Lurcher 330 The two classes are as advertised KC registered and Unregistered Whippets. I think this is an advance on having just one class for 'Whippets'. It is up to the club to decided what is a whippet on the day. This is the way it will be run this year but we have discussed classifying them by weight/height for future events. Your suggestions are welcome. AlbertJ will the showing be the same because if so there is no reason why the terriers should not be the same so that say the border terriers and Lakelands should have to show their papers on the day to enter their class and if

Casso, Thanks for your comment but we offer prize money for all of our other competitions. Are you really saying that terrier, whippet and lurcher people can't compete fairly, or with good sportsmanship say like gundog guys or clay shooters. I would be extremely disappointed if this was the case. In fact with the Master Mc Grath final where there a large prize was at stake I was greatly impressed by the sportsmanship demonstrated by the three finalists and I have to say especially by Shane Lee who had travelled the furthest and had two dogs qualified which came 3rd and 4th and was out

Thanks - the Roscrea Club are a very keen bunch of lads ( and young guys and ladies of course) and I hope they get your support. I should have said all dogs racing must be muzzled and that the race track will be securely fenced off in the interests of safety to spectators and dogs. Shane's a nice bloke i'd say him and the lads will do a great job at Birr ,they put on a good show themselves in Roscrea last year it's a pity it was'nt on this year Shane and the Roscrea team are very keen and open to new ideas and I look forward to working with them to develop the racing side of Birr

UTB, Thanks for your post. You obviously feel strongly about this and I respect that. I think it was you who made the suggestion to me about an 'elite class ' for lurcher racing and as you can see we have started to take this on board albeit again in an interim fashion. As you have guessed I put my own viewes in a forthright fashion and I don't mind others putting theirs in a similar manner. BUt I think it is better all round if you decide to criticise something you make a suggestion how to improve it. As I said to Speedy above this is an interim measure for Birr only to see how it goes.

Speedy, The shows have been running for years - and if you recall very few were run before we started to run them from 1980! I have spoken to many people about the whippet controversy and there is a large thread on K9 about it. Far from getting friendly with some of the KC only whippet fraternity you can see that I had very robust conversations with a few. I have taken advice from people with KC registered whippets and those with unregistered whippets. We discussed a number of possible solutions with the organising club. I don't dictate to the club runing the events I make sugge

Speedie, Can you make your point a bit clearer. We have no plans to make the whippet racing KC only as this would exclude many owners. We may refine these classifications in the future eg we would intend to possibly break the novice class down by type. BUT IF YOU WANT TO IMPLEMENT CHANGE YOU HAVE GOT TO START SOMEWHERE. THIS IS THE START OF A PROCESS NOT THE END! As you are probably aware there were a number of views expressed on the K9 Lurcher forum about what way we should define whippets for our racing. We took account of these and other consultations when we discussed the final cla

I have been on the 'Game Fair Scene' for 34 years and introduced many of the attractions that are now standard at any show. The reason why our shows continue to grow is because of our innovation and I will not be put of introducing new events and ideas by people who are almost wholly negative. In consultation with a wide number of people we have come up with some new classes to give people more choice. As I say this is an evolving process and we will take cognisance of all sensible suggestions for other changes. . Why can't you come up with a positive input to the discussion and help evol

Perhaps you would share what you don't like about this. Yes, a lot of thought and discussion did go into this to try to give a range of events in which the widest range of people could compete for good prizes and to try to give good value for money in terms of admission to what will be a really good Irish game fair. It is part of an evolving programme to try to extend the opportunities for people to race their dogs like against like and to actually spread the prizes around a bit. Of course I like to have premium events like the Master Mc Grath and Five Nations with big prizes just as w

