  1. Blessed by good weather here the last couple of days. Cold, crisp, blue sky. Supposed to be light or patchy rain tonight mind you. Other than that, field conditions are atrocious given the previous bad weather we had. Everywhere is wet or in a muck. Long spell of stable cold weather would be great.
  2. When I was talking to him that time he never mentioned rabbits at all. I knew there were "some" up there but They were like rats in a rubbish tip, nearly run across the wellies lol. I don't live in a tillage area so this could be rather naive but, they do combine 24 hours a day when they get the weather and work don't they? Hope you're doing well with the lurchers Last night was perfect to get out as well, but I've an appointment this morning, and didn't want to be walking into the office with sleep in my eyes, shirt tail hanging out and start dozing off in the middle of things
  3. Getting a lump of coal for Christmas But, hope to get my rifle threaded and buy a mod in Jan, if I'm a really good boy I'll pillar and glass bed it too!
  4. Thanks folks, it was a late night but our plan worked well enough. BM, I think all the foxes I've taken this year, maybe bar one, have been in excellent condition, even the old ones missing teeth. The first fox Niall shot last night was missing a lower K9 as well. There was some amount of rabbits up there, there's another fair big batch down the end of the valley as well so I guess it's no surprise. Shotgun foxing is my favourite, that's how I learned to do it at the start. I don't often get to do it because the lad I usually get out with will only use a side by side, but I definitely
  5. I haven't used it. I'd just like to clarify I've no intention of giving the trap bad press either. I quite like the idea. Like everything new I've a few questions all the same.
  6. Niall and I had arranged to pay another visit to a valley we have permission it. Last night we'd seen quite a few foxes there, most likely the beginning of mating season as they didn't seem as sharp as usual. We brought my .223 and also my semi auto shotgun in case of close encounters of a canine kind. After tea in Nialls house and a chat with his Dad about foxing and shooting in general we headed off. I had long ago asked a farmer there about walking his land at some stage to look for fox. He was delighted at the suggestion, though he's not been complaining about foxes another farmer lowe
  7. Solder it, but put heat shrink wrap on the wires before, then you can heat them to fit when the soldering is done. Otherwise, solder and lashings of insulation tape
  8. Not for the first time I'm wrong Magnum are enquiring into the badger situation, they've received a few similar questions to mine.
  9. Strange that they don't trial fox traps as you say. Probably be Monday before Magnum get back to me. What're the DOC traps by the by?
  10. My fav John is that the rough or creamy one? There's a creamy one
  11. First email was to WCS, just fired off another to Magnum
  12. Just wondering why you specify Canada OTC. I know, or at least I think, that the grey fox is the more numerous fox in the USA but they have red lads over there too. Their badgers are different though, you're right.
  13. You can't beat the yanks for a quick reply. This is what I asked. "I have been looking at your collarum trap, and talking to friends about it. The thing we have been wondering about is has the trap been tested in areas containing badgers as well as canines. Over here in Ireland the badger is a protected species and anyone caught killing one can get in a lot of trouble. I like the collarum as another tool in the arsenal against the red fox, but am concerned about badgers getting caught up in them, both for their sake, equipment damage and the associated destruction of the immediate area
  14. Swings and roundabouts though isn't it Dave. Give it time and ye'll have the good weather and it'll be pissing it down here
  15. I know the American sites sell different types of lures as a trigger bait. I wonder can it be that specific, I must email them and ask.
  16. In that case you'll be happy to know I don't. Can't be doing this work with soft hands.
  17. How did you know Kay Makes a difference from fox piss or sheep shit, so I'm not complaining
  18. Try this Bloody lovely stuff
  19. Baikal MP-153, much more reliable than the hatstands.
  20. Not been foggy here since Dwighet came up, mind you it's a risk in this weather isn't it. Pain in the ass when you get lovely weather and the fog comes down in the evening.
  21. Yeah I'm very happy with it, and Niall enjoyed the night a lot too! We might give them another crack tomorrow night if the weather is as good as tonight.
  22. Niall sent me a text around tea time, that being 6pm ish, not that that's the best time for tea, who am I to make a fuss. Was I up to anything tonight? I knew what was coming next. We might head out for a look. It so happens I wasn't doing anything tonight, and just also happened to have a fully charged battery! I headed out to Nialls, laden to the gills with calls, rangefinder, bullets, all the paraphernalia associated with the job. First spot we lamped was belonging to Nialls Dad. I think the last time we had been there together we were lucky to get out alive, surrounded by foxes on all
  23. Problem with poison is they'll go and die under the floorboards and stink you out. I've been using live catch mink cages to get the rats out in the yard. Got a couple of multiple catch rat traps yesterday, set one but nothing so far. Using peanut butter as bait.
  24. Here's a question, how does a person keep badgers out of these traps? Seeing as how ordinary snares aren't baited.
