Five Nations and Irish Game & Country Fair
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Well done to all the qualifying dogs it was a great display of working dogs. Judging from the outside of the ring - not something one really should do as you don't have the experience of going over the dogs my own three as an 'all rounder' judge who judges various breeds at KC shows my own three against the field were the first and 2nd plus the Birr Champion - I think the latter would have been better shown on a loose lead. However 6 good dogs and interesting to see 4 of a type. The judging was tight and we set it up to be totally independent as anyone could see there was no conferring. -

Neil, There were two articles that I recall written on Seamus Erwin - one by Emma Cowan and one I think by Paul Pringle. I was with Emma when she interviewed Seamus and he had quite a good pictorial record of his line and where they came from and went to BUT as an occasional but serious breeder of gundogs I don't think I would have made such a sweeping statement about any bloodlines in such a diverse range of bloodlines that are obviously in working terriers. However as I said before we are always willing to accept suggestions for profiles of terrier & lurcher people or discussion -

Scent, Thanks for your good wishes. Parking for terrier and lurchers is on site through gate C but with a huge clay pigeon shoot ( €15,000 in prizes) also having parking in the same parkland and with demand for stands so great that the main site at Birr is completely booked up with stands us having had to start secondary rows in MountPalmer opposite the terrier & lurcher rings. I suggest if you want guaranteed ringside parking get there early. There is a full main arena programme from 10.00 to 6.00 each day including terrier, whippets and lurcher displays in the main arena -

Terrier2, Yes Tom has been the main inspiration for the Five Nations and it was a delight to work with him and to have Joe and he over to Shanes where Tom's cameo slot in judging the best puppy from among the terrier, lurcher & whippet pups was very well received. I must stress he did not watch or see the terrier judging! Fran and he have put in a lot of hard work in the UK to make this new championship a success. I know he and his judging team will do a fair and impartial job of judging the Five Nations and it is highly unfortunate that it would appear someone from the UK and a -

judges, how many shows have the antrim club actually got a judge that wasnt in their club The club have been running shows for 28 years and few if any of the shows have been judged by club members. I responded to Neil Cooney who attacked our organisers and our fairs and make no apology for doing so. He described our organisers as a joke and I responded in like vein about Ballinlough which he judged. I didn't make the claim that Ballinlough had 180 stands I queried it. The organisers claimed it had grown - from my reports it had gone back massively in crowds. I certainly reserve the -

Fionn, Thanks for your input - if you look back through your posts and all of this thread you will see that it was you who got 'personal' by your attack on Seamus and Matt. I was simply defending organisers who I think have done a good job for us in organising good terrier and lurcher events at our shows. I did not claim to know every terrierman in Ireland - I know some but not all. Dave Roberts may be well known in terrier circles but I had not come across him. But if I don't know someone I do ask about them from someone who does and in this case I passed on your suggestion for a ju -

This year in response to criticism of our event organisers, our judges and our prize structure I made a large personal commitment to the terier & lurcher events and a commitment to address all of these criticisms. Through working with the organising club club , Foxgun Tom, Sponsors and our Fair Directors we have put in place a prestigious championship whereby the top Irish terriers can compete against top dogs from the UK for a great title and fantastic prizes on home soil. We have picked good judges , produced the best prize fund ever in Ireland and sited the event with good ringside par -

Fionn, What a diatribe and what a lot of inaccurate allegations you make because I defended our shows and the club who organise our terrier & lurcher events and had the temerity to criticise Mr Coonney. Some FACTS: 1. Adare - We were twinned with Adare which was a good little one day show in a lovely venue that attracted about 6-10,000 people compared to well over 30,000 at Shanes this year. Ask anyone who was at Shanes this year or look for yourself at the www.fieldsports.tv programme this year or the wwww.countrysportschannel.tv last year. Adare had virtually no UK stands a -

Ditch, You started off what has been an interesting and at times stormy debate but if nothing else it has publicised our event and from the number of personal calls and emails I have had it has stimulated massive interest. Interesting that virtually all of these have been in support of us and the concepts of the events out of several dozen calls only one has been abusive. It is sad that people who criticise our event organisers and our shows do so on the basis of ignorance about our events and not personal experience. I prefer to deal in FACTS and objective assessments by people wh -

