Ireland Irish Game Fair at Shanes - Prizes
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
at least 1 year old, but sure is puppy class not for 1 year olds and younger, so if the winner of puppy class is 1 year old exactly then would it not be old enough to be a fine example of its breed type. is this the way all shows work the puppy winner does not be in the final along with all the other class winners of its breed. Whatever classification you put in there will always be a borderline. In the case of a pup exactly one year old it would not be elegible for the puppy class which is for dogs UNDER 1 year. If you have a pup which you think is good enough to go on to best of show w -

Ireland Irish Game Fair at Shanes - Prizes
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
The reason is that as you know pups especially of mixed breeds often look much different when they are fully grown. A puppy that looks well balanced at 6 months can be totally out of balance when it is fully mature and vice versa. Any dog being crowned All Ireland Champion should be a fine example of its breed type and in our opinion to enure this the dog needs to be at least 1 year old. Albertj -

Steven, They are elgible to run in the All Ireland - We have always wished to have the All Ireland Championships open to all so that anyone winning them can say they are the All Ireland Champion no one having been excluded from competing - but of course these dogs in the MMcG will have had the 'handicap' of having run at least once already and the two races are at different distances . The Master Mc Grath over 150 and the All ireland over at least 250. Albert -
Ireland Irish Game Fair at Shanes - Prizes

As this is our 25th All Ireland Championships staged at our 50th Irish Game Fair , since we launched the Game Fair concept in Ireland in 1978, we have pulled out all of the stops to make this a memorable event. This includes bringing judges from Scotland, introducing new events including Derek Davidson's Terrier Roadshow and offering the best prize fund ever for an Irish event. I thank my fellow directors for allowing me to commit this investment into the terrier, whippet and lurcher events and I trust it will be reciprocated by good sportsmanship on the day. PLEASE NOTE: Only the Master -
how can he judge a working whippet. We think it is best to put judges names up in advance of the show and not surprise people on the day. If someone has a particular problem with a judge they can choose as to whether to bring a dog to show under him or her. For our 25th All Ireland and 50th Game Fair we have chosen to bring judges in from Scotland to try to avoid the criticism that is often levelled against local juges. They are all fresh faces and so I would suggest as Den says see how they judge before making any comments. You have posed the question about the whippet judge about ho

i dont know the man hope that he will do a good job.but i think they should bring in working judges they would get a better crowd. Twiggy, As someone who has worked his dogs (both working and show bred) and has had their work assessed having won with my dogs in actual trials and tests and at the highest level in the showring AND who judges I really would not want to show a dog under someone whose only qualification was ' he works his dogs'. That is not a qualification for judging - it may not even be an assessment that the person is competent to train a dog for work. To judge a show

Kegs, we were happy to help Tango out with prizes for the show and the lamp was one of them. This lamp and similar ones are available from Wildunter www.wildhunter.eu. You can either purchase one there or try to win one at Shanes Castle or Birr Castle events! Albertj -

Sam, I appreciate you wrote to me out of geunuine concern for terrier work but I was concerned that the information you passed on about bills to ban it going through the Dail and Stormont was inaccurate. We have checked widely through government sources and CAI in NI and NARGC in the south. There are no bills coming forward at present. Des Crofton said " There is no such legislation proposed to my knowledge either North or South. He is probably referring to the Animal Health & Welfare Bill in the South which is currently going through the Senate and will then move on to the Dai

Samm, You said 'there is a bill being proposed to ban the use of dogs for hunting in both north and south of Ireland'. I fear this MAY happen but I have checked with various sources including CAI and it would appear there is nothing currently planned for the North and nothing really that specific in the South. HOWEVER that is not to say it won't come and the time to mobilise is before it happens not when it happens. BUT I feel that the organisation needs to be set up to include lurchers & whippets and it needs to be the right organisation. The magazine and fairs stand by to support th

Thanks Sam. I met Mark at Ballywalter - he has quite a few good ideas.I did say I would help him if I could. Regarding RISE we have a report from Des Crofton in our latest magazine on the current focus of RISE. But while I think there may be a bill proposed at Stormont regarding hunting with dogs I have not heard anything about this - where did this information come from in order that we can get our magazine editor on to it? We have to be careful to make sure such information is accurate. Albert

Sam We are always willing to help organisations and clubs if they seek our help and we are very active ourselves in lobbying MLAs, MPs and Ministers. As far as I am aware I do not think there are actually bills to ban hunting with dogs either North or South but personally I feel they may be coming. I know that a young guy was trying to set up a working terrier federation but I did not know it was actually set up. Basically we put our money/sponsorship where we think it does most good and throw quite a lot of weight behind those people who we think can deliver. But with money in s

Chid, I think they will all do a good job. Both Den and Derek have visited Ireland before. Den to run his lurcher in the Master McGrath at Shanes last year - he is so enthusiastic that he came in late Friday night and went back Saturday night to run his own show on the Sunday! Derek came across to show his terrier in the Five Nations Terrier Championships at Birr two years ago. They are all looking forward to judging at this historical event - the 25th All Ireland Championships at our 50th Irish Game Fair. Albertj

Ireland Half Price Tickets to Shanes Castle
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
These guys have demonstrated that when half a dozen guys who are enthusiastic about their sport feel that the government have pushed them too far that they should push back. They have pushed back hard and by doing so caught the imagination of the fishing world and made government listen. As you know we try to support as many events and organisations as we can even if its just a token gesture. This year I had committed our major sponsorship to FISSTA's young anglers project but when I saw how passionate these guys were about their sport I felt we had to help them. Now if you want a half pri- 1 reply

Judges for 25th All Ireland Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher Championships Shanes Castle Sunday 8th July Start 12.30 sharp In line with our policy of publishing the judges names in advance of our events and because of huge number of people who have contacted me to see the judges before they make plans to attend I have decided to release these now rather than wait for our full launch in Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine and general press on the 12th June. All other details including the BEST ever Irish prize structure for Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher competitions will be released th

Dare I say this discussion illustrates what is wrong with this forum or really the people who come on to it to 'bitch' or give their opinion in an agressive and personalised fashion, and 'hands up' I have been guilty myself for re-acting to some of the comments in a less than objective fashion.. As I said there were some good points made on a potential welfare issue for dogs jumping but Ian appeared to take them on board and as only a few dogs appeared to take part and none appeared to be injured then it was all rather hypothetical. The problem arose because the posts became more perso -
Should have said in spite of rumours that I plan to retire this year having completed 50 fairs, I have already put in place venues and dates for our events in 2013. Watch this space for some exciting new developments!

Bri, Just 34 years of fairs and hopefully still learning and improving! First gundog tests, clay shooting competitions and casting competitions and demos from then World Champion in 1979. First display of guns in 1980 after quite a lot of trouble persuading police to allow. First terrier and lurcher show staged at the fair in 1980 by the Ulster Game & Wildfowl Society. First air rifle range in 1981 also catapult range which isn't with us anymore in 1982. First jousting staged in 1980. First Gundog scurry run in 1980. First Strong man contest staged in 1982.
