  1. As above, we used the small plastic 'bits' on the younger poults and if it was older poults(4-6 weeks old) we used aluminium 'bits'.
  2. I have been making my own for quite a while now and from loading the needle to tying on the bottom ring- a 3'6" net at 16 across takes about one hour. I know a few lads that do their own and that seems about average
  3. Just fished the Tyne at Low Walker today(first time this season), fished low water + 2 hours up (consider myself a novice at sea fishing) really enjoyed the session though. . Caught half a dozen small codling and two flatties the biggest of which is spot on 1lb 10oz(nice fish) that i will soon be having for tea Anyone else been out? ATB Mick
  4. Don't tell me, it was a Rampant Rabbit wasn't it
  5. Just wondering if anyone on the THL forum live in this area as I am after some info in relation to this specific area of Wales. Many thanks ATB Mick
  6. As above, get someone with proven ferrets to go out with you and see what happens. Is anyone else ferreting the same land(look for peg holes), you may be following someone around the same warrens
  7. I fished the River Derwent just up from Rowlands Gill for years and had some cracking Grayling but the farmers who allowed me to fish free have both died and new owners want no-one on There are Grayling throughout the Derwent river, Rowlands Gill and below is run by Axwell Angling Club I think and you can definitely get day tickets for it.From the ink works and upover is run by Derwent Angling Club, don't know about day tickets but I joined a couple of seasons ago and I think it was only about £40 per annum. The stretch I used to fish was spot on and there is no reason why the rest of the ri
  8. theres been some good bags up here in the north east for the last month or so with the average fish being around the 2-3lb mark according to the club lads some of the bigger fish are starting to show now, seen a lad pull in what looked close to a double last week hope its my turn next Hi tynetyke, has there been much sport up the river yet, I normally fish north side just up from old A&P shipyard. I know a couple of lads fished it last week but caught small cod and whiting, nothing of notable size though. ATB Mick
  9. No preference, on colour really, as long as they graft. Yes albinos are easier to spot in undergrowth and fields(exept in snow lol) and i have mostly worked jills over the years.
  10. Chinning I find is best and quickest as you can do it while the rabbit is still in the net. Same way as cjw above only i hold rabbit in my left hand. Lift the net and rabbit from hole, chin rabbit ,drop net and rabbit to ground, then put new net on hole (all done in a matter of a few seconds) handy when ferreting alone. I used to chop them on the back of the neck when I first started but, as mentioned, there is the possibility of bruising the meat. ATB Mick
  11. Hi there, a lot of the information will sound conflicting because everyone will have their own techniques and methods in ferret working and husbandry. There are many members on this forum, from the complete novice to some who have worked ferrets for decades, all of whom will have varying degrees of knowledge on the subject, so there is no need to worry about asking the most basic of questions (we ALL started out as novices). I think that the best advice I could give you is go with someone who has been ferreting for a few seasons and learn from them, there is no substitute for this kind of init
  12. The law definately covers ALL livestock not just sheep, 100% on that mate..... this even includes pheasants in the release pens. But your points are very true. Regards DnN Spot on there DnN, definitely covers pheasants, i have first hand experience of this (some years ago now but law hasn't changed). Not nice to see  but definitely legal to shoot a dog killing pheasants in a pen.
  13. When you are happy she is eating and strong enough, try taking one of the other jills from the other cage and put it in with her and observe. As Kay said it may be that she is being bullied by only one of the others and may live ok with another. I prefer to have my ferrets all together if possible(if hob is snipped) but as said above she may be end up being a loner, just means you will have to make more of a fuss of that one. ATB Mick
  14. I don't use nylon anymore, i am a convert to spun-poly and i also like to use hemp too. Nylon, i personally, always double knotted but hemp i single knot. Spun-poly, depends how lazy i am at the time, both single and double. ATB Mick
  15. Interesting to hear different opinions on this but after today i think i will stick to ferreting on less windy days. Put ferret in a warren today, not a big one it only has a few holes and not over a large area, that we have ferreted for three seasons and always produces a bunny or two quickly. It was fairly blowing on the top of the moors, we entered a jill at around 11 o'clock, she appeared out of two holes in quick succession, this is normally what happens at this warren but then nothing. Gave her some time to get things moving but nothing bolted. Located at one foot down and dug to her at
  16. Hi all, Been a couple of weeks since last out ferreting so out tomorrow, will be first time since my old jill died (gonna be lost without her), taking two of last years kits and one from a litter earlier this year(biggest kit i have ever seen/had) . It's a bit windy here at the moment and forecast to be windier over the weekend and normally would give it a miss as i have found over the years i tend to have more hang ups and therefore dig more when windy. Rain, sleet or snow don't seem to have much affect one way or an other it's just when very windy. Just wondering if all ye ferreter
  17. Absolute disgrace! Don't expect a reply from their head office but i've e-mailed them anyway.
  18. Mine have access to food at all times (dry complete food and the occasional rabbit) and i don't change whether i am going to graft them or not. Worked for me all the time i've had ferrets. ATB and good luck for tomorrow Mick

    found this

Hi Brother, I would phone the local Clay Shooting Club and tell them what you have found. My guess is that they have probably paid to have them disposed of properly and that the person paid to do it has 'fly tipped' the lot there. (Or am i being too naive) Atb Mick
  21. Is Darren not the lad who runs Kirkbourne Gundogs?
  22. I used to take them out regular but sadly that pair are long gone , (but not forgotten) good workers too.
  23. Good luck mate with ya fishing and enjoy the cider . Looks a nice spot there, (i'm jealous)