Tully, Good to hear from you again - of course I can't be at your show or any other show on Saturday because I have Birr the following week. I did offer you and all other shows some prizes through this forum but you didn't take it up. Even at this late stage I am prepared to email you some subscriptions to the magazine for your top winners. To be frank even I wasn't involved in organising Birr it is likely I would be somewhere else, I have a large range of sporting interests including gundogs, game and rough shooting, running a small shoot, stalking and target shooting so my Saturday -

At last someone coming forward with an answer to the challenge. I agree that Dessie has probably done more in the ring than Seamus and with more dogs but I think Seamus would have killed many more foxes than Des. I respect both of them as guys who have not been afraid to mix it with the best dogs in the UK and prevail. But Seamus did win Stoneleigh with a working dog. Equivalent to me winning Best in Show at Crufts with a working golden. I was glad to be able to heal the rift between them this year and Des is judging for the club at Birr. Any other suggestions as to anyone else wh -

Neil, The main difference between gundogs and working terriers is they are much harder to train! And of course I just don't claim that my dogs are good workers I am prepared to actually test them in working competition when I have one good enough - hopefully after an absence from competition (but not from work) I think I have currently one such in training! I will always be loyal to people who have done a good job for me as Seamus and Matt have and make no apology for defending them or in defending the status and reputation of our shows and events which have been objectively assessed b -

I have seen Seamus work his dogs on my shoot and other places. He has managed to create the ideal for working terrier shows - dogs that look good, have good confirmation, and are fit for purpose. His reputation in NI for dealing with fox problems is legendary. AND he has won at the highest level in shows all over the UK. What has Mr Cooney done - he judged at the recent Fair at Ballinlough - WOW! What a recommendation for one's CV. Incidently he has totally misquoted me as I did not write the article what I said on this forum and what I stand over and to which Mr Cooney responded was : -

Neil, Once again you totally duck the challenges and again throw inaccurate and defamatory material into the mix. 1. I have never run a show at the Ardoyne Airfield. 2. I helped BASC run an event at Ards Airfield in Newtownards - it was run under their banner but I stepped in to help sort things out. If anyone looks at a map if you travelled to Ards Airfield through the Ardoyne ( in North Belfast) you must have taken an extremely scenic detour of about 40/50 miles out of the normal route! It would appear that since Ardoyne has been unfortunately in the news you would wish to associat -

Neil, We appear to be covering old ground. I have seen Seamus at work and I know the excellent reputation he had for foxing. It might be before your time but his name was and still is legendary for fox control amongst farmers and even expperienced keepers in NI. I have met many farmers at shows and in my travels about the country who swear by him and call him to control foxes. Even DC Kinney who has worked terriers a lifetime and no great fan of Seamus had to admit 'he was the best'. And one had only to see how he was received in the keepers tent at Ballywalter to see how good his reputati -

Neil, If you think Moira is the best Fair in Ireland then I think you have demonstrated a severe lack of judgement - have you never been to Shanes Castle? Last year it set a record for attendance and the number and quality of its stands and competitions. This year it went even further ahead and set a record attendance for any game or country fair in Ireland ever. In my professional opinion and I think I know rather more about shows and event organising than you, and of course we survey everyone, not just seek the opinion of someone with an axe to grind - the current show rankings as expre -

Neil, What I said and what I can stand over is : The main officials of the Mid Antrim Terrier Club have a reputation second to none for what they have achieved both in and out of the ring. Take Seamus, for example, has anyone in Ireland dealt with more foxes or is more knowledgable about foxes or terriers? What terrierman in Ireland has won the top UK titles and been invited to judge at the top shows? Or bred as good a dogs? I have to say most of the criticism I have seen on this forum has been from people complaining that they haven't been successful because the judging has been rigged. -

Neil, Thanks for your input but once again and I agree with your perspective on Game Fairs but you raise the 'hare' once again implying problems with the organisers of the main show. I would like to make the following points; 1. The Mid Antrim Terrier & Lurcher Club have organised more successful shows throughout Ireland than any other club but apart from providing the qualifier and one of the main ring stewards they do not have a major involvement in the Five Nations. This has been organised by Tom, myself and Fran in consultation with show organisers such as the Mid Antrim
