  1. Taffy is the name given to a paste made of (usually) eggs from migratory fish. It is supposed to be highly attractive to all species of fish in particular game fish. It is, has has already been stated, illegal Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 sec 2. The new Marine and Coastal Access Act amended the section to include the roe (eggs) from any species of fish not just migratory fish. It is not only illegal to use it but also illegal to possess it with the intention of using it as a bait. Keiran needs to be careful he does not fall foul of an Environment Agency bailiff.
  2. In reply to BRYKAY's last post Just to set the record straight. Hammerite were not prosecuted, and neither were Kimberley Clark, before somebody raises that old chestnut. All the evidence available pointed to High water temperature and low dissolved oxygen for both 92, 95 and even more recently. It was then, and may be again unfortunately, a natural rather than man made tragedy, which makes it all the more difficult to stomach. Even though the Tyne is now regarded as the best salmon river in Engalnd and Wales we can still ask how much better would she have been.
  3. Yes they can be very effective at times but, and I'msorry to put a dampner on this, irrespective of their success they are totally illegal. SAFFA section1 and if caught a person could be liable for £5000 and/or three months in prison. If the instance was felt serious enough and the case went to Crown Court there is a maximum of two years imprisonment with a fine at the judge's discretion. Let's not get into the debate about the two offences relating to small (undesize?) live brownies being used for live bait.
  4. Hi, An otter board or lathe is, usually, a piece of wood about 12" X 8" with a lead strip along one of the long edges to help it sit upright in the water. It is attached to a long line used to pay out lures, flies or whatever, that are suspended by another length of line from the board. The board can be directed/guided to where you want using wind or current and by using the long line as a control. It is illegal and regarded as a prohibited instrument in England and Wales. What 'Main Man' is referring to is, in my neck of the woods, called an otter and as he says used to help release sn
