In spite of facing the worst that the 'Irish Summer' could throw at us the fair once again was a huge success. By far the largest and most successful event of its kind in the south of Ireland and with Shanes Castle Fair worthy of the title of one of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland. We had a great range of stands including many new sporting ones and a great range of gun, tackle and clothing stands, great competitions, good prizes and magnificent support from the major sporting organisations. Sunday hit a record attendance for any game or country fair in Ireland with superb support for our comp

Talk about WNM - what an absolutely silly statement - €15 is of very little interest to me! And as for cheating we do not allow or encourage cheating. We had an objection system in place at shanes as we will have at Birr - No one made any formal complaint or put down the £25 deposit to do so so no one obviously felt strongly enough to complain about cheating there and then. We only take complaints on the day and if someone has the balls to make them under their own name. We don't take complaints from people who make complaints from behind an alias - that icludes WNM and BB! Albertj -
Great to see the IWTF there and great to have you judging . Big rings mown and rolled and looking forward to a good entry. albertj

Looking forward to seeing you all -especially my favourite ladies ( and husbands of course - in case Irene is reading this!). Lurcher course mown & rolled - not quite a billard table but as close as we can make it. Different location to last year but actually nearer the main fair. Easy access out through the farm so you don't have to go back up the main field as we are operating a one way system. Look out for the new signage - ENTRANCE AS NORMAL THROUGH GATEC. Ground for the show rings mown and rings rolled - They are in the same location as last year with plenty of ringside parkin

Ireland Change of Whippet Judge for Birr Game Fair
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
DB, I think he judged at Moira I don't know whether he judged at Ballinlough. Just like I judged quite a few open shows before I moved up to championship shows - Neil is moving up from smaller shows! Seriously as I have said before I do not have any problems with the sporting event organisers at Moira or Ballinlough in fact I am friendly with the gundog organisers, air rifkle organisers etc and have a lot of time for their terrier & lurcher organisers and have publicly congratulated them on their innovation to make their events different to those offered at our events. Ireland MOURNE ALL IRELAND DIGGING FINAL
AlbertJ replied to tango's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Tango, A big thank you for your innovative ideas on putting this fun event on - rather analagous to having our own countrysports strongman event . As someone who loves digging holes for trees and other earthworks - but who is obvously well past his best - I can appreciate the effort put in by the guys who have qualified - I particularly almost 'felt' the jar of the bars and spades when they hit some good solid Mourne rock as I have similar ground ! We are always delighted to support such innovative ideas and I think we can promise you some softer earth in Co Offaly! Albertj -
Ireland RISE to stage RALLY at BIRR GAME FAIR
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
RISE and we have agreed another press release issued to all of the media in both Ireland and the Uk by Paul Pringle ( Editor of our magazine) and the RISE Press Officer. It is a challenge to the media to compare our crowds with the ARAN rally and also a CHALLENGE to our people to come out. Release reads as follows: "BIRR FAIR ORGANISER CONFIDENT OF DEMONSTRATING THAT THE MAJORITY OF IRISH PEOPLE SUPPORT REAL RURAL CONSERVATION RATHER THAN EMOTIVE APPEALS ON ANIMAL RIGHTS ISSUES. While Ireland’s biggest Game Fair at Birr, Co Offaly on 25th and 26th August is set to attract many te -
Here is photo of the normal ARENA crowds at the Irish Game & Country Fair at Birr. Now let us have the target of having an even bigger crowd to receive the representatives of the various organisations from RISE. If we can get a larger crowd outside of the arena and the arena filled it will send a very powerful message to politicians.

Ireland Prize Structure at Birr Game Fair
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Paul Reynolds has replaced Tom Quinn who had to pull out for family reasons - we hope to have Tom as judge at one of our future shows. An additional prize has been added for Overall Champion in the ROI Championship Show on Sunday - A Jack Murphy gents or ladies coat. AND for the MOURNE DIGGING CHAMPIONSHIPS ALL COMPETITORS WILL RECEIVE A SPECIALLY EMBROIDERED CAP. As will the qualified competitors who turn up for the FIVE NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS. These are sponsored by the Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine and Wildebeest Embroidery who will be exhibiting their products at th -
Ireland Change of Whippet Judge for Birr Game Fair

Margaret, We are very grateful to Paul for stepping in at short notice and to our other judges Seamus for lurchers , Neil for terriers and Kieran, Steven and Pat for the Five Nations. I hope that competitors will take their decisions in a sporting fashion and that we can agree that its not just UK judges who can judge competently and fairly. Albertj -
Ireland RISE to stage RALLY at BIRR GAME FAIR
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Neil, Des has been and is a great defender of all countrysports - he is a real 'terrier' when he gets his teeth into anything that threatens country sports. We were honoured to give him our Brownlow award for the person who in the opinion of the editorial team of the magazine had done most for country sports in Ireland in the last year. We thought his work on taking on and defeating the government on the firearms issue warranted this alone but there was whole mass of other work that supported this. Albertj -
Unfortunately our whippet judge has had to withdraw from judging at Birr on Sunday 26th August. We are very grateful to Paul Reynolds for taking on the job at short notice and we hope whippet owners give him a fantastic entry. The show starts at 12.30 sharp after the Mourne Digging Championships. PLEASE NOTE : Terrier, Lurcher and whippet competitors enter through Gate C. Please note there will be different ( to normal) exiting arrangements to take pressure of the entrance. Exhibitors will exit at the bottom of the field rather than going back up the field . It will be well signposted
