  1. Hi Koru When I was a lad a mate of mine had one she was a cracker on rabbit and fox good nose and could hunt them out of scrub. She was very smart, quick and could turn on a sixpence. hope this helps. I might add her father if I remember rightly was a rangy choclate and tan working kelpy( the old folks use to recon he sired every pup for 20 miles around LOL) and her mun was a big black cousing greyhound. My mates grand dad use to do this cross a lot when he had the rabbit packs. Stevemac
  2. Hi Ian Good boar you have their, as big and strong as he is you might be surprised how fast he would pull up and sit down with a good staghound or terrier swinging of his nuts. The South Africans use their sight hounds on Warthog and Very large bush pig they teach them to keep away from the pointing end though. Stevemac

HI brother fox hope you are doing well, Last weekend myself and brother Salt hunted with brother Callan out Breewarenia way only got a few small ones and were set up for a good nights hunting when the heavens opened up and put an end to that on the black soil country. the best we could do was get of the property without getting bogged. 8. Nice GWP Kiwi How do you find them around your other dogs I have heard the males can be a bit dog agressive. LL Thanks mate I dont want to tempt fate but we have been lucky over the years with only minor injurys that any dog can get in the bush. Heading out west in a fortnight where the staghounds come into their own see how we go. Stevemac

  12. G'Day LL Yes and no when it comes to prey drive It really depends on the individual Adding a splash of Greyhound or bully grey would give a more consistant dog without lossing the ridgeback qualites. As far speed goes we hunt much faster game than fox and this game does sretch a ridgeback the ridgeback has to use its brains to put its self in a position to catch. depending on the country the ridgeback can out run fox. Ridgebacks in Australia have a lot of americian blood these days which has given us a legger lighter framed dog From what I have read and seen of English Ridgebacks the heavye
  13. Gday Fellas Ive had ridgebacks for 26 years and yes I have heard all the opinions on the abilities or lack of from pig hunters. I have had ones that would find and lug I have ones that would find and bail and Ive had ones that would find and point. After 26yrs and 21 dogs you could say the only commonality between them all is they ( apart from one that could not find his tail if it wasnt stuck on ) could find game In some of the areas that I have hunted this is no mean feet. As far as foxes go it is a very sad ridgeback that can not run down a fox and deal with it. A very close friend of
  14. Gday All been watching this topic for a while. And it really is a case of horses for causes where we hunt it is open country or open forest and while bully cattle or bully lab would have been handy dogs at one time. The pigs are not dumb and have become very weary to noise such as the ute, dog cage rattle or dog wimper and are off at a great of knots. So we use staghounds and a ridgeback as a finder I find they to work well for me are silent hunters and can cover the ground and get to the pigs before they get to far away. Not bagging any one elses dogs this is just what works for me. I have
