  1. Some good advice there, what I would add is the more of that little predator mind makes it to adulthood the easier it is to train, In that I mean, that destructive prey instinctive mind which can cause such mayhem in a domestic setting is the one you want to work with later, the pup is only expressing in its limited capacity the roots of prey drive, which is an emotional state that galvanises the adult dog into action, So management is the key, in and around your space must be a safe and fear free zone in the pups mind if we expect it to be able to deliver a just caught prized possession
  2. I can see where this thread is going and what a lot of lads are doing with working bred pups is that they are taking dog knowledge from pet dog voices, If you need to work hand to jaw with your working dog you don't need to start training straight out of the crib a pup won't stop learning after 5 months old ?, Pet homes have no outlet on the whole for driven dogs , working homes have a perfect partnership where a dog can express himself and has a complete focus for his energy in accordance with its owner , Where a dog has no real focus , problems occur , pet homes are for ever dampeni
  3. As the man says take it , some things just fit right , old timers used to say to me , "let a pup lie up for the first ten months " never understood it til I witnessed lads bollix up good pups before 6 months old Too much too soon before a pup can make a real social bond with its owner can be the detriment of a good relationship, with a clean sheet you can write your own script Best of luck
  4. The current thinking in dog Dom today and I can see where your coming from stroller, is that a pup must be exposed to all this Stuff to get it used to live in our domesticated world , It's relatively new thinking and I can't remember it been around when I first worked a dog , mind you that's a long time ago now ?, and they were well adjusted animals The point being that the dogs had a focus for their energy, an example of this is the greyhound, kept in a kennel til way beyond the so call social interaction date , just taken to the track and home again and stimulation free but can be
  5. Words of wisdom , couldn't agree more , way too much stimulation for a puppy mind in the home which should be sleeping most of the day , TV radio , kids , Xbox , noise , A pup is born social , when we stimulate in the home we cause excitement ,and when a pup is excited it Needs to bite something anything , and we then start confronting for problems we caused in the first place by making the home a play area to a puppy mind , Get it out , little run little kennel and let the wee f****r relax without having to constantly confront him
  6. Hand feed while out , get the dog coming right into your space to eat , not talking bout treats here . Feed him while out with him on long line , Don't do any obedience work over the next while it can cause conflict in the dog mind , All positive , don't correct for making contact , such as jumping up , It takes time to build trust Manage manage manage , so the dog can't put himself into situations where he will f**k up , been one step ahead is the name of the game , gradually it will sink into the dogs head that you are his avenue to everything , training is a doddle after that
  7. Believe it or not , a lot of cases like these are in fact the dog picking up its vibes from the owner, Went through a situation like this with another woman who underneath it all actually wanted protection from the dog while out ,
  8. Couldn't agree more,Years ago lamped with a half bred terrier cross , no speed to talk about , worst feet I've ever seen and a short little terrier tail on it but game as f**k , caught most in or around the hedge , Wouldn't have swapped her for any fleet footed speed merchant A dog will find a way of catching to suit it's attributes if you throw enough work at it , Hmmm, I get what you're saying, but I disagree. In 90% of the places where we're from, unless you've got a 'fast' type, you're going home empty handed, day or night. Not wishing to argue, just saying as it is, and always has been