Wednesday 27th July saw the press reception staged in Birr Castle to launch the final fair of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland series. Lord & Lady Rosse hosted the reception in the castle and it was great to see both mix with the wide range of anglers, shooters, gundog, equestrian, hunting and terrier & lurcher enhusiasts. Representatives of the three main sporting bodies in the South were there to throw their weight and the support of their organisations behind Ireland's national Game Fair which will take place on the 27th & 28th August. Amongst the many attractive and varied exhibits at the Irish Game and Country Fair at Birr Castle Co Offaly the major display by the NARGC, Ireland's largest shooting organisation, must take pride of place : NARGC RETURNS TO THE IRISH GAME & COUNTRY FAIR AT BIRR, CO OFFALY The NARGC will again be a major exhibitor at the Irish Game & Country Fair which takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday, 27th and 28th August respectively, in Birr Castle Demesne. NARGC will have a stand where officers and staff of the Association will be on hand to offer expert advice on all facets o

Be good to see you at Birr - as you can see we have put together some discounted packages for admission but like everyone else our margins have been squeezed for the last two years through working out packages with exhibitors on one hand and greatly increased costs on the other. Traders are hurting a lot BUT we have asked all traders to have at least one bargain offer on their stand and as we have a good range of traders booked in there should be plenty of bargains to be had. Unlike Ballinough we have the support of the NARGC ( with a huge stand) and FISSTA as well as CAI, IFA Countrysid

Jigsaw, I don't want to diminish the annoyance caused to you in any way by anyone hassling you but I would not like people to get the idea that the fair was overun by people hassling others about selling their dogs. There was absolutely no trouble at all on the main site and the problems that were reported after the event appeared to centre on a group of c 12 guys trying to buy dogs and appeared localised to the terrier & lurcher area. Only one report was made to anyone at the time ( was the stolen puppy) and that includes our stewards, securoity staff, Garda, our terrier and lurcher

Jigsaw, As I said at the time although there was no actual problems last year except for one puppy being reported stolen and post fair reports of some people feeling hassled by people asking them to sell their dogs, we would take action and we have. We will not allow dogs to be sold on site and this will be signed at the gate. We will have a security presence in the area and it is up to anyone who feels in any way hassled to report it to them , to fair HQ or myself. But please DO THIS AT THE FAIR and NOT AFTERWARDS. There will be a special car parking area for competitors.

IL, We have been taking account of feedback from the forum for some time on prizes, competitions, judges and had been working on some price combinations to try to give extra value as we did with the 'two shows for the price of one' ticket offer for our NI shows. But costs are up virtually all round for show organisers and revenue from stands and sponsors is down so there is only certain amount of flexibility on the gate if shows are to continue to grow or even survive. Final meeting on judges next week. For lurchers we will have four judges - three for the Five Nations Championship ( w

Charlene, We were delighted to help out with a little sponsorship for such a worthy cause. I hope you are blessed with good weather and a great turnout AND raise plenty of money for your charity. Sorry I can't be there as I hope to compete in a gundog test that day but I trust Bluebell will capture it on film for the forums and the magazine. Alberj -

The 2nd Annual Master McGrath Challenge
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Martin, Thanks for your sporting post. Your two suggestions will be taken on board . I suggested the 200 FOR THE FINAL at SHANES as I thought the 150 gave the small dogs the advantage as would standardising the qualifying distance. Also all potential qualifying shows have different distances and I think the Master Mc Grath should really be part of the normal racing. The distance at Birr has still to be worked out with Shane Lee. But I hope you all give Shane your support as he takes over the racing. I thought by starting the ball rolling again at Birr it would give lurcher enthu -
GOLFERS!!!!!!!!! No better way of ruining a walk in the country than playing Cross Country Hockey. Saying that some of them courses would make some excellent sites for a Country Fair. On a more serious note I'm off to The Northants Country Fair this weekend, as a punter for a change, to show my Mum what all the fuss is about. And if she's up to it (going through Chemo at the moment) get her to show her Jack Russell. Definately NOT in a working dog category though. Barrie Wade deserves a great deal of credit fir alerting me to the fact that there was no lobbying going on on the dock
