set you up with the gun, scope, bag and enough pellets to calm the bunny population for years. It's accurate and powerful and heavy and needs little to no maintenance. I'm only a small lad but I like a heavier gun especially as it's ALWAYS windy on my permission. Strikes me that by the time you've strapped a laser guidance system and a torch and a bipod and silencer and camo to your lightweight you'll end up with a heavier gun than -

You guys have some nice bits of kit there. I have a BSA Supersport 12lb fitted with a 3-9x40 SMK scope. It's very basic but has done me well for a good time now. It's accurate and powerful enough for short range/stealth bunnies. I tend not to shoot over about 30-35yds anyways. Basic but VERY functional. I don't have all the fancy guns and gear but then I don't think I need it. I can stand/sit/prone/whatever and hit a 1.5" kill zone at 30yds all day so I can't justify spending big bucks on little guns. I'll try and get some piccys up for you if tonights permission is fruitf -
PASTIE is it bedxwhip or whipxbed, your after there's a difference, we breed both and have never had a prob, regards 'stuborn' crackin' little dogs, and a good startin' point for the future, make sure you 'do your homework' before you make your choice, and be prepared to travel, a good breeder will take into account, the distance you travel, and reflect it in the price! Ah well, now you've got me. What is the difference??? I want a dog thats going to have a good family temperament but can work when needed. If the difference is only appearance then it's got to be small, b

Cheers folks I agree with you Storm Chaser, they can be headstrong. But, saying that, they aren't scared of the dark, snapping twigs or paper bags. Persistance in training will result a in a succesful worker, a great companion for the hunter and as a family pet as I'm sure you will agree. Cheers Mat

Hi and thanks for the welcome. I live in Hayle which as you will know is about 5 miles from St Ives. Cheers Mat

Hi folks I have been involved with field sports for quite some time and thought I'd join up. The main reason I'm here is because I am looking for a new dog. I kind of hope that there are reputable, caring breeders in my area that could help me out. I live in South West Cornwall and have a lot of permission to shoot, ferret and course. I am looking for a Bedlington/Whippet pup. I'm not so concerned about sex but I want a little one. The dog is mostly needed as a hunting companion/pet that can work when I want it to. Looking forward to meeting you all in the forums although I'm not
