Skip, All of the prizes were as advertised INCLUDING A 15Kg BAG OF MEAL for each Class winner. If you didn't get your meal take it up with the T&L show organiser. I have seen several photographs were the winners have meal - what class did you win? Did you go forward to the Championship - if you had you would have seen the Champion get £50 and a superb bronze trophy ( ALL AS ADVERTISED). Basically we supply the prizes and the show organiser is given them to dispense. This is the same for all of the events. I don't stand at any of the other events personally handing out the prizes. The p

SKIP with a CHIP on his shoulder! However unlike quite a few of the trolls who think it smart to criticise the largest country sports events in Ireland and arguably the best defence against the threat to hunting with dogs - you actually appear to have been there. The others base their criticism on something they HEARD about or other rumours passed on three and four times. The prizes for the show and racing were well advertised in advance ( as above). Prizes for each showing class was a 15Kg bag of dog food plus limited edition good quality china mug. £50 plus trophy in Champions Class a

From what I've seen on Facebook and elsewhere it appears to have been a great day - well done Tom on your initiative. Delighted to give a little sponsorship - as you know although the sponsorship pot is running a little dry after the number of events, people, clubs we have sponsored this year - we are always willing to listen to requests for assistance for innovative sporting events or those linked to charity. -
Thanks we are trying something a little bit different to encourage all terrier & lurcher owners including the more experienced show goers and racers to come and have a bit of craic with a wider chance of gaining prizes. With ferret showing and racing also taking place it is going to be an ACTION PACKED day and there is a big value ticket offer for advanced purchase before 15th September - Tickets purchased in advance are £10 and you get two free entries worth £3 each to a race or show class. Tickets also available at gate for £10 but then show and race classes are £3 each.

The Birr Game fair staged on the 27th & 28th September was the 60th Game Fair organised by the Great Game Fairs of Ireland since we launched the Fairs in 1979 to promote and defend all country sports in Ireland. It was a huge success with the largest number of traders ever, a tremendous prize fund, brilliant weather and good crowds - record on Saturday and not far off a record on Sunday. Most trade exhibitors had great bargains on offer and all traders were delighted with the huge turnout of people and many posted record sales. Photographs of the huge crowds will be posted on our facebook

I am a country sports enthusiast who has been a dog owner and trainer all my life. My father had border terriers , my uncle corgis and he gave my first dog which I used for ratting. I progressed to gundogs rather than terriers and lurchers. But I have always supported both publicly and behind the scenes legitimate hunting with terriers & lurchers. I definitely have nothing in common with people who support dog dealers selling unwanted dogs in poor condition and apparently gathered up to make a quick buck. From the messages of support I have had from terrier & l

I have just been speaking to and working with a man who rehomes gundogs. He works very hard at this and ensures every dog is rehomed to a permanent home. The contrast between this guy and the person who arrived at our fair to try to make a fast buck by selling unwanted dogs in poor condition is so great, that when I came home to be greeted with people who would profess to be real 'doggy men' wanting to ally themselves to someone such as the guy we asked to leave the fair - I am truly sickened. I am sorry gentlemen but if you think the activities of this person deserve your support then I h

A huge difference between dogs and ferrets including even lifespan. However with the risk of pups being an impulse purchase at the fair or very young pups having a long and hard day at the fair I am against dogs being sold. In previous years I fielded the complaints and went round all of the people selling pups to make sure they had food and water but I did tell them all we were stopping this. The dog dealer has been on my radar for a few years as I have always been concerned by the number of complaints we have had about him. but how can you complain about someone selling pups when yous

Hatch, If you were in any way hassled by the ISPCA please give me details ( byPM) and I will make a formal complaint as their only role there was to prevent the sale of dogs and pups and the threat to their welfare. As Shane said the dogs owned by the person I asked to leave were in miserable condition, from doubtful sources and most of them filthy - I saw two that he 'sold' or gave away limping away. Apart from the complaints they generated I felt they were an infection hazard to other dogs at the fair. If it had been up to me I would have taken the dogs from him but I personally felt

