My current lurcher was in the house for the first two years i had him, he'd had the run of the garden and house of the breeder, playing with his grandkids, he came "house trained" never did a thing, always let me know if he wanted to go out. He only once shit in the house, and he did it on the landing upstairs, the furthest point from his basket he could get at the time? I'm not saying he thought what he was doing was "dirty" but he knew it was wrong, his answer was to do it as far away from his personal space as possible i suppose? He's bad for rolling in shite, badger shite being his fav

Good post , dogs have a physical memory which means places things and smells evoke the same feeling it had the last time it encountered that "thing" , it relives from the past as a way of dealing with the present , dogs can't differentiate between inside pressure and external pressure, which is why it will investigate its own shit by smelling the same as it will investigate a strange object on a familiar walk by smelling It can relieve external pressure by relieving internal pressure

They don't like walking in it but love rolling in it?
-
But how can a dog know what dirty and what is clean , if it will actively go out and roll in fox shite or any filth crap it can find , would that not disgust it if it can tell the difference

How does the table shitting and dominance thing work bud , is it the your other dogs will think she's bigger that she is , if you leave your scent higher you must be higher off the ground Do you think the next dog that comes along will make the connection with the higher shite and understand the bitch is dominant ,???

A woman brought a terrier to me once that kept pissing in the bathroom floor at night even if it had been out and gone earlier, Thing was the bathroom wasn't an easy room to get to , eventually we got to the fact that as a pup she used to wash the pup in the shower in bathroom , the dog was petrified of going in bathroom generally but at night when the coast was clear it relieved the pressure of the incident but pissing in it , The table may have some emotional attachment to the pup ,

I think there are certain similar changes animals go through in the course of domestication but the major difference I feel was the harnessing of prey instinct of the wolf to work in conjunction with man to overcome large animals in the course of the hunt It's only in the last few generations where we have being breeding for social up to that stage we have only bred for working ability unlike the fox experiment which has bred for a puppy like state of friendliness in fact ia defensive mechanism A truly confident working dog will be social to a point but doesn't display a puppy like sta

Wonder With The Pup! Retrieve Not Up To Much
Casso replied to AlwaysRunning's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
training commands is easy once you create a desire for something in the dog , a ball a tug item whatever it is , it's training in the same frame of mind where the dog is usually running away from you in , but the pup must be managed so he can't get himself into trouble in the earlier months , A young dog is easier to work with once you haven't corrected him for misdemeanours growing up, a pup is more interested in something if he can fully express himself in it and that includes us , when we confront pups for biting or stock breaking whatever it is we put a kink into the bond, -
Wonder With The Pup! Retrieve Not Up To Much
Casso replied to AlwaysRunning's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My grandfather used to say " let a pup lie round for the first 10 months , I never paid much heed because I couldn't understand it , Folks are always trying to train pups early now as if there is some magical time span you have to have him doing stuff by or he'll be backward or wild and completely unsocial Pups are born social the trick is to keep them that way until drive kicks in , then We can start training in earnest , seems to be a lot of running dog owners focus on training early then feel pup is trained by 10 months and suddenly it all goes arse over tit and the reason for it is -
Nothing wrong with it at all , if you've done all you can to make life as comfortable as possible in the kennel , Once the dog gets to get out with you whenever possible it will gladly sit on its ass all day , it's just the getting over your guilt and the initial stage before the dog Gets with the plan , A dog only needs stimulation or we feel it does before it twigs that being in the kennels means it get to go out hunting , Energy conservation is the biggest calculator in a dog , a dog won't feck about wasting energy once it knows hunting is the best use for its energy There is

*bollOcks. lol Maybe that's the way he says it

Happy hunting to you too, thanks for your informed input ,

It does come from experience, the dogs experience of working with its owner , it's a pack a group mind , the dog learns to be in sync , what you don't want it don't want When we look deeper we find that the actual act of working a dog makes it social , the saluki an ancient breed can become a severely loyal bonded dog through work , not the other way round , have patience manage the mutt and the longer you work together the more social the dog will be , a dog don't need to be trained to listen or obey instructions , it become social through the hunt

