  1. The problem is that some people know what the breeding of their dogs are, and not being whippets, they have raced them as whippets. As for Paris and Ernie their owners know they are not whippets yet raced them as whippets. I have nothing against Martin or Deidre so i'm not personally attacking them. A lot depends on how the show is worded when advertised. Tango is right that it needs to be sorted out before the showing and racing season comes around or it'll still be debated about after every show. At the All Irelands this year the biggest racing class was the whippet class with approx. 6 or
  2. Martin, Our attempt to split the whippets at Birr led to some criticism of you and you sportingly offered to return the prize BUT as I said then the classification that we listed at Birr was to include ' Non ped' whippets so you were quite entitled to run. I notice Tango has listed an under 21 class - is this the way to go for 'Non ped whippets' with the other classification/race for pure bred whippets? albert
  3. UTB, I have had no response from Non Ped owners as to how many want to race - either PM or public ( I can understand this) so it would appear there may be little or no point in putting on a race for them. So should we simply revert to your suggestion of running KC Registered and non registered whippets together? Comments please from KC registered owners. Albert
  4. UTB The problem that could arise is that someone could present one of these dogs as an un reg whippet. What do you suggest then or are you saying we should run a race for KC registered whippets only and everything else in a say under 21"? Albert
  5. PTB , We have accepted that a non ped whippet i.e a whippet with greyhound blood is not the same as a KC registered whippet but I have highlighted the difficulty with distinguishing between un registered and non ped whippets. Albert
  6. albert could you tell me what a non ped whippet is please . Personally I would have taken the KC view which would be anything that its owner claimed was a whippet but was unregistered. Only KC registered whippets can be shown at a KC show. And since there appears to be a strong demand for it we will have a race restricted to them. However we want to be as inclusive as possible and do not wish to penalise people who have purchased unregistered dogs for working and/or have failed to register their dogs AND those who have purchased working/racing dogs of unkown breeding described
  7. FLASH, Lesley is correct. This year we had simply decided to try classifying dogs in the Novice Challenge with other dogs of similar breeding in the heats ( albeit with a good prize for winning against dogs of their own type of breeding) and then racing three different bred types in the final. Our first attempt at this will be at Ballywalter. If it goes well we may look at extending this to the Open Racing for winning dogs possibly at ahanes this year but if not in 2013. Albert
  8. HBH, Thanks for your input. We can finalise name for third classification but I think most people know what we mean whether it be Sighthound/long dog . Thankfully I won't be classifying any dog personally that will be up to the race organisers but a terrier cross lurcher could bring in a bull cross. Certainly the bull cross that won the Five Nations Show Ch at Birr last year looked as if it could be fairly quick. Overall our objective is to let the greatest number of people race their dogs and as far as possible like with like. AND then possibly race against other types. Sugg
  9. For 2012 we would intend to classify just the novice dogs but if it works well we will also look at classifying dogs who have won races in order to give owners who like a particular type of dog for working a chance to be in the prizes at the racing. I have also seen some pretty nippy terrier bred lurchers and it was a fine performance for the terrier bred lurcher to win the Five Nations Showing title. Albertj
  10. hey flash i was grateful for that wee ditch a few years back only for it i doubt if i would have won...some dogs could not handle it...it explains how i got up to win after being 6 lengths behind at half way! Before anyone thinks the Shanes Castle race track resembles a 'simulated' course with ditches to jump etc. What is being referred to as a 'ditch' is actually a dip. Albertj
  11. As I said in earlier posts and on other threads our full programme for the lurcher, whippet and terrier events at our three Game Fairs will be published when we have our final arrangements in place. This is in line with our policy of promoting only what will actually be there at our fairs and not publishing apparent 'wish lists'. 1. I made the decision to run the The Master Mc Grath Final over 150 yards after full discussions with a number of people. It was judged to be a distance that would bring large and smaller dogs together as fairly as possible. The results appeared to confirm our de
  12. the reason it was only 150yrds is because two different lures on the day quit working....and the one that they finally used had to be shortened,as the line snaped...the final was re-run as it quit before the line, id like to see the racing over 400yrds, it would suit my lad perfect the longer the better! but why could it not be run the same distance as the all ireland which was run shortly after? i believe it was run over the same distance this year as the mastermcgrath , but i could be wrong.....the all irelands usely over 250yrds at least... As I said earlier our full proposals
