I will quiz him again about the smoker, I cant see why he couldn't shift the horses for an hour or two while we get the job done, at the end of the day this will probably be the best method and if he wont let us do it that way then he is a fool to himself and the job wont be done the best way. As far as the water down the pipe situation goes, I already told him last night we could try pouring water down it and rig a trap/sack up on the outlet pipe(presuming its all connected). He already uses the poison and doesn't have an issue with it, so after doing the water trick a few times over the

Thanks for the replies, I have been up to the farm today to have a look and have spoken to the farmer, he does use poison at the moment and does change the brand of of poison every couple of months and his terrier gets a few of them. The rats are under the paddock where the horse stables are, you can see a couple of holes going under the concrete base of the buildings and he told me he see's them going in and out of a drain pipe that sticks out of the outside wall, they are also seen going into a drain pipe inside the buildings. We have told him we will have to pour some water down the pi

We have just gained 57 acres of rabbit, pigeon, crow and fox permission on the condition we do the rats in the buildings for the farmer. I have never done ratting before with the ferrets and am worried about putting a ferret down a rat hole in case it comes off worst if there's allot of rats down there. I have 9 ferrets in all sizes and sexes and presume the big polecat hob would be the best ferret for the job????? I was wanting advice from someone experienced in ratting with ferrets and some reassurance that the hob is the right ferret for the job and he will be up to dealing with

I know of a cheap bed and breakfast on the loch and the owner does guided fishing trips on his boat for pike as well, I was up there last year and had two 20's out, we had about 50 pike in 2 days between 3 of us, loads of doubles. I can really recomend it to anyone that wants some good pike fishing. The pike on my profile page was from Loch Awe.

I have been doing the same, been out twice over the last 4 weeks just to show my face to the farmer to keep him sweet for the coming season, had 35 rabbits in two outings and I am going again on sunday to do another set we spotted on the way home next his garden. The fist time we went 4 weeks ago there was quite a few tiny ones bolting but when we were there on saturday we didn't see any tiny ones, but we did get 2 or 3 small ones(but big enough to get some meat off them).

I just drill mine and put a knot each side of the hole to stop the cord sliding through the hole and wearing out on the inside of the hole where you cant sand smooth. I like the idea of spliceing them though!

One of my ferrets got a tick a few weeks ago between his toes, he pulled it out himself but I took him to the vets anyway to make sure the head was out. The vet give him a shot of anti biotics just to stop any infection and it was cleared up after a couple of days. One thing I would say if you are removing it yourself is make sure you remove all of the tick and keep an eye on the wound for a few days, if the wound doesn't look like its getting better, get a shot of antibiotics for it from the vet, an infection caught early will save alot of discomfort and money in the longrun.

Thanks for the replies, I will try and get them used to it over the next few of weeks by putting the collars on and off a few times and leaving them on for a few hours at a time. Hopefully once they are used to it if i can get them to associate the collars with going out to work they will should enjoy it when the collars go on because they will realise they are going rabbiting.

I have recently bought some mk 3 collars and a finder and was wondering the best way to get the ferrets used to wearing them? Would it be best to just put them on the ferrets for an hour or so a day,or leave the collars on for a full day once a week? I have a couple of older jills that have never seen a collar before and a few of this years kits. Your suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated

Just bought a mk3 finder and 4 collers last week and couldn't resist trying them out on saturday, ended up with 18 in the bag and no baby ones, really enjoyed it and cant wait for september when the season will start properly.

its interesting what you say about cat litter and shredded paper, do you not find the cat litter dusty on the ferrets coat? my ferrets routinly clean themselves in the shavings if they get egg round their mouths etc The cat litter is the white gravel type and isn't dusty. I have only been using it for the last couple of weeks along with the shredded paper. When I got the mite problem the vet said they have probably got onto the ferrets via the hay/wood shavings(although they were bought from pets at home and wilko's) and the best way to stop it happening is to use shredded paper and

I have recently had a problem with mites on my ferrets, I took them to the vets and they give them all an injection of advocate. This stuff is alot better than frontline, it treats everything in one go including mites and fleas. I scrubbed all of the hutches and runs out and have stopped using wood shavings and hay, I only use shredded paper and cat litter now and the mite problem was cleared up in 24 hours. I was also told by the the vet that frontline is not actually licenced for ferrets although it it will work, the advocate is alot better. It may be worth phoning the vet and asking

I just wondered how long you would leave it before doing a set again with the ferrets and how much success you have had doing the same set again in a short amount of time?

