Got it. Thanks for the informative replies. And sorry for jumping on your post matey. Im just an old fashioned type of person.

Well I agree, there are good books and bad, good authors and bad. Ive wasted good money on books that went straight into the fire, i couldnt even bring myself to give em to the youngens to read. I think I will bite the bullet again and buy it, what the hell, its been a long time since Ive bought a dog book and deer have always been my bag.

OK so is it to help an unfit dog do more work than it can handle? Would this not put extra strain on the heart/lungs? I will stick to keeping my dogs fit, well fed, and worked hard. But let us know how you get on with the stuff, and christ be carefull. All that crazy new potions for this and that make me damn nervous. good luck

I have hunted with three lads from England who are also on this site, they operate in 3 different counties of England, and do wild boar and feral pig control with the aid of tracking dogs. The dogs are essential, they find the boar and hunt them relentlessly, GPS is used to anticipate the boars movements so a safe shot can be made. If the boar is accidentally brought to bay, it is shot asap. And as far as Im aware as long as they use just 2 hounds, then this is acceptable and has been verified with the authorities in each county. A bull/Grey is a good boar stopper if you invest the time makin

Hello Just curious, what is this stuff? Is it like lucozade for dogs to improve performance? i cant comment on its use, sorry, I have never seen any working dogs needing it, and Ive worked my dogs hard. My belifs are, that if your dogs cant cope with their work on a natural diet of (meat/bone/fat/offal) then you need to look at your management practice, as we have dogs bred for jobs that can handle hard work and will never want or need any artificial additives or drugs at all if their fit and well. Could you tell me why you use them, maybe help me understand your point of view. th

I started ranting on, while replying to that other post, but ive cut it and chucked it up seperate in this post. for those asking about lions, all I can say is, save up a few hundred quid, and get a return ticket to anywhere in the west of the Americas. Hook up with some hunters before hand, theres loads of them on the various forums on the net, or if you struggle, contact me. Belive me its a great experience. But then, almost everywhere has good hunting to offer if you put in the work to find the right folk to go out with ( that suit you, and your budgets etc). Lion hunting is something

Ok, thanks for the help folks, il try and get hold of a copy. I get the impresion it will be a decent read. Matey you made me smile, I feel like you all the time, I always feel like Im alone in those situations! Well apart from my constant summer holiday companion THE WIFE who thinks Im a nut job talking about dogs all the time and wanting to be back out hunting rather than drinking cocktails on the beach. Heck even the Hula dancers get tedious after a while!! Take care

Hello chaps, Me again, been abroad... hunting, flat-out, pigs/boar, deer, lion, and various small vermin. Its been great travelling the America's. I've seen good dogs, some great dogs- I'd be brave enough to say. I do however always miss my hunting back home, and in Europe, and I dearly miss my dogs as they would be in their element on these rough and ready hunting trips for big stuff. Ive only been back a few days, and just logged on to this site, usually a decent read to be found, (deffinately a decent laugh to be had). I seen that book in the side column.. ''of dogs and deer'' by Dar

Im usually after bigger fish but you know the crack, back in the day out with a mate or two Id go for foxes to keep owners happy and good crack, good sport, NEVER felt the need to double up, most of my dogs catch fox easy enough given a fair slip, As for easing young stock in with a velvet glove, seen this too much, and seen too many dogs that are kept along with many excuses by their owners 'their slow starters' they saw stuff too young' etc etc if I lent the dog it would Jack the same day. Dont make excuses, shit is shit, dont try polish it,. If their not good single handed, their no good to

Didnt read the whole thred, to be honest I was expecting the rubbish, I might have a trawl through after adding my piece. 1 why use track blood? Well people have their reasons I suppose, but it seems crazy that anyone would go through the trouble of starting a new line of dogs when we have dogs here purpose bred for all jobs, bred the proper way, worker to worker. In fact it irritates me this thread, as my granda (this is way back in 1800s) used to work pure greyhounds in the field and never crossed them, he took all game regularly, and if we had only kept them working we would st

ITs almost as if foxes are regarded as a test for a lurcher, even a bull cross. Get to f**k, when my dogs are killing foxes they think their on holiday. Thats just my take on em, but right enough they can give a nice run at times, and are feckin pests that need controlling so it wouldnt bother me how many dogs you used, but Im not the sort of person to keep a dog that would not cope on its own like some seem to.

fast as a greyhound and run for 5 or 6 mins
HALTY LAD replied to speedie's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If you entered a galgo into a single handed best of three in the UK, I wouldnt be keen to back you, but its great to see working greyhound lines with far better working physiqe than the UK greyhounds, the stamina is way up, and the feet and general conformation are better suited to chasing wild game. I often wonder why they arent used more often in UK breeding, instead of the shite that I keep seeing used? -
Do You Let Any One Else Use Your Dogs
HALTY LAD replied to Catcher 1's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I have relied heavily on a few trusted friends when it comes round to aquiring a new pup, as they do all the nitty gritty of keeping a good strain of dogs going, wheras I just reap the rewards, for that im always grateful. I only spend about 50% of the year in the UK and so my 4 lurchers are kennelled with two friends, the dogs and my friends are well aquainted, and yes they will be worked while im abroad. I know they are happy as pigs in shit with their abode and routine there, and they crave work like demons so the more they get the better. If tradgedy unfolds whilst hunting, I wont hold it -
Ive personally seen both, in 3/8 5/8. Thats why I always stick to a trusted line of dogs, I find it more reliable to get the type I need.
-
Like has been said, dogs are bred for different types of work, so its logical people keep the sort that suits its job(s). I have always kept dogs as strong as possible but need to be very fast with it, So racey with a big strong jaw for me.

When I was a laddie, my father would have clipped me round the head if I told him I tried for a stag with one of our hounds. Its not wise. And I still had to learn the hard way despite all the best advice and having an upbringing hunting with lurchers.

Well, what the f**k can one say, after reading through this pish. 1 dog, f**k off, even small staggies and hinds can take a single dog away. 2/3 dogs, can take hinds and winter calves regularly enough. f**k the rutt altogether, as they are too mixed up, big herds of hinds are a pain too as dogs can seperate and go for different beast. Best stalking into small groups of hinds before, but mostly after the rut, in these groups you often have small young staggies which ive seen stopped. No fences or hedges in some parts, and plenty of beasts of under and around 10 stone in weight. Its all about wh

I never breed my own stock (but I do stick to certain lines and types nowadays), but I can imagine you will be pleased with how the litter is shaping up? They look like they should make a feisty, rough n ready sort of dog, capable of various jobs.

I guess Im lucky, as ive never lived by the clock. It wouldnt change anything for me, so I honestly dont have any worries about it!

Good work fella's

You are a good man to have around, always in the thick of it ! And like you know, your always welcome out with us, anytime. Plus we need the extra pair of hands to carry all those rabbits off the land!!

major rabbit wipe out and what if anything can be done
HALTY LAD replied to seldom fed's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ive been hunting in the north and the south of britain this season and ive noticeed the same decline in many areas. But some areas are still very healthy. It was even declining in some areas befor the bad winters, as long as 10 or 15 years ago in some spots and they have never come back in decent numbers. A lot of the well keepered areas are thriving as vermin is kept in check, and the rabbits get protection from this, might just be coincidence but predation from wildlife as well as over shooting may be a factor? -
no mate but one looks like it may be broken coated. Im after a rough half bull cross. Probably Deer/Bull or similar. If you hear of any litters planned Dean id be keen Apreciated. Il mention your pups to a few friends who may be interested, all the best finding good homes.