  13. The Angling Ireland Show is on in Dublin at the IKC HQ at Swords this weekend Saturday & Sunday www.irelandanglingexpo.ie We have a stand to promote the Great Game Fairs of Ireland and the Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine . Philip Lawton will be on the stand on Saturday and Irene and I will cover it on the Sunday. If you are there do call in and see us. Albertj
  14. Sammy, I hope I answered your questions as I am always willing to listen to anyone about how our events can best deliver what enthusiasts want from them. However many people make their views known to me by pming me with ideas and suggestions and both these suggestions and more public feedback is considered. Our objective is to make our events provide the widest possible opportunities for people to compete fairly for a good range of prizes. Last year we provided a new range of trophies throughout the show and generally feedback was positive about these , we also provided some prestige priz
  15. CarraghG, Since no one has answered you - I wiil. The answer is Birr went very well. Great range of stands - best yet; excellent crowds, great competitions with good prizes and great weather, Thanks to Shane and his team; our own security team and a vet and assistant on site - we had absolutely no problems whatsoever and peace and tranquility was the roder of the day in the terrier & lurcher area! In short just as I said it would be! We try to address any problems that are reported to us and in 2011 we did. albertJ
  16. I will be posting details of what will be happening at each of the fairs when we have the prize structure complete and the judges in place. The track at each venue will be wired off , as at Birr, to prevent any spectator., wandering on to it during racing. It will be up to the organising club to decide whether people can stand back from the lure and catch their dogs or not. Our directors were very happy with the way the Rosccrea Club ran the racing and helped steward the terrier & lurcher show rings in order that everything ran very smoothly. Everyone else to whom I spoke said they
  17. Sammy, Happy to answer the questions as best I can at this time. Firstly the Rosscrea Club are only running the racing and showing at Birr. Matt Lee Snr & Jnr - no relations - are running the events at Ballywalter & Shanes. We have always alllowed club members of the organising club to run their dogs in the racing as the racing is a performance test and not based on personal preference. It is similar to all the other performance related events at our fairs i.e club members of the gundog clubs running the gundog tests can and do enter their dogs ; clay shooters from the orga

  19. Janet, Thanks for your response. I hope to have a mix of cash and prizes for this years's events. Albert
  20. Janet, Janet, I may have drawn the wrong inference from your post " the main problem areas seemed to be the races where prize money was involved". But you have raised an interesting point on prizes on which I would like yours and others' opinions - what would the TLW enthusiasts want as prizes? Albert
  21. Janet, I introduced prize money to bring the terrier, lurchers and whippet competitions into line with our other competitions as we were receiving criticism that the terrier, lurcher and whippet prizes as supplied by the Mid Antrim Club ( although paid for by us) made TLW enthusiasts the 'poor relations' of the shows. Having responded positively to this, at quite a considerable cost to us, you now appear to be saying this is not what TLW owners want. Our current plans discussed at a planning meeting this morning do include an extended prize fund ( cash & product) and also addi
  22. We have a meeting of our terrier & lurcher group on Monday but a lot of work has already been done by them and some other terrier and lurcher enthusiasts to make them even better than 2011. Currently working on final prize structure but will be enhanced at all of our fairs this year. Last year the basic prize for a show class was a good quality trophy and rosette. The top prize at Shanes Castle for the Master Mc Grath included £500, a Barbour Coat and a painting of the dog. A similar prize structure was in place for the Five Nations Lurcher Championships at Birr Castle Fair. This y
  23. Ash, We are hoping ro run a heat at the Fair- have to discuss with Lord D and farm manager. Currently working on a range of new attractions, prize fund and new stands for Ballywalter including a major artisan food & drink fair in the courtyard sponsored and organised by Flavour magazine. Full details on the Ballywalter Fair on our website soon. Albert
  24. We are just finalising our main prize funds and judges for the shows. Good mix of judges from Ireland and UK planned. I believe that we should not only bring in competent judges from the Uk but also encourage our own judges from Ireland. The prize fund for the Shanes Castle event, our 50th Irish Game or country fair, has already surpassed anything ever seen in Ireland and both Ballywalter and Birr will also have enchanced prize funds. All three shows have excellent areas for terriers and lurchers within the fairs and as you can see from this thread we have addressed the recession by offerin
