New International Lurcher Events

Fionn, I would be disappointed if I didn't hear from you! I really do hope we get a chance to meet some time. I am not involved in terrier & lurchers myself and rarely have a free Saturday to look at other sports - hence I do not go to terrier & lurcher shows anywhere. If I do have a free Saturday this year I am going to run my bitch in gundog tests and I do hope to take in Mourne as it is near to me. If you are running a show it is unlikely that I would get to it unless I was in the south - I do go down every month so I might hit lucky. BUT I have never refused any or -

Kegs. The club have set it at €5 and made the concession of effectively free racing on Saturday and I have matched this with the two day offer. I am afraid thats it for 2011. Albertj thanks for the answer albert im not out hunting you or anything, some of the suggestions are a bit mad on here like but what do ya do,though would it not of made more sense for you and everyone to keep the two days seperate as youd of done better and took less flak ie saturday 3 euro per dog to race half to be split as prize half to the organizer, sunday 3 euro per dog per class usual prizes, every -

Lee, I do believe in being courteous and answering people's posts but your posts veer off in so many inconsistent directions that it is hard to keep up with them. I don't mind criticism but I can't always follow your logic. If we didn't have stands of course we wouldn't have a show - it is an equal truism that if the stands didn't do well at our events they would not come back. Our exhibitors are very happy with our shows as we give them a very fair deal and they know that no-one goes the extra mile for publicity and on our publicity and advertising spend than we do. In general the pub -

Albert while your in an answering mode Just Hunting mentions gate receipts which you answered You never answered my question about how much stall holders are charged to stand at a show? or the ice cream, burger van and generally catering vans? all this money your taking and your making a loss no business runs at a loss for long. Y.I.S Leeview Leeview, You appear to have a remarkable interest in our fairs - perhaps you are thinking of joining the massive gravy train you think exudes from game fairs. I did not say that we did not make a profit ( and any profit made is not ma -

Dukie, That is the decision of those show organisers but what we have CONCENTRATED ON and will continue to do so is to give the terrier & lurchers their proper place amongst the other competitions with now equivalent or better competition prize structure while at the same time offering them a two shows for the price of one concession for Ballywalter and Shanes Castle. £10 for two events - can anyone tell me what game or country fairs offer terrier & lurcher owners ACTUALLY ENTERING the Fairs better admission rates? For Shanes and Birr we also offer Terrier & Lurcher owne -

Springer, We do have new judges every year and it is good to have a mix of UK & Irish judges. It would be a nightmare to work with a new and possibly untried club every year. The fair is a massive co-ordination undertaking and it is good to have teams in place who have demonstrated they can do the job efficiently and have proper documentation and insurance in place. In short that I can leave a lot of the organisation to them. Our team is small and we can't be everywhere at once. There may well be other clubs who could do it just as well but (1) they have never approached us and (2 -

Deemac, I had a meeting with the Mid Antrim Terrier & Lurcher Club yesterday and we hammered out what I think is a package of 'improved terms' for terrier & lurcher enthusiasts. To be frank while some have thought the €5 a class was steep - it still is much cheaper than any other competition at the fair. And the entrant has the choice of how many dogs he or she enters and in how many classes they enter them. What I was trying to do in the discussions was to arrive at a compromise where the BASIC cost of competing and admission to the fair was reduced whereby someone could ru -
I have had a meeting with the Mid Antrim Club over ways to reduce the cost of terrier & lurcher participation at the Irish Game & Country Fair at Birr Castle on the 27th & 28th August 2011. The following has been decided: Saturday racing : All racing will be run as a sweepstake. Fees will be €2 per entry with the winner in the Whippers, Terriers , Under and over 23" lurchers will take ALL of the entry money in that paricular class. I will also provide a tankard for the winners and the club will provide rosettes for winner & runner up. AND all people running dogs o

WD, Des gets away with this because he adds strong dogs to the title! Seriously we recognise that Des runs good events and that is why he is hosting a Master Mc Grath Challenge and Five Nations International Lurcher Championship heat at his show. We now have qualifiers at Johnny Dicker's Show on the 1st May , Also Ballywalter Game Fair on the 1st May, Des on the 7th and Mourne on the 15th May. Florencourt will also host a qualifier at the end of May. We have Scottish, North & South of England and Welsh qualifiers in place but could take a couple more. AND we would like one or two m

Ferreter, thanks for the vote for Shanes Castle. BUT Ballywalter is now 'under new management' and virtually everyone agreed that 2010, when we took it over, was the best for several years. This year we have moved it up to two days and added in a lot of new attractions AND if you pay your entrance fee to Ballywalter you get a FREE ticket to Shanes.

Liverpool artist David Prescott underook the challenging task of painting the first winner of the Five Nations International Terrier Championship. He is pictured here presenting the portrait of the winner to owner Danny Sykes. David, an internationally recognised artist, of everything from birds of prey to big game will be present at all three Great Game Fairs of Ireland. Your dogs may not win the top prizes but they can still be immortalised by David.

LF, With regard to gundogs both happen. There are team events which are pre qualified such as our International team event at Shanes where this year we will have teams from the ROI , NI, Ulster Select , Wales and Holland. All have had a pre qualifying hear in their own juridiction so are given free tickets as part of their qualifying prize. If you read my initial post you will see that a similar proposal is made for our pre qualifying lurcher events except that they win FOUR free tickets. Then of course there are gundog events that are entered on the day which are not pre qualified. They -

Dee, Sorry not ignoring you. I intend to address your query with Seamus when I next see him. I repeat that I or the other directors do not get any of the class entry fees But even at €5 per class this is less expensive than the gundogs or clays entries and similar to the angling. I do not ask any of the organising clubs what they do with the money but do encourage them to use it for development of the sport or at least make a donation to charity. Last year FISSTA ( angling) raised over €4,000 from the magazine/fair and ALL of that was put straight into developing thie schools -

Y.I.S Leeview Lee, I will certainly look at any ideas you have for a working lurcher event. We do have a speed event for gundogs - it's called a scurry. AND if you want to walk about outside a game fair for FREE I am happy to let you do so! BUT for those genuine country sports people who want a good day out at a game or country fair and the chance to compete for good prizes I don't think there are any better admission prices than ours to be had in the UK or Ireland. Fionn, In general I have enjoyed our robust exchanges and have acted on some of your positive suggestions. To answer your three points: 1. I was at the terrier lurcher rings at Birr on Sunday four times myself - as anyone who was actually there can confirm. Were you there? I did not see any problems and non were reported to the garda who were present or our security staff. A report of a pup being stolen was made to me. That was the only problem reported DURING the fair. If problems are not reported we cannot deal with them. I had reports of people being hassled made AFTER the fair. I
