  1. The bitch in my avatar is first x deerhound/greyhound never had any reason to doubt her speed take of or the long hall has taken plenty small and large Id have another in a flash.
  2. Dogs dont give a toss if the are hunted or just have a good home. I get mine out when i can rest of the time they are happy at home. Think you might need to evaluate if owning dogs at all is the thing for you may be you should take up shooting or traping.
  3. Old saying winners are grinners and losers can please themselves. Ive exhibited my dogs and won and lost, Ive judged and wished i had more ribbons to give out. But after all its just an excuss to catch up with like minded people for a few beers and tell some tales about the season past. Ive meet a lot of good people at our annual show and have invites to visit and hunt all over the place.
  4. Ive seen Galgoes run blacktail jackrabbit and on the same trip I got to see pur saluki run on the same New Mexico desert while there on a visit with another hunter I witnessed saluki/coyotee hound dogs run black tail jack he also ran a couple of his straight coyotee hounds . Its hard to compare the jack to the brown hare the jack is a lighter built aminal than the brown hare but I would say from what I saw the speed and endurance is about the same. of the 13 dogs I saw run on that trip I would have gladly taken home the 2 saluki/coyoteehounds and the 2 male galgoes unfortunately i didnt get to
  5. We have a little terrier that bolts more than we have to dig to. thank hevens I still find it hard to equate a shovel to having fun. No hound pack around here so its the shot gun or my deerhound /greyhound she just stands back and waits for the bolt not seen any get away when hunting with the terrier in this manner.
  6. The deerhound of old was around 28 to 30inches .start of the 20centry the dog show bragade got hold of the breed and bred the size up dogs around 31/32"tts are still functional here in Australia but any thing over that they become slow ,combersome, and useless theres been a few around 36" of late couldnt run out of sight on a dark night. A mate of mine has a yearling bitch she is 28tts and you'd think she was a staghound the way she runs.
  7. I know of staghounds that have taken samba stags they are a bigger deer than reds nun of this single handed bull shit took 3 31" very fit staghounds.
  8. As I tried to point out in my previous post the word has different meanings on either side of the atlantic just because it has one meaning in your neck of the woods does not mean it has to have the same for some one else. American curs a whole group of dogs seperate to the many hound breeds the have as time passes the working cur dogs are being broken up into breed groups. A work in progress as it were.
  9. Yes in English hound circles a cur dog is any dog other than a hound no matter how many ribbons it might have won. In American hunting terminology a cur is a general mixed breed working/hunting dog many of which are being bred true to type. Curs have there history with the early settlers and their european and native dogs. By Deffination the ridgeback is a cur dog from another continent.
  10. The wife had her dog to the vet for needles yesterday while there she did the weighing thing. Now shes a 3 yr old pur saluki in good nick. she weighed 21kgs now my dogs are all lager types than her ,still this seems a little light to me. my question to the pur saluki owners on here would be what is the average weight of a working pur saluki bitch?
  11. Ive followed the topic with a bit of interest As unlike some in the dog world I know that the ground did not open up one day and all the purbreds just jumped out. every breed hound or other has had its time of development as we know foxhounds have both bulldog and greyhound along with the st huberts blood flowing through those veins, this may all have happened a very long time ago but it happened. its not the mixes that make the breed but the selective breeding and puppy selection based on the work required that the breed comes from. But then this topic could be just about some form of p
  12. Brain washing is a wounderful thing tell someone oftern enough especially as a child and they will grow up beleiving it. I have no beef with any ones religon or beleifs but I do with anyone trying to push their beleifs at me, we get them here the happy clappers and the new age church goers knocking on the door and putting adds on the telly. Like their the the first ones to come up with this idea and all should come along and join in and dont forget to pay your tide. I would ask any one of religious inclination just what have nearly all the wars through out history been about. not much love
  13. the internet and the muppets posting what they shouldnt will be the end of all hunting here in Aus bfore the internet we flew blow the radar nobody carring what anyone got up to now we have the bunny hugers watching our every move.
  14. Whin roo hunting of any sort has been illeagle since the 70s. All game hunted over here are feral pest and we slip into a grey area they will never come out and say its ok but it saves the goverments millions in feral animal pest control every year so they tend to turn a blind eye.
  15. So I take it from your post that you beleive that to top hunters wont through a dud. Youve not breed or hunted many dogs then! Yes it would be nice to have a pool of coursing greyhounds to pick dogs from but in Australia competive coursing was baned in the 70's Victoria was the last state to bring in the ban after dogs were shot, sent to hunters, some went to the dog track to try their hand. but the coursing greyhound was dispersed and disappeared as a group. The track greyhound is a poor cousin to the coursing dog its true but lets look at the job of the greyhound in the production of a
  16. a pur breed is a line or strain of dog bred in a closed gene pool and has bred to type for 7 generations in australia at least in the states they except dogs with a 3 generation proven pedigree.
  17. Form should always follow function. Not only should form follow function but function gives us form . a saluki looks like it does because it is a dog that can run at speed over great distance .not the other way around. sorry cant help myself shovin that point done peoples throats.
  18. they are well behaved looks like the whips have been doing their job.
  19. stick em in the cover and stand back wih the shot gun and smach what runs out they will get the idea eventually. just take enough matyes to catch em before they get away. god luck
  20. Looked lik some fun, thanks for sharing.
  21. Hello mate, ever had any really good dogs which have came from average to below average dogs?by accidental mates or whatever or from dogs which ye wouldn't of dreamed of producing real good grafters? I guess the first dog we got when we were married would qualify as a dog from ordinary parents that turned out a beauty he was a golden retreiver out of back yard pets not sure if it was that he was with us 24/7 or that he just had that something spiecal but he was a fanstic bushing dog ,duck retriever and blood trailer and watch dog. As well as fantastic with the kids never got the chance
  22. Ive got to say most of my hunters have been free wether staghound, foxhound or rhodesian ridgeback I paid 100 dollars for a smooth fox terrier once and she turned out a cracker Ive paid for dogs also and they have been useless like stuntman Its the expence of getting them home that hurts the pocket a bit but if you didnt want them you wouldnt fork out the dough. Recon its not wether there free or not its weather they ar from good stock or not If they come free its just a bonus.
  23. This has been a greatread and skycat I think you will have a lot of fun with her. Dan I have seen what your saying with my own and a good friends dogs, Andrews dogs are for hunting foxes so the size and intensness isnt the same as a coyotee dog, however he has a stag bitch that is as good as any I have seen but she has an aloofness we joke and call her a snob because she keeps to her selfbut when hunting she is very intence always the first to sight the fox and always on the head. i have a first x deerhound greyhound grease lightning always makes the catch but a rear end graber wouldnt cal
  24. A good mate of mine had his wolfhoundxstag broad sided by a big billy while hog hunting goat came out of the scrub and put the dog over a cliff. Dog shattered his pelveris when he landed amoungst rocks. Another friend and I used to shoot them we both had smooth foxterries at the time we would shoot the billies and use the dogs to catch the weined kids. We would take them home till it was time for a BBQ. Young goat Kid is just right.
