when it comes to lurchers and lamping then yes i do know more than most ,even if i do blow my own trumpet ,if i did not think i was good at what i do ,i can assure you ,most of the welsh on here would soon let you know ,because i am known for what i do ,because i go out of my way to show others the best way ,in my opinion, to do things right with a dog and lamp .ie ,take them out . Unfit; in previous posts you have said you only keep one dog at a time, and keep them for life !! So suppose you have had dogs for 40 years, (which I doubt), and the average age of the dogs you keep "for life",

for the first time in 6 years my dog is layed up for a few days ,he got fighting in the back of the car with another dog and ended up with a 3inch hole in his neck ,he still filled the pot on that night and the next 2 nights ,but he did not want to come out last night because he looks sore so he will rest untill he want to come out again .

whin like you i have done my share ,but my biggest love is lamping , it is childs play to teach a dog to lamp ,to a certain standard ,but then ,most peoples dogs dont work like i get mine to ,and it all comes down to starting them early in life ,but as you can see ,others on this site only want a certain standard in their dogs so they say it is wrong what i and others do ,and it cant be achived to get a dog of 3 months to catch rabbits on the lamp .well they are wrong ,and it can be achived with most breeds of dog IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ,and i find the alsation x is a good type to do

its all down to how you start them ,you start to lift them over fences and they will get to expect it every time ,i personaly never will lift a dog ,even from day 1 ,i will show it a way through at the begining ,then after a while i just leave them and sit out of site untill they get over or under ,,all my dogs end up being over in front and waiting by the time they are 5or 6 months old .i think the biggest problem is people dont like to see there dog get caught on wire so they just keep lifting them to save any cuts and rips

i have looked at your profile and flicked through the post you have made ,you sound the real expert when it comes to lamping and working dogs , i would stick to the shooting if i was you ,because any one can point a gun and pull a trigger ,but to get the best from a dog ,well only a few have the know how . : :and i do agree with you about newcomers ,that is why i allways say you have to know what your doing ,or go out with some one that does .

Cheers for the help, What difference does it make the mother being the beddy and is it better to get a first cross or beddy whippet x beddy whippet. all i can tell you is that it defo makes a difference ,and a first x seems to be better ,then it just might be down to how good the owner is at getting the best out of each dog .if i was you i would get out as much as you can with some one that knows what they are doing ,learn all you can ,that way you can do the dog justice .

only to people like your self that has never tried or seen it . ,a lot has seen that it does happen and how good the results are ,that is all i can say ,and a lot of the witnesses are on this site ,and take it from me ,they are doing it them selves with there pups .like i keep saying the pups are taken out with older dogs and just left to do what they want ,.its as simple as that . The thread has gone from 3 month old dogs coursing rabbits-to taking them out to watch older dogs! Nothing new or mystical there! had to say something different mate ,it was getting stupid replies from non

if your going for a dog of this breading ,try and get the mother to be the beddy ,and make sure both parents are true workers ,it will make all the difference . dont worry about how big the game is you are intending to have a go at ,,they just have a little problem retreaving if it is 2 or 6 times their weight ,but they will have a go if you work them right .

like i said seeing is beleaving and a lot have seen and commented to me how different my dog is to theirs ,it works the lamp 10 times better ,it has far more stamina ,it uses its brain ,and it is on the game before the game realises ,it is over every fence before me and waiting ,and i have never had to carry it back to the car because of any serious injury ,if you know what your doing ,and i dont think there is many that do ,it will make for a better dog if it has it in it .this is how all my dogs have turned out after starting early in life . .and the best thing is all the people that has la

i think you should not start it untill it is 8 years old ,then there will be more game about for me .

It might catch easy rabbits but anyone who lamps enough rabbits knows how difficult they can be at the other end of the scale, when running rabbits like these you will miss more than you catch with terrier or one these X's. I lamp with Salukis I know that you could get away with sacrificing their speed to this level and still have efficient lamping dog. some of the best rabbit dogs i have seen and owned ,worked the lamp loose and were very steady ,they hardly ever had to run flat out .that is why they got good numbers .most of the rabbits are caught against the hedge .if you know how t
-
some people must only get out very little if they cant catch 100 rabbits in a season ,the only time it would be difficult is if the rabbits was not there in the first place ,so i would say this x would catch rabbits very easy ,if it was in the right hands ,nothing to do with the type of dog .like i said ,i could catch 300 rabbits on the lamp in a few years or less with a terrier ,if the rabbits where there to be caught ,,i have done it before .
-
if it ends up caching 300 rabbits in its life time it will have payed for its self 2times over ,so the price is nothing to go on . IF being the biggest word in that statement you could catch 300 or more easy with a terrier on the lamp in 3or4 years

when lamping was in its hay day ie before the ban most people running alsation x would not dream of bragging what they were hunting with them ,for fear of not being able to continue doing what they enjoyed so you would not have heard about how good they are in the right hands ,,now most have given up because of the ban ,so dont look on sites like this ,after all you only hunt rabbits now .and that is like taking candy from a baby .
