We have used one called Durateston for years without any side effects on the lurchers and greyhounds. They must have a first season though. Pet dog vets dont agree with doing this, generally, so find a greyhound vet. The bitches are jabbed every 28 days which can be a nuisance.Jeff S's vet gave his bitch the pet jab called Delvesteron, which I wont use, and my greyhound vet reckons can have side effects. including increase in fatty tissue, not what you want in a running dog. If you can manage without its probably the better way to go but if not there are decent products out there

Shows should be FUN The 'show mad people' just make themselves look ridiculous with their vehicles and trailers bulging with dogs so they have an entrant for every class (oh please ) and if the misfortunate mutt dosent make it in the show ring, up for sale they go But, like it or not, these people put ££££££ into the kitty to help clubs, charities, hunts etc) Good true working dogs, lurcher of terrier, will always be there, because working dogmen and women will make sure of that

Good luck with a tough decision, hope it works out :thumbs-up:

Sounds like tendon damage. Rest her well, seasons about over now anyway. Then lead work on roads for a while, slowly increasing to running. Unlikely toes will knuckle up again, but you can strenghthen the foot enough to continue working her. Had one years ago, flat front foot due to tendon damage and she continued to work. Good luck

Followed hounds on foot (wagging school mostly) as a child, grew up, moved to a town but still had terriers. Got running dogs and got well addicted to them, husband had a sharp learning curve and did brilliant, but wouldn't go near the horse! He now does more than me, but still enjoying it 35 years later. No doubt we'll still be working dogs and ferrets when we get the pension

My old Sal/Grey/Col/Grey bitch had right front outside toe done when she was 2 years old, worked a treat. Shes now 11 years old and its the only front toe that looks normal

Having judged occasionally in the past, I have never marked a dog down for having been castrated. IMO a dog/bitch should be assessd for working capability, and castration or speying dosent lessen work ability. It COULD be viewed as responsible dog ownership given that the rescue centres are full of lurchers. Monorchids should be marked down, it is a fault, though one did particularly well in the shows last year. But thats shows for you

Not wild life,But..........

Ooops Saw something similar few years ago on local beach when out with dogs. These 1st prize nutters were roaring up and down the beach in 4 X 4s, scaring the tourists, when one went in a deep soft patch on the waterline and sank up to the axles I sat and watched the antics for awhile, in stitches. Its probably still there - I do hope so -
Years ago we used to get pork scraps and trotters for nothing off a local butcher, the dogs did well on it with no ill effect. Wish we could still get it!

Ihave 2 Saluki bred bitches who have been together 9 years, and never a cross word. The Bedlington cross bitches are in single kennels, bit more feisty. Would never keep 3 together, as the saying Moorman 1 quoted I believe correct. But it does depend a bit on the temperament of the dogs.

Check out more shows. Its not always the longdog that wins. Its down to the judge on the day, hopefully doing a fair job, although personal preference may come into it. Its a beauty competition anyway. Next point - not its not wrong to enter them in the racing, a good many owners enter both and there again there are some who only enter the racing and go home before the showing starts. And I agree looks are unimportant if the dog works well for you but its nice to do both, specially in the summer when theres not much else on.

We owned a first cross Irish Terrier / Whippet many years ago. She was a nowt nor something pup so - big mistake - had her speyed. She turned into a belting little worker, lamping, bushing, could take hares - it was legal then - and had a great nose. Never worked her with ferrets as we didn't keep them at the time. She stood 19 inches and was black rough coated. Now the 'plastic hunter' bit - she won the occasional rossette at a show, not pretty enough, but did win simulated coursing stuff, and obedience competitions on the rare occasion I entered. A great little dog who was still in full work

Good for you Baldie. I lost my old lurcher bitch this year with same thing. Decided not to have surgery to remove tumours as the old girl was 15 with a dodgy ticker when diagnosed and she may not have survived the operation. Put her on medication, Metacam, which has recently been found to have some relevance in treating mammary tumours, heart pills etc. cost a fortune but quality of life was very good, when she started going downhill, at 16 years had her put to sleep. She was worth every penny.

As you will no doubt have observed, several dogs backed off or were difficult with the judge on Sunday, for no apparent reason. I cant answer for the judge and wouldn't presume to, second chances, and sometimes third chances, are often given on the day to some dogs. This is common practice at most shows and rightfully so. As far as members classes go, are you suggesting I should only show in these because of past judging jobs, if so I might as well join a knitting circle for the summer months instead of having what should be a nice day out with friends and like minded people, without the snipi

In reply to whippetlady, having shown lurchers for 30 years I dont ever recall classess for judges to judge the judges! Secondly, the dog in question was NOT in distress. She has NEVER behaved in that way before'thrashing around', as you put it. I dont know the reason, but she is fit and well and bouncing today as yesterday. All credit must go to the judge for persevering and eventually getting round the dog and giving her a second chance. She took first place because in the judges opinion she was the best in the class, despite her behaviour, no more and no less . As to being a well known NLRC