I can't think of a worst place to have to recall , out in the middle of a field trying to be as quiet as you can , the dog chases and he comes back you don't need recall to work a dog on the lamp, From the time he was a pup out walking with me , I stop in my tracks , he goes on , stops and can't figure out what's going on , he can jump through hoops as far as I'm concerned but until he figures out to come back and stand beside me we go nowhere, once he's figured out to stand by my side is how things get moving again we have a silent recall , it's just practiced as a pup as an adult it's
-
It's not about buying dogs here there or anywhere else, it's not about teaching rules and instructions , it's about the dog wanting to be in sync with you , When you get to the stage where the mutt is second guessing you , knows what you want , knows by your reactions what's on the far end of the beam by the way you've just knocked it off , knows where your headed and when he's hissed on can be at the far end of the beam without the light , When it's gets to that stage bud there are no words needed
-
Dog don't need to learn any of that to work the lamp , you'll get a natural retrieve if the dog believes the sunshines out of your ass , recall is the last thing I want to do on the lamp , sit , stay leave not at all , dreaming you are

The best a dog can feel is when you let him out of the kennel everything else , is a man made belief of canine sucess, when you let him out he's jumpin round smiling , going apeshit and if I go out and we catch feck all as far as he's concerned he's still a winner because he got to go out and chase shit , If he feels sucess when he catches , why don't he jump round like earlier ,
-
Yeah we always want sucess first time out , seems that I dont , of course I do , but what is sucess , the dog trying really hard after been slipped or hissed on , taken 3/4 turns and the rabbit getting in , returning by my side and getting a Good lad , Does the dog know that is not sucess , Or is the dog returning to me with a bunny sucess and getting a Good lad, how can a dog judge sucess ffs, how does he know he's a sucess or failure and or how will I tell by his expression , a little curl of the lips or a turn down at the edges if he thinks he's a looser
-
I have no doubt if you had a certain signal or sound or word for squatters , a young dog would twig on quicker then just the normal hissing on sound on the lamp
-
if your saying that the dog lacked heart, sounds like a dog unfit for purpose and zero connection to entering , a dog entered in normal fashion , who just decides to jump ship comes down to bad breeding , how can you possibly avoid not catching every rabbit it run , you can't , If the minerals are there , they come to the fore , if the breeding is shit , you'll get a shit dog , whether you mollycoddle it or not,
-
Johnny I know where your coming from and understand the concept behind the process but playing devil advocate gets people thinking , we all want to get every dog the best start but in doing so sometimes we cut corners and introduce habits which are then hard to straighten out , Simple fact is the dog will catch , it's getting to that point with a well mannered obedient dog , where everyone involved hasn't got the overexcited about just the Catch
-
Your putting human concepts into the dogs head , can a dog run any faster if he's caught 1 or 50 , if the right elements are in the pup they will show in time , surely nobody is going to lamp a rabbit sitting beside a hedge if that's what your suggesting Is a dog going to run any faster because he's caught something , say your dog has caught 10 and mine has 1 will the sucess make your dog more conifident than mine of catching, ??ts drive that makes a dog respond to movement not confidence, In that case we'd all be out with our cheetahs, no matter how susceesfull you start a cheetah, it

I would hate to be a young lad getting into running dogs now and glad I did my time years ago, with no internet babble, stories of wonder dogs , percentages rates of catches , it's a fecking minefield of miss information , Too many running dog owners training through pet dog ideology, don't let it jump up , confront it over this and over that , eat first , walk through door before it , total useless bullshite , useless for a working relationship, Get out there and enjoy the dog and don't be giving a feck about the numbers game and whether the dog is making the grade or not , it's abo

100% good post , For me 10 months equates to just having gone through puberty , I don't believe in this 1 year for them is 7 to us bullshit , It's like equating the desire or mindset of a young teenager to a fully grown man , the maturity isn't there yet , the drive is only blossoming it's not concreted in yet , As the man says keep at it , encourage it , your positive feedback will progress it , best of luck
