Jagd terriers and bigger game hunting
stevemac replied to Scheme_Lakeland's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Jadgforlife the way dogs are used in Europe in your driven hunts is very different from the way dogs are used to hunt feral pigs in Australia. Where a hound or jagd that give voice are just the ticket for driving game to guns, this is far from the method dogs are required to run silent use their nose and get quickly up on their game make a catch and hold the pig so the hunter can catch up and dispatch the game with a knife. Bull terriers both pure and cross bred have been used for fifty years that I know and the Bull terrier brings a lot to a pig hunting dog. Not only the tenacity to see the -
The ideal lurcher is the one that works best for you in your country.

Yes they are a hunting machine they have become quite popular out here amongst the fox hunters and even some pighunters I know are keen on them also. Pure they do have a soft mouth and not keen on teeth but the crosses usually harden up and maintain their unique hunting style.

My hunting buddy has a 1/4 Ibizan 3/4 bull grey the dog is a very good fox dog very athletic great nose can find em in the swamps we hunt. Great mix for a fox dog.

There has been many good collies and their derivatives all over the world but for the most part as far as the ACD goes collies were not suited to the the hot conditions here as well as the heavy coats that harboured parasites. It wasn't until the dingo was added that the British dogs blood were able to make their mark here. Many were tried and just as many failed. As far as the Kelpie goes the addition of dingo was a big secret for a long time as collie bitches were used when in season to attract dingos in to a trap ring some actually made it through and mated the bitches pups from these matin

Never been as wary of kelpies as I am cattle dogs though as you say there's always the odd one to keep your eye on. I have known a few kelpie males that like to be king of the the hill the trouble being they will bite off more then they can chew which often does end well for them. But great working dogs with bucket loads of energy no surprise when you consider the type of country they were developed for.

Being an Australian I think it is in bred in us to as wary of a cattle dogs as they are of strangers. Haha My best mate that bred them most his life had a dog when we were young that would guard his land rover at the beach while he surfed we all knew never go anywhere near his truck when he wasn't there. His later dogs were much more bidabel and great hunters

Has anyone ever put a hare to ground with the lurchers
stevemac replied to Ferretman65's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yes European hare and jack rabbits. -
The hybrids and the galgoes were both very capable the one of the galgoes did not miss once in a race he was like an exist missile the hybrids had harder ground but ran jack rabbits to a stand still with left. The pure salukies were not the quality of the other two.

I think most runs down his chin.

Of cause no one has better than you or done better than you have you ever run black tail jacks on cactus filled desert where one farm is bigger and flatter than half of britian. Where the jacks are conditioned from birth by coyotes that can run faster and further than your average lurchers. But hey you know you have been baiting and arguing this whole topic so you must.
-
Well I've seen galgoes run black tail jacks over cactas filled desert in New mexico and the the frkers can catch. Ive also seen saluki hybreds and pure saluki do the same.

From what I've been told by a friend in America that managed to get a couple the Spanish would rather kill them then let them go and do in some pretty horrible ways.

Keep your pathfinder till can afford something better. There heaps of shit farmers here back over them with their tractors to right them off so they can by a hilux or ranger. Haha

Please yourself i always have a chuckle to my self when I see off roading depected on british tv. Absolutely no problem with them on wet roads here but as you say the nut behind the wheel is always the final determining factor. Just looked up the vechicle ya I wouldn't put them on one of those either, but I wouldnt ,own one of those for going bush.

Been a big fan of deerhound /greyhound and their staghound offspring for about 20yrs. Like all dogs and their crosses its more to do with the dogs you start with then the breed. As luck would have it I meet a friend with some of the best hunting deerhound in Aus at the time. Picking the right greyhound is just as important it doesn't have to be the fastest you can get your hands of but it needs to have the right stuff at the finish. No point having a dog that can gallop along side a hare saying gday and never making a catch. The mother of my first deerhound greyhound was such a greyhound raise

Toe looks sprung, nails are not long but are sharp and need to be trimmed. Time to see a greyhound man and have toe treated it may need a rubber band made from a bicycle tube in the future.
