  1. i wouldnt worry to much this is quite common as the dog is still quite young and the bitch will back down for now but there will come a time were she wont and she will put the pup in her place dont try to seperate them let them get on with it this leads to a pecking order were the pup will be at the bottom.
  2. out today only got five but a good day had by all the black border dog got its first solo rat and it was quite a big one ,the lurcher got two and two by the whippet bit strange being out ratting whithout my border willow to help with the marking so having to make do with the lurcher at the moment good job she loves ratting, anyway here are some piccies.
  3. strange 132 looks and no replies anyway all that matters to me is that my dog does what i want it to do not what other people expect ,the dog looks a little cracker if it does what you want then thats all that matters good piccies.
  4. laguna/nimrodel lines are whippets very gamey dogs with stamina and maybe a bit headstrong, preffered quarry without doubt bunnies but will take other ie rats squirrels(grey) and some say the bigger dogs will tackle fox aswell there are some guys on here who are very much into the whippets ie pennymeadow they will also give any info required
  5. as said depends what you are using the dog for if its bunnies ,ratting mooching out with gun then 21-23 whithwhippet in it then you cant go wrong as said they are quicker of the mark and more nimble and turning is very good on these small dogs my lurcher is wheaton whippet beddie 21 inches and does just fine plus she can jump the ditches were i have permission these ditches are 10 ft across very handy for rats and such she is quicker than the terriers and over the other side before the dogs have swam across, all i can say is she suits me but horses for courses as said its a hard choice but big
  6. i bet the grin on your face was unbelievable you worry about what he is going to say, anyway one of my hunting colleagues had collie/grey/whippet a few yrs ago what broke its leg at the time he took it to the vet that done the dogs for the waterloo cup it was out for 8 mths its last 3mths were just walking it on tarmac with the walks getting longer and longer to build the muscle back up anyway the dog made a great recovery and went on to have a very distinguished career before being put to sleep at 16 it can be done with the right treatment and the right owner, all credit to you, small steps mat
  7. god loves a tryer so they say good luck and keep us posted.
  8. nice looking dog stabs looks ideal for that sort of work has it got beardie in it.
  9. ferreting and ratting no probs they are well suited to this type of work however they do take longer to bring on than most terriers ie 18-24 months in some cases, they will take rats at 10-12 mths old but not all will so patience is the key with these dogs.now as for shooting what are you looking for a little dog to find quarry you have shot in cover or are you looking at one to retrieve if so why dont you look at a small lurcher type one with whippet in it this will rat, rabbit take rabbits also retrieve good luck.
  10. agree with all comments lurchers are very adaptable and retreiving to the gun if you shoot a lot is ideal.
  11. well done fellas theres nothing better than a good days ratting.
  12. just a quick note to say thankyou to all of you for your kind words its much appreciated.
  13. i have my lurcher bitch who is 18mths old starting to retreive birds and what have you to me after i have shot them i like my lurcher to be able to help me whatever i am doing ie ratting rabbiting shooting ,so if you want to train the dog to go out with you with the gun i dont see why this cant be part of its training.how old is dog and what is the breeding.
  14. thats a diffrent dog mate my mates is a dog not a bitch but i know what you mean about the work ethic of them.
  15. the dog depends on what you do really the whippet is a good allround dog and mustard on the ratting to be honest we have terriers and whippet and lurcher which is a good combo but the big dogs are that much faster so the little dogs dont get much of a look in if they are on form but the little dogs are unsung heroes because these are generally the ones knocking stuff out for whippet and lurcher if you want a dog for rabbiting and ratting then you cant go far wrong with a whippet hard as nails good luck with your choice.
  16. lost my little border terrier over xmas she was two and a half, took her to the vets because she was coughing and she collapsed and died there the vet xrayed her chest and said she had a enlarged heart and disease to the muscle around it,and the lungs were filling with shite and basically she was putting to much strain on the heart just trying to breathe. to say i am heartbroken is an understatement because i love my dogs and dont mistreat them i think this shows when i work them because they always seem to give everything.i am just sad that i didnt have more time with this loyal and
  17. part of the hunting pack is a black laguna/nimrodel whippet he is very game can be sent on to work ahead also works cover and woodland very well,he is a cracking dog and at the moment is taking rabbits, rats squirrels, and marks very well i would recomend these dogs to anyone espescially if its just for bunnies there aint much to touch them because of there speed and weight ratio and they can be so nimble here is a pic of him out.
  18. what dogs are they and are you just wanting to watch or participate the dogs are a just a bit too young yet but you may be lucky and someone might invite you out .
  19. have to agree a great line of p. burns very sound advice and every word true a very knowledgeable person putting it all together in a couple of sentences without droning on and on.
  20. as ds said to sad to read it all what a waste of top dogs it will set the poor owners back years very heartbreaking.R.I.P
  21. solid looking little dog but whats going on with them socks come on sort it out.
  22. mk1 rapid 7 in 22 and aas410k in 22 very nice.
  23. i wouldnt say they were all thieves however give them a chance and most of them will take it more like mooching scrounging b*****ds.
  24. your in for a few laughs with him trust me.
  25. it isnt a race to get to the finishing line first it sounds to me like she is just starting her apprenticeship let her arse about and do what she wants before you know it she will change right before your eyes the pup looks a belter and with that cross will be quite intelligent and will get bored easily make sure she gets out as often as possible and give her plenty to do so she doesnt get bored if you have other dogs or a partner in crime get out with him as much as you can so the young dog can take it all in,my dog is still mad as a hatter and she is 18mths old however when the boots and coa