I thought I was finished with this but had to reply to such absolute nonsense. Firstly the admission fee was and has always been €15 ADULT and €5 for a child between 5 and 15 . Unless your child was a very old looking 10 - the fee would have been €5. The ISPCA would not have had any contact with you unless you were trying to sell dogs or pups. AND as you know we made it clear on HL and elsewhere that the Garda had requested we try to prevent the selling of pups and dogs. The man who was requested to leave by the GARDA was refunded his money - although he like you claimed to have been char

Mary, When the Garda or ISPCA get public complaints concerned for the welfare of pup and dogs for sale ( and these were even made by members of the hunting/countrysports community publicly on this and other forums) it takes it out of our hands. We made it quite clear that there were no pups or dogs to be sold this year and everyone had to pass a large sign quite clearly stating this. If people had fallen into line with this the ISPCA/Garda involvement in the show would have ended very quickly as no problem /no need for them to be there. BUT certain individuals decided to try to circumvent thi

Corkman, The sequence was as follows : The issue of complaints from the public about young pups and dogs in poor condition being sold at the fair was raised in our meeting with the local Sgt in March. It was actually the first item on his agenda and one that I addressed in my response to his Spt. "1. Dogs for sale on ground He raised the issue of dogs and pups being offered for sale at the fair. This is something that we do not allow at our Northern events and something we have been trying to discourage at Birr. In the past couple of years I have toured this area myself to ensure the pu

Neil, Interesting point - I don't know anything about the ISPCA - this was my first contact with them via the Garda's request to have them there. As you say the USPCA certainly had an anti hunting agenda when they seized some dogs which they had to return in a case I was involved in as a witness for the owner. At Birr the agreed objective of the Garda, ISPCA and ourselves was to address public concern and complaints about very young puppies and dogs in poor condition being sold at Birr. That was the agreed 'agenda' and nothing more and I felt the ISPCA stuck to this.
-
JMO, Thanks for clarifying that we do not 'hide away' any sports at our events. In fact one of the first things we do at Birr is prepare the lurcher racing course! As I said the location of the course and rings is quite simple - it is the best piece of ground available for them at Birr and one that can offer ringside parking - very similar to the clays in the same field. As you say we welcome the IWTF to take its position on the main site with the other organisations and provide tented accommodation for them and of course finally we showcase terriers & lurchers in the main arena for the

The General, The Great Game fairs OF Ireland HAVE FOR 38 YEARS BEEN PROMOTING AND DEFENDING ALL FORMS OF LEGAL HUNTING publicly, behind the scenes and politically by working with all the main countrysports organisations including the IWTF. I repeat once more why the ISPCA were there at the invitation of the Gards who were reacting to a large number of complaints about young pups and dogs in poor condition being sold at Birr. That was the sole reason they were there and NO ONE who was showing or racing a dog was hassled. In spite of a number of rumours there were NO photographs taken of

The General, I agree a lot with what you say and indeed I went as a witness for a terrier & lurcher owner whose dogs had been seized by the USPCA.. We won the case and the dogs were returned. As you can see from the above I DID NOT WELCOME the ISPCA to the show but agreed with the Guards that they could be there - the sole objective was to stop pups and dogs being sold at the fair especially those that had been the subject of public AND genuine terrier & lurcher fraternity complaints. Apart from the harm this was doing to the image of genuine terrier & lurcher owners it did no

As usual a lot of misinformation posted based on people 'hearing or assuming things' FACTS : 1. The Guards due to a large number of complaints from the public about pups and particularly dogs in poor condition being sold last year had asked that we publicise NO DOGS for SALE which we did. They also advised that they would be asking the ISPCA to attend. 2. We obviously had to agree to this BUT I spoke to the ISPCA before the show in detail to define precisely what they would and could do on site. It was agreed that no owner of a dog racing or showing would be in anyway hassled at th
