A few real younguns get killed, but rare. The only way you can read it IMO is your saying it can't be done. Can you tell me what is the range of size of boar you have hunted? Maybe in clear woodland with no thick stuff (maybe youve done it commercially and 'keepered' situations - not meant derogatorily sp. Id like to experience the same, but my hunting is the other end of the scale!), "decent dogs" can choose (I dont know), but cannot see dogs picking/choosing scent of an easier animal by scent. Hunt/hunted a lot with mostly hounds and seen lots get on the sharp end & have dealt wi

I also think its down to the type of lurcher. My big deerhoundy lurchers probably at 18 to 24 months they are as fast as they will ever be, but with age comes cunning! The bull sort I have seem to be very fast at 12 months, they can then go back a bit if they bulk up but I try to keep em lean n mean. My friend who races grews and greyhounds will say his dogs are fastest between 12 months and 3 years then they often slow down fairly rapidly, and seeing the ammount of retired dogs at 4 or 5 it seems to be the case. I still find that my older dogs are fast enough to catch their game even at ar

Got to disagree. based on my experiences of the breed. Ive seen good bulldogs on pigs in florida and Oklahoma, fair catch dogs mate, Ive only seen two Am Bull crosses over here in the UK, both in England, and both were no way as efficient and clinical as a bull cross, one was a white bitch, which jacked later that season. When I saw it it did do its job, fair play but it was a bit floppy cock in its methods. Just based on my personal opinion of the breed in general, they make a good general hunting dog, but for hard work they are shadowed by bull cross. There have been several imports to the U

Many have been matey, the line of dogs I have go back to the 70's, the bull cross to the 's and they have been bred best to the best since the line was founded, not by me I might add! Just look at the coursing bred dogs, those lads have bred best to the best for many years too, and their dogs are fine athletes, and great at their job. Same can be said for all sporting diciplines. It really baffles me why folk still pump out first cross lurchers? Madness Im not knocking you but a fool and his money are easily parted, its hard to take someone's word that he has lines of dogs going bac

your right dogs can turn,,,,but i know some heavy well built dogs cant turn,,,,,,,it all depends on the speed they reach and height dont post on here if ya dont know,,,,,ive seen the old fashion bully types cant and some can,,,but ive seen many not turn and whack straight into tree or fence,,,,uve answered ur own post it comes down to determination,,,,yet a similar dog can fall in that trap themselfs,,and be half a ton lighter and built and be as skinny as a ss whippet lol Excuse me, but Ive seen enough over my 65 years with dogs to give a valid opinion matey! And belive me when I say, not

Genuine words Chalkwarren, Im dredding hanging up the slip leads for good and shining up the zimmer frame, scares the crap out of me truth be told! Looking back on how I used to hunt, yes I was mad keen, I covered more land, and took game that I couldnt dream of nowadays, I was hard on my dogs, but they were as keen as me, we were a team with a like minded goal.

Good bull cross CAN turn, and they have more drive, more determination, more jaw than any other cross going. Now dont get me wrong I keep and work other types of lurcher, as there are benefits to be had from different strains. Dont knock them, they have their place and will no doubt keep it with those that need that special something. Ive seen them take all quarry day and night, I mean all quarry, from rats to boar and red deer. No other dog will give that much to its game than the bull terrier

Good crack lads, dont let the arsewipes on these forums set ye back. Keep at em.

cant see the video matey, but Ive seen some crazy bull runs. Had some near misses myself! Theres nothing like a bull hurtling towards you, tossing bystanders from side to side- to get the old ticker pumping!

Again my apologies Chartpolski, you sound like a good chap, I took it on a bit of a tangent there matey, I swear its the wine.

Joe, you'll see by my original post, that I wasn't advocating bringing in new blood....simply asking IF it would be worth it. My own opinion is NO, it isn't worth it, as we have, as you say, pleanty of good blood right here, but theres some on here who seem to think the dogs "over the pond" are some sort of mystical beast, that we can't equal ! I think that if people here put more thought into what they are breeding, and only used good stock, there wouldn't be so mich dross about. Cheers. Hell I can rabbit on at times. My apologies. Its the mulled wine

Well, having hunted and travelled a bit all say is based on what I reckon to be the case. Yes we were unfortunate in the UK in the past, when longdogs were banned and very heavy penalties were inplace for deer poachers. At the time we were, and had been for centuries using longdogs of various strains to catch our native quarry. They came in differing sizes and with rough and smooth coats. And more than likely with stamina to spare and all we could possibly want for our land, which back then included wolves as a common quarry. We then saw our longdogs slip into the hands of the aristocracy

Whippets for rabbits are they ideal??
HALTY LAD replied to panther82's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ive seen some very good whippets over the years. they really can hoover up bolted rabbits. And yes, they can take other game like hares, fox and roe. But personally I have never even been tempted to own one. I really need a bigger type for the stuff I do, but mine will still catch rabbits -
best country for terriermen.....
HALTY LAD replied to CarraghsGem's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Ive been hunting in South America, USA, all over Europe,Australia and I still love and relish the hunting each time I return to the UK. I am lucky to have some great land to hunt over, good friends who also take me out, good dogs which my friends keep and work while im away... and loads of game!! You would be happy if you stick to where your heart is as your home base, then just travel A LOT hunting all over the world, or if you cant leave your dogs, stick to Europe. I regularly take my dogs hunting all over Europe and Ive never had any bother with re-entering the UK with marked up dogs etc a -
If your worried about your dog getting hurt, you would be better going down the route of a couple of hound or hound crosses. They will bay up a boar and mostly just stand off and shout. You will be better off with a rifle with open sights or a handgun( if allowed) to dispatch it. And its within the legal framework of the hunting act in England and Wales, flushing to a gun.

Iv seen some brutish dogs on wild boar and feral pig, but Ive never seen a mature pig killed, weve always shot or stuck the pigs as soon as we can, as any decent hunter would. Yeeha, Im not sure what your trying to say, but Ive spent a heck of a lot of time in Sussex, and though you need a hell of a game plan to catch any there it is achievable.

Headshot08 I belive you may well just be trying to incite a 'certain response' from folk who genuinely hunt boar, but if you belive in what you say, I can only assume you have a very poor idea of what a good bull cross can do. Put it this way, there have been plenty of boar held with no more than a couple of terriers! What do you think of that? Unbelievable? In fact most breeds of working dogs will have, at some point or another- hunted boar or pigs. Yes damage to a holding dog (a dog that grabs the boar and hangs onto an ear) can be brutal if the dogs arent waring chest plates, thats why they