The club stated owns the fishing rights to that stretch of river, fishing from the bankside the sign is on. However the river bank on the other side of the river may be owned by a different farmer and let to a different club. The club pays the farmer/land owner for the right to fish the river from the owned land and access to the river bank, this means the club has the right to fish the river from the land they rent. They dont own the river, only the right to fish from that land. If this is a wide river suitable for boats(presuming boats are allowed on the river and there is somewhere to lau

attaching velcro to stock?
THE GRIFF replied to olim's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
As above, my lamp came with some velcro you just peeled off the back the sticky tape was already on the back. I am sure you can get velcro with a sticky tape already on one side from any craft shop or sewing shop. -
I only had 2 left in the freezer, I new I was running out a couple of weeks ago so have been giving them pigeons and crows inbetween the rabbits to make the rabbits last a bit longer. The ferrets enjoyed as much as I did. Gonna see if I can get a few more bunnies tonight with the air rifle, our lass will be going mad if I put anything else in the freezers, you can hardley shut the lid, might have to overflow into the other freezer(that will go down well!!!)

Already have, my snipped hob got a tick a couple of weeks ago, don't have a clue where it came from, he never goes ferreting and wont eat rabbits or raw meat only dry food, so I check them all daily now. Thanks anyway for the advice.

There are lots of different methods and rigs to fish for pike. First of all you must be confident in unhooking them, they can make a nasty mess of you hands if you don't handle them properly. I always land pike by hand by 'chinning' them out and never use a landing net, this is because nets and treble hooks dont go together in my opinion, however this will come with experiance and would recomend you using a net to start off with. Make sure you have a couple of pairs of long forceps/pliers at least 10-12 inches long and a pair of wire cutter that will easily cut through a treble hook for t

I know it was a bit naughty, but I couldn't wait any longer to get out with the ferrets. Set off at 6 yesterday morning with 4 ferrets and some nets. When we got there we could see dozens of rabbits in the field and spotted a set with 63 holes. We netted the holes and off we went, there was quite a few baby ones got through the nets but we still managed to get 9 decent ones in the bag. The ferrets did get a couple of kills down to hole as the day went on and I presume these were babies, but the ferrets all came back out of the holes eventualy. Apart from not being able to wait any lon

I'm only there on a weekend fri night, sat night, back home sunday and to be honest its not ideal sat on the bankside or pontoon with a gun when family's are up and down on the river on boats and dog walkers are about. Although I have been told by the manager of the marina I can shoot the mink as long as i am descreet about it, I haven't actually got written permission off the owner and dont want to draw attension to myself. I don't want someone complaining and then been told I cant kill the the mink. Last week when i was there I did put some dog food on the pontoon next to mine and thats ho

Where I moor my boat in york is over run with Mink, a few years ago the anti's broke into a mink farm and released them all, this has caused problems on the river ouse as they just kill everything. The mooring/pontoon next to my boat has mink on it regular and I have managed to shoot a couple with the air rifle but they dont stay still for long enough to get a shot. My only other option would be to trap them. As I don't know much about trapping could someone recomend a suitable trap, I do know where the runs are and presume some sort of trap using a tunnel would be the best option. Is is

My albino hob has quite alot of wax in his ears, when he was at the vets getting snipped a couple of months ago I asked the vet about it, she told me this was normal for alot of ferrets and not to worry about it. The vet that I dealt with keeps ferrets herself and I have 100% confidence in her advise, although it is difficult to define exactly how waxy your ferrets ears are compared to mine. Hope this helps

I prefer to have them seperate so that I can easily get which one out I choose and also so that they have there own space, but not too large so that they get knocked about.(just my preferance, I am not saying keeping 2 in one larger compartment is wrong, its just the way I like to work) After thinking about it a bit more I have decided to just make another double box and if I need more than 2 ferrets I can just take 2 boxes(theres always at least 2 or 3 uf us when I go out so carrying them wont be a problem)

I am wanting to make a quad ferret box, with 4 compartments to fit a ferret in each for those days when i will need more than 2 ferrets. What size would you recomend each compartment to be, I thought 10 inch deep by 8 inch wide by 8 inch high, but this will still make the box 32 inch's long. What do you think about 8 inch high 10 inch deep and 7 inch wide, making it 28 inches in length, do you think these compartments are too small?
