  1. Take a look at "chicken coops" on eBay, look for the ark style ones with welded mesh. All you need to do with them is put a front on the nest box to make it dark and cosy for them.
  2. I've got bells on my locator collars so I can hear if a ferret has come up out of sight.
  3. The orange one is orange, the black (or graphite one) is much darker. Other than that there's no difference. I went for orange so I don't misplace the bugger.
  4. You did well staying calm. These pricks have nothing to lose but will run straight to plod if they feel 'wronged'. A complaint against you may see any chance of firearms ownership out of the window. Always take car reg and descriptions. Apart from intimidation, if they are on private land and obstructing a lawful activity it's also aggravated trespass (which unlike normal trespass is a criminal offence)
  5. Big bags are good from the farmers point of view but I personally prefer shooting when I can remember every bird/good shot of the day. At certain times of the year then the few birds you've worked hard for are far better than a sackful taken when they are literally flying into your barrels to hit the pattern.
  6. You need an order from releveant local authority to close a footpath (Footpath Closure Order), pest control would be unlikely to get classed as a legitimate reason.
  7. The wording of the GL is only that you must be "satisfied" that other methods would not be effective, you don't have to actually try them yourself. As long as you are confident that a scarecrow or gas gun would soon be ignored and that running up and down the field waving your arms would only disperse the gulls for a short period of time rather than preventing them returning...
  8. Walking round the farms or doing a pest control round on the shoot then it's 32g 6's every time. Always keep two napier snap loaders with 52g BB's in my handwarmer pocket for special occasion though
  9. I've got a a Bulldog rabbiting spade (see here). Can't fault it - strong, well built and easy to use. I've also got a shorter spade that I don't really like for digging but my buddy loves it. Shorter spades are good for really tight spaces but can be bloody hard work as there is less leverage.
  10. everyone is quoting from the countryman's weekly! Don't read CW, was told it by my dad when we used to go snaring back when I was a lad.
  11. They get used to hunters/shooters etc dropping crumbs for them or throwing a corner of a sandwich etc. Used to have one that came to the cars whenever we parked up to go beating. By the end of the season it would land straight on the mirror and look into the car if you didn't give it crumbs straight away.
  12. Sounds like a night out in Birkenhead.
  13. Dirt cheap bottle brush from Tesco (value range one is about a quid). Bend the brush so it's "L" shaped at the top, make the bend the same length as from the hole to the edge of the bottle and it's a piece of cake to clean both the neck and the base... Simples.
  14. Close but no cigar The term for multicoloured fur is Agouti (as mentioned here previously), "Melanism" is the genetic mutation that allows a surplus of melanin (pigment) and gives a dark "melanistic" appearance. Melanism is the opposite of Albinsm which is a lack of pigmentation and gives "Albino" animals. Have a look at these two, they are definitely throwbacks to released pets.
  15. That's because black rabbits were released by warreners and keepers as a way of keeping tabs on poaching and predation. If you know there are usually three black'uns in a field and they disappear it's a warning sign. They are more obvious than just counting the "normal" rabbits on a field.
  16. Mine get a check last thing at night whatever the weather. I'm amazed the bottles haven't frozen, not even the stainless nozzles. Mine got a lot of extra straw the other night, if they fell it's too much they shove it out. It's always worth checking that their bedding isn't damp from body heat/sweat because it's pretty useless as insulation when it's damp.

Bit of a waste of a ferret

    Tangled nets

Cheers fellas, I just wanted to make sure nobody was going to say "whatever you do, don't take out the draw cords..."

    Tangled nets

It's only at the ends, I've tried passing the bag back over the knot at the end but it's been pulled through the meshes a few times...

    Tangled nets

I've recently acquired a long net and two gate nets. They are quite badly tangled towards the ends where I think the bag has got bunched up and then somebody's had a go at un-tangling it. Am I best undoing the runners, sorting the net out and then re-threading? I've struggled like hell to unravel them but not sure what's coming out of where...
  21. Came across a hole full of bees (well a few in there) today whilst backfilling, not something I'd ever thought of as a problem until now.
  22. The phrase you are looking for is:
  23. May I remind people of the saying "never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience". I doubt very much whether anybody here is an expert on genetics. I'm of the opinion that out of any litter (even working x working) you will get ferrets that just don't have the drive, equally you will occasionally get a "pet" ferret that has the drive and aptitude to work a warren really well (just like with gun dogs).
  24. It's a rank based on forum usage, the ranks progress through stages according to post count. Repalce the word "hunter" with "poster" and they make more sense, but seeing as the forum is called "Hunting Life" it's fair to say that those on here are hunters (or certainly think they are). I've encountered a lot of "chairgunners" in my time. Anybody can whack up 3000+ posts by saying things like "nice pics mate" and "cracking" but others prefer to seek help or provide answeres, sometimes wit ha little banter or chat thrown in for good measure. I've been on here to ask for tips and advice
  25. I use ceramic "spaniel" bowls, wider base so they can't get tipped over.
