I am honoured to join a long list of celebrities to be photographed with Foxgun Tom. In his colourful Scottish outfit he was in great demand to be photographed at Shanes Castle. Joining us at the conclusion of the most successful ever and best attended ever Irish Game Fair was Terrier Judge Joe Kyrollos. I thought it fitting that Tom who judged the new Puppy Championship (between Champion Whippet, Terrier and Lurcher Pups) and Joe who judged the All Ireland Terrier Championship sending the Champion through to the Five Nations Champonship at Birr, should be presented with bottles of IRISH

Neil, It is indeed unfortunate that the rally should clash with the first day of the show. Our dates have been set for over a year and obviously the rally has been called much later apparently in the full knowledge that it would coincide with our Fair. We obviously support RISE not only in the magazine but also have invited them to attend our Fairs where they would be guaranteed a crowd and the opportunity to put their message strongly. Our Fairs have been demonstrating substantial support for country sports including hunting for 32 years and Shanes had record crowds for any Irish Gam -

The Whippet judging at the All Ireland Championships at Shanes Castle will be in the capable hands of Rose McCoy. This is the first year we have given whippets full parity with the Terriers & Lurchers so lets give Rose a truly record entry. Albertj

Judges for All Ireland Terrier & Lurcher Championships

I appreciate what you are saying but fast dogs have to have good construction or heart. I am sure John is sensible enough to make a decent job of the 'working classes' within the constraints of judging for confirmation. as I say we hope to produce new competitions next year for real 'working dogs. Good to hear from you Tully - last time we heard from you you wanted the 'champion' from your show to qualify -now something else! What would appear consistent about you is your desire to criticise. If you look back through the mass of correspondence I have had it was always the Champion from the All Ireland at Shanes and the Champion from Birr who were the Irish qualifiers. The other qualifying shows chose their qualifier differently. It will make for an interesting qualifier. To be frank as someone who has shown working dogs at KC shows I really don't know what the fuss is about 'wo -
Judges for All Ireland Terrier & Lurcher Championships

Twiggy, I don't know John terribly well except for seeing him at the Fairs and watching his dogs run. I also know he has travelled to compete with the best in the UK with Storm, Colt and China. What impressed me most about him was that he takes his wins graciously and his defeats well - I remember him taking Seamus Erwin's immortal line really well when Seamus coined the phrase ' Colt shot down in flames' and we published it! All the top shows in the Uk accept that these dogs are lurchers - but I suspect that many who finish behind them wish they weren't! -

Twiggy, Simple question what have you done in lurcher showing or racing that is comparable to what John has done? It would really sappear from comments on this forum that a 'prophet has no honour in his own country' and especially if he is successful in his or her chosen sport. We happen to think that Irish lads who have done well and been game enough to 'put their money where their mouth is' and have gone to compete and beat the best in the Uk are entitled to some respect and offered the chance to judge in their own country. Fair enough everyone has the opportunity to decide wheth -

who is judging the terriers in birr albert Des Macken is judging the ROI Championships. Des like Seamus Erwin our Terrier Director has won most of the big championships. He is well known for the quality of his terriers and we felt it was time to show that there are good Irish judges about. There is a three judge and referee system for the Final of the Five Nations Championships. The lurcher judge wishes to keep their identity a secret but is a well know lurcher enthusiast from the UK. in my eyes thats not an improvement with des macken as a judge i thought it was a workin terrier s -
New TV deal for Irish Game Fairs Fieldsports Channel (www.fieldsportschannel.tv) has teamed up with The Great Game Fairs of Ireland as its main arena sponsor at its upcoming game fair. Terrier & lurcher showing at Florencecourt will start at 1.30pm. Two top IRISH judges : John Kelly Lurchers and Tom Flynn, Galway for Terriers. These two guys are veteran handlers and judges and really know their stuff. If your dog wins under these guys - it will be good!
-
Have you seen the prizes on offer up at the Moira show for the lurchers and terriers? Thats where we're heading. Will you not be there already Bill?

John Kelly judging lurchers at Florencecourt. Great dog man - knows his stuff.

Due to a query from my old critic Fionn, I thought I would reinforce the point that both Shanes Castle and Birr Castle are qualifiers for the Five Nations Championship which will be judged after the normal show at Birr on Sunday 29th August. As Birr will be the last chance for any dog to qualify we know that there will be stiff international competition for the final qualifying place. Full details will be on our web sites next week