  11. During the rut , the males are energised to a huge degree as we know, Energy can't just disappear , it's got to be spent , normally the Bucks go through their reserves fighting and shagging , it's not uncommon for a buck to be unchallenged and only shag and in the same vein with no females about the bucks will spent themselves fighting , it's more physics than biology , energy can't just disappear , it's got to be grounded out
  12. E collar training always brings strong reactions out in people and some of those people don't think twice about grabbing and scruffing a dog but frown about the very mention of e collars The truth of it is when you grab a dog, you are totally responsible for the negetive feedback the dog allocates to it but with the collar you are not , It's the same as anything else, like a knife in the hands of a surgeon it can work wonders but in clumsy hands can cause destruction and mayhem , The single most important thing about the e collar is , the dog must f***ing love putting it on ,
  13. A lot of what's already posted relates to the owners ability with a dog For me a dog must have heart,
  14. Not sure I'm getting this , she has done nothing before ?? As far as hunting goes She had good recall / relationship up to this ?? This is completely out of the blue ?
  15. Check out , Higgins gun dogs , The Higgins Method, He has a real understanding of how the predator / prey dynamic plays out in dog and bird, He works with what the dog does naturally and thinks nothing of taking 12 week old pups in the field, The simple truth of it is the prey controls the predator, people don't understand that important point, a lot of lads hung up on the dominance thing where we become predator like to the dog and he feels prey like but in the long run the more a dog fulfills his predator role the more in tune with us he is Mark if you can get your head round
  16. I wouldn't be that focused on the whistle as such Mark , I would set up situations where the dog stopping itself gets to mouth the prey , control from the inside out not the outside in , He's giving the pup enough time to mature so the whistle becomes habit forming all the while you become his avenue to the hunt , which n turn will bond him to you , In time the stop signal is only the negetive before the positive and a dog can deal with that , while previous to that the negetive (stop whistle) was standing on its own and the dog couldnt see a positive after it , if ya get my drift
  17. That's interesting , So you'll spend the next year to year a half just reinforcing or annoying the dog to get it to stop
  18. Success for a dog is getting the prey item in its mouth , he needs to find sucess by been steady , If he tried high tailing after game without sucess , I would keep him on a long long line let him hunt away, when he shows signs of game steady him with line , making your way up to him on a tight line , stroke him and praise him softly You probably need a helper for this but the game needs to be put up and shot with the dog rooted in that spot , the game needs to be brought back and given to the dog The principle is in time the penny drops with the dog that doing less is more, the le
  19. The thing about stock training is that when a pup is stimulated by sheep chickens whatever it is , The pup is energised to such an extent that he has to act , it's the state he's in that informs his actions , You don't need to slap the pup out of the state of attraction for the stock , you need to use that attraction to align with you , Having a tennis ball or tug item is ideal , get a Heel or a jump up on command , any or some sort of interaction with you , The principle is that , the energised dog has an outlet through you and can listen and take instruction while in that state o
  20. The retrieve for me involves a couple of elements One is that the animal will actively engage in the out run and return with item , The next is that the pup will enter into your space with item , can be the biggest cause of anxiety for owners , this part of the retrieve depends on the owner/ pup relationship and why so many pups fall short , pup which have been disciplined for mouthing or jumping up or have a element of fear in the relationship or have had item snatched off them Don't try getting the Full retrieve from the outset , if the pup is coming into your space with the item gr
  21. Go out in the Mid day Sun , mad dogs and English men ?
  22. The more I learn about dogs the less I feel modern dog advice works, We bring a pup into a home according to modern advice to get him used to kids, noise, smells ,TV everything that goes on in the modern home seemly to socialise him , it's no fault of our own every f****r does it But as far as I can see all we are doing is Hyper stimulating the wee fuckers to boiling point , they are been grossly wired up with everything and then expected to behave in a social manner They start chewing up the place , we fall out with them because they chewing up the kids , whining , shitting , we tr
  23. Pup is full of prey instinct , usually when things arnt moving or arnt moving fast enough the sexual element will kick in , static object becomes a sexual attraction ,it's still all prey making to the pup either way it's all a physical attraction , You will get folks talk about dominance but how they explain small dogs humping toys in the home as dominance is beyond reason

    Fekin Dogs.

Many folks worry with talk about prey drive in the mutt , however we are not creating the prey drive and instinct , it's already there , we are merely channelling it into appropriate activity This way it won't find its own way out , which is always going to be inappropriate in our domesticated world , otherwise we are leaving it up to the dog to decide what he wants to do with his prey instinct .
