Update on the rubbish Airedale crosses LOL
stevemac replied to skycat's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thankyou skycat for your honest evaluation of your dog. I think you have just primed my passion for the breed once again. My hunting buddy is just starting an airedale blooded lurcher, for a pup he is a very smart dog and very active on the hunt not the fastest 12mnth old pup ive seen but is picking up the bunnies with the skill of a seasoned vet. So if he is any indication your in for a good time. Steve -

Great looker Ive had my eye on these dogs for years. Would you rate her scenting ability on a fox as good as a hound? meaning is the drive there to take her to the end of the trail. you said she was in her summer hair cut. does she have much of a coat in winter? -
Ya so are the bull blooded stags in my back yard. Samwe to you and yours for the season.

Stabs the guy mentioned he had a chance of a airdale blooded stag and I was just stating that airdale blooded dogs are as smart as any I have had the privledge to hunt with wasnt picking on anyones type I like most if not all types o hunting dogs. It is true though that longdogs have made there name in Australia IE staghound /kangaroodog and collie xs have been tried but were not as successful, But that might have as much to do with the game being hunted as the type of country they were being hunted in. (horses for courses)

I totally agree Brother Fox (dont fall of your chair. lol) Mothballs if you are after a dog with brains and have the chance to pick up a pup with airdale blood you wont do better and will also have all the balls required as well. Im all for trying somthing a bit different but but if learcher were the best dogs for over here than the old timers would not have developed long dogs to the degree they have.

Hi Sky cat did you have a redline airdale? If so how was it to live with and how did it go in the feild. Steve -
Great shots they dont like the snow much do they. Steve

They would be spanish galgoes they do have amazing stamina but are a breed developed by the spanish and they would rather hang them out of a tree then let you have one. I saw a few coursing in new mexico and they were exerlent hare dogs. A mate of mine has rasied a few greyhounds from pups with the stags and they turn out quite ok my Deer/greyhound is out of one such greyhound bitch. Steve

Its not a problem over here as hounds are used to hunt deer. Though Ben Hardaway had a novel way to do it in his book you get a gentle slop a barrel and some deer scent in a spray bottle. You put the hound in the barrel and spray it with the deer scent while rolling the barrel down the slop. He recons it is granteed to cure 75% of hounds from chasing deer and 100% from ever getting back in a barrel again.

I the staghound is a mix of deerhound, greyhound and little wolfhound or borzoi in there make up but the best have been breed and kept true for decades in the states they are the coyotee dog and in austrslia they are the kangaroo dog. They would handle anything you have over there though a little large for daily rabbit catching.

Have hunted a few aussie hogs and while the EBT is the backbone of many pigdogs and have been for 40yrs they have limitions used as a pur bred , but bring a lot to the table in a cross.

Coursing Greyhound versus Racing Greyhound
stevemac replied to Stabs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Interesting comment as Austraian track dogs are full of Irsh blood. The bitch in my avatar is first x track dog bred. though her mother was not raced. both my bitch and and her mother have taken all game avable over here. So as you see from the dogs Ive had contact with not much wrong with track dogs. -
Interesting comments there mate there as many xs as there are pig hunters over here. Brother fox touched on it but nsw north and the pig hunting becomes the most popular sport southerm NSW south and the foxhunting takes over, and then you can be lucky like me and live in the middle and have the best of both worlds. As far as Running dogs go not a lot up north although there are a few hardy soles like Stabs the further south you go the more popular they become. Dont let any one tell you a bull xgreyhounhd or staghound wont catch a pig they do just fine. as far as fast game goes it is advantages

Beautiful breed for large game in wide open spaces the working deerhounds that are owned by my friend take a while to wind up but will run on until they have their game not my choce for rabbit. recon they would handle those deer you have over there Dan, not that anyone would do that.
-
Go for something a little bit bigger ie; bull x deerhound /greyhound , wolfhound bully or one of scotsmans Alaunts. Im not in the UK either and run bully blooded staghounds.
-
Borzoi staghound x is common in some circles over here good killers, fast but a bit aloof. Recon you'd end up with a 25 to 26 " dog whippet fast with better kill strenght. If it keeps the misses happy its probly worth giving it a go. good luck

thats what ive heard, that they can be very sharp with people+dogs.? you better believe it.

Yes there are still plenty around the big places some love them and others prefer to use kelpies and boarder collars or xs between any of the three. one fellas place I hunt with a cousin is about 20thousand acres the cocky only runs cattle dogs the nahbours a property of about the same size the guy only has kelpies bred for cattle work. So its just like any thing else really. Steve Uploaded with ImageShack.us

used to love working with cattle dogs or cattle kelpie xs the cattle would respect the dogs in those days, Now days its all hobbie farmers that dont own a dog and hand feed their cattle. A little while back I was invited on to a place to sort some foxes while working a paddock with my dogs a mob of yearlings ganged up and did their best to push me and my dogs out of their paddock just no respect LOL so I grabbed the stockwhip from my ute and changed their minds. Never needed to do this back when cattle dogs were the the working dog of choice and every place had one or three.

Personaly I would of listed gameness, inteligence, and a good nose above anything else. Sure these attributes are as much a part of a good worker as anything else and the parents should show these attributes before they are bred from. these things are hard to pick in the welping box. However a dog that has these attributes but is to big to go to ground isnt much good to a digging man. I must say though that a dog small enough to do the job but no guts isnt much good either. the full package is what is required.
