  1. I have no clue when it comes to hunting with dogs so would what you are saying about the EBT be the same for a Staffordshire BT. Before anyone starts moaning i am unexperienced in this feild of hunting. staffs like EBT out here both have there limitations as the main quarry in Aus are pigs. at the moment I have a lurcher with staff blood all be it well back. There was a chap back in the ,s that hunted them pure and did quite well with them unfortunately while he was cutting fire wood one afternoon they took of on a decent boar that killed them he gave up on the little stafs after that.
  2. Read the story reeds like a load of made up shit. If they were worrying sheep then hes with in he,s rights. but sounds like he was scared of hounds and shot them when they were lost and turned up on his door step.
  3. often tried on this site but always tells me my pics are to big.
  4. Last time out Spindolero two guys working pack six guns and 4 including myself working runners. and 30 for the day we did about 5-6 klms of river.
  5. As with any cross the breeds give you the type you still have to select the right dogs to cross. The deerhound x greyhound I owned was breed fro two dogs that were doing the business every week from rabbits to feral pigs and every thing in between. That litter produced same quality dogs. I breed my bitch to a bully stag just because I was hunting a lot of pigs at the time and wanted some holding strength I've been hunting the two I kept from that litter for the last 7 years.
  6. Doberman do have greyhound in make up and have double suspension gallop.Like any breed there's good and bad have know dobs with good temperament and also ones that would take your head off. Using dogs to hunt roos is illegal in Australia but I can see such a cross making a very handy roodog.
  7. Would think this yuppie farmer might get a rough time down the pub when his gun isn't handy. Practically though unless you have guns lining his boundary its near impossible to stop fox running across land or the hounds from following.
  8. Good day out Baz69. we fox drive over here guns and staghounds at the ready while beagles and terriers push the creeks and cover. most crews pick up 30 or so in a morning. I let my dogs hunt them out and run them down when Im on my own But on big sheep stations at lambing they have to be hit hard.
  9. pull the screw or nail out and plug the tire.
  10. My son has spent the last two years developing the 2016 model. for ford Australia like every car /ute /suv. they are built the best they can be for the price. Australia is the home of the mid size ute every write up Ive read about the new model ford ranger 3.2 Auto is the pic of the heard. Remember we use our 4x4s for what they are meant for not just a bit of wet grass and sloppy for gate ways.
  11. I might have the cat by the tail but I thought you only used the Aussie pigdog as an example of re constituted working dogs from pig dogs from show not that you want to use wheatens as pigdogs. However show dogs of 40 and 50 yrs ago were not as far from there working roots as they are today. Ive never been one to back away from a dog breeding challenge, wish you all best in your best with your efforts living in Canada I would have thought there would be many dogs avalible to you over there Mountian curs being dogs breed over centurys for the game on that continent.
  12. ya good luck , look there is always a chance of jaging a worker from show lines but honestly if you like a particular type of dog its easier to go for that and ad some blood from a complete nutter to wake up the working ability. then breed back to your chosen type.
  13. wouldnt trust anyone else with my dogs. Besides want them working for me not anyone else.
  14. Scallywag comparing oranges with apples there. boarder collie head dog, cattle dog heeler. Of cause its not as simple as that there is good and bad in all breeds though If I were working scrub cattle in rough terrain cattle dogs are the go. especially those rough old bullocks that do not want to leave their home turf. There are some very good boarder collies these day bred for cattle work out here a young chap I know mustering contractor has some beauties. Though these days most stock is kept in more congenial places. The biggest difference on the hunting side of things as Ive witness many p
  15. My grandad raised ducks he would scald then as is mentioned above then wrap in a hessian bag to hold the steam in for a few minutes. This loosened the feathers and they came away with out any problem.
  16. I happen to live in the hunter valley where the ACD was developed. The area around Muswellbrook, Aberdeen and Scone were they developed is a very hilly country with steep deep gullies thick with scrub. cattle were not seen for years at time and a tough dog with a lot of drive that could push a cranky old beast out of his home gully was needed many English breeds were tried but a tough little collie type x with the dingo formed the grounding of the breed. then of cause help push them all the way to market. the breed split with the Timins biter being ( smithfeild dingo x ) taken to qld to later
  17. Dawn the smooth and wire foxterriers were once working terriers but a century of breeding for the show ring has taken a handy working terrier and bred it far from there roots. Now unlike most Ive exhibited dogs for many years at kc shows fox terriers were one of my breeds and while a couple of my bitches were handy dogs the rest were not they were all to big to be earth dogs and a lot didn't even try and I tested the lot of them. and they are only one of the breeds ruined by not being bred for purpose.
  18. My whippet is always trying to go to ground on fox hes to big but wish my terrier had as much go.
  19. Jack Russell terriers have been registered in Australia since the 80s now days there are four distinct types two registered types the jack russell and the parson russell both two big in the chest to be able two successfully work a fox in Australia. then there are the two types own and regestered by guys that work there dogs the short leg longer type and the leggier type both with chests small enough to be able to work our foxes in the scratched rabbit warrens hollow logs and trees and rock heaps they like to live in. the show types were working types until owned by people that have no idea ab
  20. You would definitely have some long range big game dogs. salukis can be a bit soft with game that bites back and deerhounds take a hell of a long time to mature, but raised right can be as tough as any sight hound. saluki x greyhound X Deerhound would be worth a go for Aussie conditions.
  21. I've owned 2 dogs who's Dam was a pure Greyhound the first was a straight cross deerhound/ greyhound a good honest bitch would take on all game more of a point and shoot dog as fast as hell and made up for her lack of hunt by the great catches she made. The second is still young but showing Great promise his sire is from line of foxdogs staghound x whippet with a little staffy blood well back her was put to a greyhound bitch. this pup is showing plenty of hunt and speed hes taken a few bites and takes them in his stride. So I guess I have nothing against breeding out of the right greyhound and
  22. Love crossing dogs and have found its as much to do with the individual dogs used in the x as their breed. I also usually prefer second or third x back to the sight hound as being better dogs we do not have working bedlingtons in Australia. do people x the first x back to the sight hound to maintain the speed or are the first x more favored.
  23. two dogs in my yard have ears like that neither have collie or saluki in there make up. Only whippet, greyhound and deerhound
  24. Its all very interesting maybe old mate will come up with hounds that can handle a wolf how ever he will need a pack of about 20 of them wolfs like our feral dogs can turn up in numbers and it doesn't matter how good your dogs are if there out numbered then it will end up in tears.
